Historical Traveller Reviews of Lexington George Washington Inn Hotel

Renovations may take a while

from ChrisWestminster_MD
My family and I stayed at the Lexington GW Inn during the Memorial Day weekend. After reading the previous reviews I decided to call the hotel directly for information concerning the renovations. In doing so I made the reservation.

We arrived at night finding the property dark and very uninviting. Actually a little scary. Once inside the lobby was nice, but just ok. Check in was good. The staff is vey nice, but the hotel needs a great deal of work.

We stayed in the left wing of the hotel which should have been closed until renovations have been completed. The carpet was dirty, the hallway smelled bad and the lock on our door did not work. It looked as if someone tried to do a quick fix to make the room accommodating. The oveall appearence in that wing was bad. The right wing was a little nicer.

From what we were told by staff member, the hotel will be very nice once the renovations are completed which can take another year or so.

My advise it to stay elsewhere for now. Give it some time and than give he hotel a second chance.

what a change

This hotel was very nice and will be back. I have told all my friends and family to stay there when they take there yearly trip to busch gardens. Kris was so very helpful and friendly. I hope all your staff is as nice. The food was great and the changes were wonderful. I look forward to seeing the finished product. I will be back. Thank you.

Loved the stay

I had the pleasure of staying at the Lexington George Washington Inn & Conference Center during the beginning of the month of May. This was not our first time lodging there, but we were amazed by the changes made. We were nervous about staying again, since our first visit didn't go too well.
As a traveler, I know the value of a hotel when I first walk through the door, and when i walked through the door the first time, the hotel felt like a dungeon. When we returned, we were amazed to see the several changes made. The lobby was enlarged and brightened, and it was evident there were various phases of renovations taking place. The guest rooms were extremely neat, clean, comfortable, and the staff was very friendly. I would definitely stay at this hotel again! I have already recommended this hotel to all of my friends!

Please stay elsewhere

I hate to give such an awful review, becasue I can normally find some small thing that would be a positive; however, this is not the case here. The hotel recently re-did their lobby, which looks nicer than the rest of the hotel and the rooms. The service clerk at check-in was very nice. These were the only positive things about this hotel. First, be warned, this is a hotel and conference center - they book events to make money, and don't care about the individual traveler experience. While there for 1 night, we were booked in a room right behind where a senior prom was thumping (very loud music) and going on until very late. I am not without sympathy, I too was a senior at one point, but why put us in a block of rooms next to a prom? My husband called the front desk to complain and the night manager actually started arguing with him! (They could not move us either, we asked...) Has all customer servcie completely gone out the window? This is what irked me more than anything. Also, we were booked in a hallway with an entire military division, and at 7am they did roll-call in the hallway. I know, necessary evils, but after the other issues, this was the last straw for me. During check-out the next day, the day manager asked how our stay was - we told him and he did take 50% off the room. Which in my opinion was the least he could do.
The room was also not without fault - very dingy, needs to be updated; the bathroom tile was cracked and falling apart.

If you are traveling with children, or family, or looking for a comfortable, quiet place to stay, this is not it. Williamsburg has so many other choices, so I would look at those first.

Great Stay!!!!!

I just returned from my first trip to Williamsburg VA and I couldn't be happier that I picked the Lexington George Washington. Some of these negative reviews in the past couldn't be farther from the truth. The new changes are absolutely great. I can't wait to visit again to see the rest of the renovations finished. The best part of the stay would have to be the staff. Everyone on the staff was willing to go out of their way to make the stay more comfortable. I would highly recommend this hotel to everyone!

Okay stay at the George Washington Inn!

The George Washington Hotel / Inn was a large hotel that looked a little worn and old. The staff was always pleasant and helpful the room was clean and neat. The stay was Okay and nice.

Loved the George Washinton Inn!!!!!!

Let me start by saying that I have never seen a hotel pay so much attention to details! I was hesitiant at first due to the hotel's independant name but am so glad I decided to have my group stay there.

They were undergoing renovations to the inside during our stay and made sure that my group was not inconvienced in any way. They welcomed us with a friendly staff and even placed a little goodie bag in all our rooms! What a nice touch.

We had the privledge of dining in the newly reopened restaurant and I have to say the service and food qulaity was the best! They offered a hot breakfast buffet as well as a cook to order. This was very helpful for the kids as well as the adults. We also had a chance to eat dinner there and let me just say that it was the best steak and seafood we have ever had! We understood that the hotel recently hired an exectuive chef from New York and I bet he is a well hidden talent! I have told everyone I know about how good the food was.

Rooms were very clean and comfortable and the pillow top mattresses were like sleeping on a cloud!

I can't say enough about how happy I am with this hotel and so much so that I have rebooked for next year! Trust me this hotel is worth the money!!!!

Not as bad as suspected ...

We were part of a large tour group coming in for the Jamestown 400th celebration. Reviews I'd read here had me pretty concerned, but worst fears were NOT realized. I don't think this property is a Clarion anymore, as there was nothing on their website, and no Clarion sign. It looks as though the new owners are TRYING to restore it's former status as a decent conference hotel -- restaurant, large ballroom, halls and rooms have all been repainted, retiled, new furniture, nice pillowtop beds, new carpeting -- however, all was done with lower end appointments ... wonder what it will look like in a few years. Very much appreciated was the small in-room fridge and microwave. Still in need of a spruceup are elevators and courtyard (great potential here), and their food is a small step above hospital. Some fresh fruits and vegetables would have gone a long way to improve things. The staff is very nice and accomodating, so overall, it was not a bad stay.

just awful

from smithtravel
This is the worst hotel I have ever stayed and/or attended a conference. The smell was just awful from the moment you walked in the building. The bathroom on the lower floor smelled like a sewer. Cleanliness was just terrible. During the conference, I ordered a vegitarian meal and was served Salmon cakes. The side salad was made with lettuce that was white and looked old. The ranch was watered down and had no flavor. Coffee was old. I would discourage anyone from holding a conference here and staying there should be avoided at all costs.

Okay, But Kind of Rundown

from emmi331
The George Washington Inn must be one of the "bargain" hotels in the Williamsburg area. The rooms are pretty standard and reasonably clean (though more thorough vacuuming could be done under the beds), with a decent-sized vanity area in the bathrooms. A good shower head was also much appreciated.
However, a hotel this size should serve a decent breakfast in the mornings - a rather boring-looking cold continental breakfast was provided, which I skipped in favor of a local waffle house. Evidently hot breakfasts are provided only during certain months. Overall, the hotel's appearance inside and out is a bit dingy. A large smorgasbord sign dominates the front of the hotel; with enough letters unlit at night it read "gasbord", which at least generated a few laughs in our group!
Since historic Williamsburg is such a delight, next time I would enhance a pleasant visit by paying for a more upscale hotel.
