Top Local Tips for Buenos Aires

Taxis Taxis are the way to go when in Buenos Aires. We took several long rides per day and I don't think we ever paid more than $5 per ride. The average ride was about $3. But be absolutely sure that you give the driver the amount you want to give. Don't accept change. When we changed converted US dollars to pesos it seemed difficult to get smaller peso bills. The 100 peso note is what is normally given, which is roughly equivalent to $30 US. (February 2008) I gave a driver a 100 peso note and of the change I got back we later found that the 50 peso note was counterfeit. At our hotel they later told us that it was unfortunately very common.

It cost us $460 at the Santiago, Chile airport just to start our vacation Upon arrival in Santiago US citizens must pay a 'reciprocity' fee of about $130 per person in lieu of a visa fee. This amount is supposed to correspond to what the US charges Chileans for entry fees. I guess this is fair enough as it is about the same amount we had to pay for our Brazilian visa (February 09), but there were no such fees to enter Argentiana. What was most upsetting was that we had a small piece of onion forgotten in our backpack from a sandwich we made days ago. Their customs people came across it in searching our luggage and fined us about $200 for importing illegal material. This seems to be quite a racket as someone else in line was also fined $200 for bringing in a small sealed 1/2 ounce container of honey that she had picked up from the breakfast buffet table at a hotel she had stayed at some time ago. Yes, we did fill out a form saying we had nothing to declare, and we thought we didn't. Their enforcement seems to be a bit draconian!!
