No bus, unless you must The buses aren't expensive (average trip 25-30 cents U.S.) and they go everywhere, but there's a huge drawback: they only accept coins, and in Argentina, no one likes to part with coins. I'd heard about the coin shortage but didn't really experience it until my family of five boarded a bus. Ninety centavos each? No problem. My husband handed the driver a five peso bill. The driver refused the money, pointing to the machine behind him. We pooled our coins and scraped together 4 and a half pesos, enough to get us to our destination...but we had to walk home because we simply couldn't figure out how to scrounge enough change for another trip. The subways, which accept just about all kinds of payment, were a much better choice, but their scope was limited. For a major metropolitan area, Buenos Aires should do a better job with public transit.
