Tiahuancu and the Peruvian border by taxi We were pretty short for time by the time we got to La Paz, but we nevertheless wanted to make sure we checked out the Tiahuancu archaelogical site. We decided the best way to fit everything in was to stay in La Paz for only one night and to do Tiahuancu by taxi on our way back to Peru. Our Lonely Planet book on Peru makes out it is best to avoid entering Peru via the Desaguadero crossing point (the one you need to use to go via Tiahuanacu), so we were a little worried about it all. In the end though there was no problem at all, and in fact we actually enjoyed crossing back into Peru via a route different to that by which we came. Our taxi charged us US$70 for the ride, which included a few hours waiting time while we checked out the ruins. The trip was shorter than we expected and we had no problems finding a cheap taxi to take us to Puno from the Peruvian side of the border crossing. All in all, it was very do-able and we made the trip in good time.
