Very Good Hotel....Will Get Better!

from micahr2001
I live in Milwaukee and have visited just about every hotel in the downtown area. The Ambassador definately now ranks in the top 3. I took my wife there for Valentine's Day. While our stay wasn't without frustration (free in-room PC/DVD Player wasn't working & no 24-hour room service as promised), overall the time we spent at the Ambassador was great.
The hotel is absolutely beautiful. The marble floors, the slick lounge area (suggestion - try the key lime martini!), friendly staff and even the lobby bathrooms are unique. Our room was very spacious, clean, and comfortable. It was very quiet in our 7th floor room and the furnishings were great.
The problems that I had were dealt with respectfully by the staff. Because of the broken PC/DVD player in my room, I was credited $30 without even asking. Also, it was explained to me that room service will be available 24-hours a day beginning by the spring of '06.
Great Milwaukee hotel. It will get even better! It's a little west of downtown, but with their free shuttle service, it's the perfect location.

Disregard All Prior Unfavorable Responses

I'll admit that I am kind of a snob when it comes to where I stay. My regular joints were booked solid, so I crossed my fingers and booked the Ambassador.

I am from Milwaukee and often come back on Business, therefore I was aware of the history of the Ambassador. (how far it has come since then)

I'll be brief...Service was incredible, food was fantastic, rooms were unique and amazing. The hotel was clean, stylish and different. If you are tired of the 4 walls and the typical...stay at the Ambassador.

Impressive! I love it.

I remember this place from the early 90's. It was a shabby but decent place. Now there has been a renovation that leaves me speechless. Gorgeous bathrooms and sleeping rooms. Internet on the tv. I am astounded by the change this hotel's gone through and very pleased with my stay. I highly recommend this if you can't afford the Pfister.

A New Milwaukee Jewel

This hotel has just completed a major renovation. It is an amazing Art Deco palace. Starting with the lobby, continuing into the bar and resturant, and up to the rooms, everything is top of the line. We stayed in the medium price range room and had a king sized bed, DVD player, seperate bath and dressing area, Aveda products, robes, slippers, and a seating area that included two chairs and a couch. Oh, I almost forgot the desk are work area.

The previous reviews on here must have been written before the rehab. The staff is friendly and the drinks/food great. It seemed as if an internet coffee shop was almost complete.

It is located on the edge of the downtown near Marquette University. They have a shuttle that will take you anywhere downtown.

Great Value for the prices. If you are a fan of the Art Deco period, this place is a must, if only for a drink and dinner.

fabulous Art Deco comfort in new rooms!

from tigerb
We weren't too sure about the Ambassador based on stories from long ago, but we were given one of their newer rooms by a friendly desk clerk and were overwhelmed by the comfort of the room and the Art Deco touches. Towels were thick and plush, bathroom amenities were plentiful Aveda products, and the bed was a mountain of pillows. Our room also had a tiny fridge and nice bathrobes in the front closet. We wished we had an excuse to spend more time there!

Good Hotel - It will be Great

This hotel was a dump - until the recent renovations. They are almost finished and when it is done it will be one heck on an Art-Deco classic. The rooms are done -we had a room that comfortably slept six and it was large and beautiful for $99 per night, free internet and fine continental breakfast.

This is a great location for visiting Marquette University and 10 minutes to Miller Park and 5 minutes to downtown. Free shuttle to anywhere in Milwaukee.

Some renovation remains - the bar opens 9/1/05 and he restaurant after that. Also some light fixtures and painting needed. Still quite a good deal-especially if you know Milwaukee.

Ughhh. Left with bad taste in my mouth.

The hotel, having recently undergone renovations, was clean but still so so. A little out of the way from the downtown area and surrounded mostly by second-rate fast food chain restaurants. No attractions immediately around the hotel.

Be cautious of issues with the general manager, John, who was to re-imburse additional costs I (and 50 other guests) incurred when they had to turn away guests when they didn't get their building renovated in time. Had a good experience with Matt and Amy, other managers. Still to date (3 months later) they have not reimbursed any of the guests and the Milwaukee Visitors Bureau and Wisconsin Better Business Bureau have had to get involved.

They did give their guests vouchers for a future stay, but I'm too skeptical at this point that the offer will be honored.

An adventure!

Stayed overnite recently, single mom with 17 year old daughter--felt welcomed and safe the entire time--lobby is under construction right now, so finding the "right" front door to to enter was an adventure in itself, but our room on 8th floor was spectacular, clean, comfortable--this place is so cool, and will only get better as the renovation gets done--staff was very nice, as were the construction guys we shared the elevator with!

The biggest dump in USA ????

from A TripAdvisor Member
This dump should be closed down. The room I rented was cold, dirty, or should I say filthy, and the staff were rude and "inspected" your room when they felt like, just barged in to make sure 2 people were not occupying a single room. Public heath dept. should inspect here.

I had the misfortune of arriving in Milwaukee, and was supposed to stay at this "beatifully rennovated" (at least the way it was portrayed on the web) hotel. I guess the methadone clinic next door, the slew of drug addicted homeless wandering about, and the falling building facade should have clued me in straight away that this was hell. I think parts of The Shining were filmed here.

I actually went into this hotel (thinking I would be safer than at the curb) and the stench of death surrounded me. The ceiling was collapsing, the walls were stained and moldy. The furniture was heinous, unfit even for the Rue Morgue!

Seriously, the cab driver (an off duty fire fighter) didn't even wait for his fare. The last words he said were, "You're staying here?" as he dumped me on the curbside and fled for his life.

If you honor yourself you will never stay here.

Top Local Tips for Milwaukee

Resurants/Bars This hotel is NOT near downtown Milwaukee restaurants and bars. It is a few miles West from where the action is. A cab is the way to go.

Save some money Thursday night Ladies night at many establishments, the best day to go.

Milwaukee Art Museum Make sure to visit the art museum, an astounding collection that should not be missed if you are an art lover.
