I must say that I'm a sucker for punishment. I stayed at the Swan Barracks in 2005 for quite a bit. And let me just say that the place was atrocious! It has such potential but the management is truly pathetic. However, I've made lifelong friends with those who stayed there as well. The only saving grace about the barracks at that point in time were two students who were working there. I've read other reivews on this site and I've seen their names mentioned a couple times. Reuben and Wee were truly the awesomest! They were polite with the customers, and always gave us little tips to improve our stay there. Plus, Reuben would generally engage the other guests in a round of ping-pong while Wee was a terrific listener. Fast forward to 2009. I could not find a place to stay so I ended up at the barracks. Again. This time, the place was filthy! And to make things worse, the two students were no longer working there! The current receptionists lack people skills. Truly disappointing.

Management is clueless

I just came back from a week (05May-14May 2009) at the infamous Old Swan Barracks. I'm still scratching my head, trying to figure out where the management is coming from. The free breakfast of cereal, toast, and coffee does not come with milk. We had to go buy that. We were told people were stealing the milk when it was free. You also have to leave a ten dollar deposit to use the eating utensils, and you have to take them back to your room everyday after breakfast. Of course, they don't tell you any of this prior to check-in. The place has threatening signs on the walls within public view, predicting eviction and loss of deposits to people who take bread from the kitchen for purposes of making a sandwich later in the day... or for various other petty offenses. One morning there was a sign on our door telling us to vacate the room between 10am and 4pm because they were going to spray with insect killer. The sign said we were not allowed to use the room for any purpose...... Read more

Stayed for 3 days during my trip to Perth 2 years back (2006), the place wasn't great but every night during my drinking session I would see Ruben & Wii cleaning up the place. They were really friendly and helpful. But this time when I was back (2008), the place is just horrendous, too bad those guys weren't around anymore. Cleaning the place and it will be fine and get more friendly and english speaking staffs.

Stayed there a year ago (2006) and the condition was really bad, it was dirty and going back there a year later (2007) there weren't any difference, what made it worse was that the 2 nice & cool receptionist Wee & Ruben aren't working there anymore...Old Swan Barracks you guys really need to do something about the whole place.

Very disappointed with a hostel that was sold to be 'best budget accomoadtion in perth'. I was ignored by the receptionist when I first arrived, she looked up as I approached her (otherwise empty) desk then went back to reading her magazine till I eventually had to say 'excuse me can i check in?'! When I asked for a top sheet (which the other girls in my room had) I was told you only get one (bottom) sheet in summer and eventually was given one accompanied by a very irritated sigh. There is no air conditioning and the only fans in my dorm were high up above the top bunks so if you were in a lower bunk no cool air could reach you. Also no mosqito nets and windows in my room were permanently propped open so I got bitten every night. Free breakfast offered does not include milk for the cereal or tea/coffee, and on my last day there was no bread left at 8am (breakfast 6-10am) and no more coming in that day. Kitchen poorly equipped, not enough bowls or cups. The fridges did not...... Read more
