Old type building with all what comes with it, but clean and VERY convenient place to stay. Manager is very friendly. Good place to stay for few days on budget holidays.

The Hotel by the Bridge

This private hotel, may look unassuming, but it is recommended for all budget travellers going to Sydney. It's location is excellent. It's a short walk from the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Milson's Point Station. It's close to the Rocks area, Luna Park, the North Sydney CBD, the North Shore railway line and the Ensemble Theatre. It's daily rates are very budget-minded - a minimum of $60. It's location on the North Shore, but very close to the city, means that it is not subject to the 'bed tax' that Sydney CBD hotels are subject to. The hotel itself is one of several in the North Shore area that used to be a private residence, but was converted in later years to a hotel. It has three floors, but it lacks an elevator - that's one of my few grumbles about it. The stairs can be quite steep and would be a definite problem to those in a wheelchair, with heavy luggage or with walking difficulties. It does tend to show its age, as evidenced by the creaky floors and the 'be quiet' signs present on all floors. But it does seem to have lasted well, and in the several occasions that I have been there Now I have never seen any cause for alarm. There is no restuarant on the premises - but there are lots nearby in Broughton Street, Kirribilli's main street. Similarly there is no laundry on the premises (though there is one nearby that operates 6 days a week at the time of writing) , but a clothes line can be found at the back. Communal kitchen facilities do exist. Most rooms use a communal bathroom/toilet (there are several on each floor). But for a little extra you can have a room with these facilities en suite and a view overlooking Careening Cove, a small but charming inlet in the Kirribilli area. In spite of misleading appearances, the hotel is staffed 24 hours a day. It can look very deserted on the weekends, and indeed you usually need to use a phone if you are checking in on Saturdays. But if a problem exists , such as a noisy guest or being locked out of your room at 2 am , you can call the hotel management for free on its upstairs phone and the matter will be attended to. So would-be noisy party throwers be warned - go elsewhere. Parking may be a problem. The hotel does not have a car park, and parking in Kirribilli's narrow streets can be limited. But there is a public car park area nearby near Willoughby Street in Kirribilli. So it'd probably better suit a non-car driver or a backpacker. Oh yes, let's not forget the free postcard that you always get upon that shows an bird-eye view of Kirribilli, with a certain hotel's presence on it highlighted. That's a long-term trademark of this hotel. If I was judging this hotel by three or four stars I'd give it a lower mark. But as an ideally-placed two-star hotel, I do highly recommend it.
