Sorrounding areas La Paz, is a unique city sorrounded by snow capped mountains 365 days of the year. The airport is located in the high plains, one of the poorest neighborhoods (not dangerous but unattractive) in the La Paz. Once you start decending into the city the topography blows anyone away. Teh city is absolutely gorgeous from affar. The many cobble stoned streets downtown are filled with unique shops and little restaurants (many I would not venture to). The city is interesting and unique as well as the residential neighborhoods in the south of the city where people live comfortably next to the many great country clubs. What most tourists miss is travelling to the sorrounding areas of the city. La Paz is relatively safe and you will find most people are quite friendly. Take a taxi from your hotel and ask if they can give you a ate and drive to PALCA, COROICO, MUELA DE DIABLO or SORATA . The daily rate to go to these spots (approximately 2 hours away) should not be more than $50/trip.
