Stayed: 21 June 2006. 18th floor.
This was my second stay at the Carlton Crest, and I have to say it was even better than the first.
Firstly, the price. The employer - Tightfist P/L - provides an accommodation allowance of $135/night for Sydney; which for Sydney is not a lot. Trawling through Wotif, however, the Traveller finds that he can get a Deluxe King Room for exactly $135. Bargain.
Arriving in Sydney early, the Traveller has time enough to drop his luggage off before going to work, as it's only 7.30am. He imagines that reception might just store his bags until he returns in the evening (as many places will), so he's pleasantly surprised to find that he can check in immediately.
The very polite receptionist says that his room isn't ready yet, so he'll be "upgraded". This happened last time he stayed at the CC - but don't get too excited, gentle reader - the "upgraded" room is exactly the same as the type that he's paid for. Why does the CC do this? Did life originate in space? Will North Melbourne ever win another premiership? It's all a mystery.
But I digress. The Traveller was happy enough with checking in at 8.00am. He doesn't need to think he's being upgraded to be satisfied.
The room's great, very clean and on a high, quiet floor as requested.
The CC does room service meals which are good - if a bit pricey - but being located close to Chinatown and the City means that going out for something to eat is an option. The Traveller decides to walk into Town - but it's pouring rain outside and he imagines coming back like the proverbial drowned rat. Concierge to the rescue - the Traveller is loaned a very functional umbrella, for which he is truly grateful.
After dinner, the weary Traveller is faced with a familiar conundrum. What to do?
Lob down to the bar for a few sherberts? Flop on the king size and watch Big Brother? Listen to some Birdman on the CD player? Oops - no CD player here. Something more active, then? Well - there's no gym or fitness centre on site at the CC, but for the keen there's a gym on Broadway, a few blocks away.
Onsite, though, there's a well heated outdoor swimming pool & spa on the 8th level. The Traveller spends a very pleasant mid-winters eve, lapping up and down the steaming pool and enjoying the lights of Sydney while the rain arcs down through the longest night of the year.
Overall, the CC is excellent value for money.
