Top Local Tips for Queenstown

Customer Service & Food NZ is not known for customer service. Tours/events are generally fine, people are friendly and nice because they know you're spending money. However at restaurants and retail stores, the lack of customer service can be appalling. Especially in Queenstown, which is a very popular resort town. I was surprised until I spent time with an American transplant who's lived in the area for several years & has observed the recent, rapid changes to the town. Many backpackers pass through & run out of money, so thanks to the high demand they take a temporary service industry job until they have enough cash to quit and go back to playing. They aren't here to build a career and could care less about providing customer service. Plus since there is no tipping in NZ, there's no incentive for them to make an effort. Just be aware and don't let it ruin your trip. As for the food in Queenstown, it was consistently less than stellar no matter what type I tried, from upscale to casual - quite disappointing.

Helicopter - Snowmobile excursion If you can spare the $$$, make sure you do this.

Scenic Circle Aurum Hotel Elderly or disabled people should avoid this hotel as it is up a steep hill from the town centre. Central parking is not easy so you have to walk into town. It might be quite hard work coming back!
