I was up there last Octobwer. It was a pretty good stay. Some differences were noted. There is no longer a 24-hour person on duty, abnd the intercom system has gone. The hotel is plain closed on Sundays, though open until 1 am on Sundays for the sake of late-night revellers. But you can have your next day (Sundays only) extended by several hours for left luggage purposes. Just check with staff. The breakfast room has been moved to a brighter but smller area. Also, the drawer marked cups and sauces??? I think that was meant to be cups and saucers. Sadly, the aquarium referred to in my previous post has gone. But the staff are still nice.

Let's see now. Nearly busted my leg when I stepped off a lift that that was well above the floor level off the floor I stepped on. I could not get a refund for the $20 deposit for my room key as I had to leave early (at about 8 am). There was nobody to give it to me. The place was deserted. Really disappointing, man. I did get a OK room. The windows even worked.

No penguins on site

A logo can be seen at the reception counter - only penguins like cold farewells. The absence of penguins at the Grand Hotel says a lot about the staff there and their warmness. The hotel is now part of the Merivale chain of hotels, of which the most famous member is doubtlessly the Slip Inn, where Mary Donaldson met her Danish Prince. Alas, princes (and princesses) seem to be as rare as penguins at the Grand. So what does the solitary traveler get at a night at the Grand? A single room will consist of a single bed, a fan from the ceiling, a window that faces a courtyard (not very aesthetic, but you will not be bothered by the noise of street traffic, and if you're lucky you will get to glimpse an an aquarium that belongs to a neighbouring office block) , a TV with a remote control, a fridge and the usual coffee/tea making facilities. Some grumbles - the windows of the single rooms seldom seem to close properly, and this despite a recent renovation of the hotel that has introduced such features as special electronic keys. Also, whilst street noise is a non-issue in the single rooms, the sound of glass bins being emptied into a council recycling truck is horrible. The inner courtyard, which has the glass recycling bins, serves as a kind of echo chamber that further enhances the din. One can expect this to happen once a day in the early afternoon, so cancel any plans for a sleep at that time - or bring along a heavy sedative, you'll need it. Double rooms do face the street - Hunter Street, to be precise. You may be disturbed by the sounds of noisy hoons coming from the Rocks area or going there. But the rooms themselves are clean and comfortable, based on my sole stay in one, at single room rates, it was given to me when a single room was not available. If you are going in there for a drink and a meal , not a bad choice , though finding a place to have your lunch is a bit of a challenge. Breakfasts are a new feature and are available 6 days out of seven (Sunday is normally the exception). Someone should normally be on duty on a 24/7 basis to handle any problems or queries. All in all, not a bad place, though penguins may disagree.
