Historical Traveller Reviews of The Historic Powhatan Resort Hotel

Williamsburg is nice - The Powhatan is not

from A TripAdvisor Member
We chose this place (I cannot get myself to call it a resort) becuase we liked the idea of a two bedroom unit with a kitchen. It seemed to have all of the amenities such as a hot tub and steam shower in the unit as well as an exercise facility on the property. Unfortunately, the hot tub was not functioning when we arrived, the steam showers were out of commission and the exercise room was closed for renovations.
Nice that anyone mentioned this when I made the reservation three days before! The condition of the unit was deplorable. My wife thought that the refrigerator had blood splattered across the front - luckily it was just covered with rust. If you don't mind staying in a dump, this is the place for you. BTW - I wrote a letter to the management company about the problems at Powhatan and they responded by saying that they hope I come back and have a better experience next time. Actually, I will have a better experience next time because I will drive by the Powahatan and laugh at the poor people who got tricked into staying at that dump.

Badly need renovation

My wife and I spent a week in a one bedroom unit at Powhatan in connection with a high school class reunion. We will not make another visit to this resort.

On the first night we found a flea on a bar stool, two spiders in the bed, spider webs in the corner of the bedroom and debris under the bed.
Every time one of us turned over in the bed or tried to "sneak" out of the bed so as to not disturb the other, the mattress foundation squeaked so loudly that the other woke up. The mattress was intolerable--we both got backaches.

The carpet was in deplorable condition--stained with food under the dining area table, toothpaste in the bathroom and what appeared to be bleach stains near the entrance to the hot tub. It did not appear to have been vacuumed since the last occupants left. The hot tub was moldy, as was the the shower curtain. The ceramic tile hearth was cracked in several places and numerous cracks surrounded the fireplace.
There were two broken floorboards on the ourdoor deck.

After two days we complained and only after my wife implied to the front desk that she was a "facilities inspector" did we secure a meeting with the assistant manager of the facility. The mattress/foundation was replaced and the carpet was "steam cleaned", however most of the stains remained.

When we asked to be moved to another unit we were told they were "full". However, judging from the number of cars in the parking lots [they do have assigned parking] we feel this was a lie. We spent at least two days of our week trying to get the facility into tolerable condition--time that should have been spent enjoying ourselves.

Our conclusion was that this resort overpromises and grossly underdelivers. They have potentially a wonderful facility if they would only maintain it properly and overhaul their housekeeping procedures.

More than we expected

We had booked our trip and then became a bit worried when we read the reviews. The staff was pleasant and attentive. Our unit (2BR/2B + hot tub) was very neat and clean. The kids loved the pool. Overall we had a great time and plan on returning in the future.

s nothing to write home about

I had a 2 bedroom/2 bath unit w/hot tub. It was a very nice unit, but was in need of quite a bit of cosmetic repair. It was also missing quite a few items from the unit (according to the inventory list provided by the resort). The staff forgot to provide us with pool towels. They quickly provided them upon request (approx. 2 1/2 hours).
The handle on one of the toilets broke during our stay. It took more than 24 hours for it to be repaired. Our hot tub did not seem to be all that clean so therefore, we did not use it. There was a ring all around it and we found some debris in it.I had some special requests due to my two chronically ill children. They seemed very accommodating at first, but when I wanted to confirm everything the day before arrival, a particular staff member became rude with me. The issue was resolved to my satisfaction once I spoke with her supervisor. We didn't appreciate the daily calls to our room requesting that we attend their complimentary breakfast or lunch so they can attempt to sell us one of their timeshare units. I came in on a rental exchange through RCI and I expect to be left alone during my staff. Some of the days, we refused to answer our phone because they kept calling.Overall, for the $ spent, it was a nice place to stay. I would NEVER pay the full amount for this unit because their upkeep leaves much to be desired. If I am going to pay over $1000/wk for a unit, I expect it will be in excellent condition. I don't expect to see lots of wallpaper peeling off the bathroom walls, mildew in the tub unit, and a dirty hot tub.

Better than I expected

We read poor reviews of Powhatan after having already booked. We were very skeptical, but it was too late to do anything. Well, we were pleasantly surprised. Check-in and check-out was okay. The rooms were nice and comfortable. The amenities were adequate. We didn't have any problems except for the hot tub which didn't heat up. All in all, our stay was very decent. We enjoyed it, and so did our children.

Rude Staff

from A TripAdvisor Member
i have reservations for the powhatan and after reading the comments/reviews, I decided to phone ahead to avoid dissappointment with my room. I found the staff nasty acting and rude. The clerk never once tried to make me feel good about my room--she just let me know that it was an older unit and the newer units were not available.....and she was quick to let me know that I could not cancel....I think this is the problem with this hotel--no cancellation, so that have you in between a rock and hard spot...the least she could have done was told me the room was nice...but, she just said, the units are 20 years old, and to expect wear and tear...geez...why didn't I read and take heed before it was too late....praying my experince in person is much better than the telephone...would suggest they take some 101 in customer relations--thank God my travel agent did as she sold this place as to die for.....

Relaxing Resort

I have stayed @ Powhatan Plantation twice before in its suite of rooms and plan to be there again this November. It is excellent - truly a 5 star in my opinion. Location, lovely. Close driving to Colonial Wmbg, etc. Resort quality w/impeccible service.

Family Reunion

from A TripAdvisor Member
We had 18 members of our family just spend a week at Powhatan Plantation. I read several reviews AFTER booking, and became worried the week before we left home. The place is beautiful and centrally located for the attractions of Williamsburg. We too had minor problems with the Hot Tub, and linens. The Hot Tub was fixed in a reasonable timeframe, whereas getting the needed linens was not. I too warn that the Front Desk is understaffed, especially on peak days (Sat/Sun) during turnover periods. It is worth a try...Enjoy the area.

Almost Perfect!

My mom, dad, brother, sister, brother's friend and I stayed at the Powhatan Plantation. It was our first time staying there. It was the best trip I've ever been on in my life. The workers were very nice and polite. They helped us with everything that we needed. Yes, we did have to call for maintenance one time because there was a problem with the air conditioner, but the maintenance people came and helped us with the problem right away. That was the only problem we had all week. It is a beautiful resort. I really enjoyed the teen pizza/pool party. I got to meet many people my age. I would recommend anyone to go there.

Wow!! We were wonderfully surprised by this resort. Prior to going we had read quite a few negative reports on Powhatan and were a little nervous, since we had booked 2 weeks there. When we arrived, the staff were very friendly and helpful, and we got in with very minimal wait.
The fresh, warm cookies were great. We were in a newer unit, and it was very clean and in good repair. No spots on the carpet or furniture, and everything was in good working condition. If we ever needed anything, they were very timely in their response. The staff at the activities desk were great and told us of neat off-the-beaten-path places to visit in addition to giving sound advice (and directions) on the regular tourist attractions. The grounds were immaculate and beautiful, and we enjoyed the wildlife wandering around. We had two teenage girls with us and they loved it as much as we did. We would recommend Powhatan without any reservation and hope to return to visit someday.
