Would stay there again

The Governor's Inn has evidently been refurbished since earlier reviews were posted here. My husband and I spent one night there in recent days, and found the hotel to be very acceptable. Check-in staff was friendly and helpful. Our room was very clean and odor-free, with a comfortable bed. Towels were nice, thick cream-colored ones, rather than scratchy white. Shuttle service provided to the historic area. Continental breakfast was served in a clean, cheerful area with an attendant maintaining the food area and keeping tables cleaned. The only problem we encountered was that our room was one of a pair of adjoining rooms and we could hear noises from the adjoining room coming in around the door. While it's a no frills facility, similar to chain hotels in the same price range, we would recommend the Governor's Inn and would stay there again.

I stayed at this place in early Dec (11-15). I also had read some of the earlier bad reports, and like some others, decided to judge when I got there. I took the advice of another reviewer, and asked for a renovated room. My room was very basic, no frills, but neat, clean, everything in working order, comfortable, and quiet. Since the point of my trip was to spend all day in Williamsburg and the surrounding area, not stay in the room, it fit my needs perfectly. Also, I got a great special deal online - $49 per night, slightly higher on weekends. The staff was very helpful and pleasant. The complimentary breakfast was good, with a wide variety of stuff. I was also impressed with the security response. Once, the fire alarm went off. I phoned the front desk, who already knew, and had already swung into action. About two minutes after my call, the security guard was banging on my door telling me to evacuate, and the fire trucks showed up about a minute later. Turned out the alarm had been triggered by renovation going on in one of the other rooms. Nothing was damaged and we were back in our rooms in ten minutes.
Another time, when one of the lightbulbs in my rooms blew out, I phoned the desk to report it, and maintenance was there in under ten minutes to replace the bulb. All in all I found the staff to be very responsive to calls, and helpful to guests. I would definitely go there again.

Given the price, the location and the fact that it's part of Colonial Williamsburg, we would definitely stay here again! Looking at the CW website, you kind of feel like since this is the "budget-level" lodging, it might not be up to snuff. During our 3 night stay in Sept 2004, we found the rooms to be clean and comfortable, the staff friendly and the continental breakfast above average. I took the advice of another reviewer and asked for a renovated room. It's not a "quaint historic inn" like the name makes it sound, but it's fine!

I stayed at the Governor's Inn in August. They gave us keys to a room that was rented to someone else.....we opened the door, and found the room was occupied by other people! We got another room and it was unclean....there was hair on the bathroom floor.....the sinks were dirty too. There was dirt and items under the bed which indicated someone had not vacumned very well. We found a live grasshopper in one one of the made-up beds.....after that we found a grasshopper in the bathroom and had one jump on one of us in the dark. We complained to the front desk and it did not do any good. We ended up leaving the hotel a night early, but we did get a full refund.

The Governors Inn located on the historic grounds of Williamsburg was not up to par with the rest of facilities. It was not clean and had mold around the bathroom tub and rooms.

The breakfast was the most positive aspect of the stay.

The touring of the historical sites was good. The 4th of July parade and fife and drums were outstanding

This was a return trip to our honeymoon stay of 40 years ago.

My family spent part of our summer vacation in Williamsburg about a year ago and we stayed here. We were lucky to get a clean room, but it was small and the bathroom even smaller. There wasn't much room for our suitcases, let alone us. Also the wait for the continental breakfast in the mornings was ridiculous, partly because the area where they laid out the food looked like the size of a breakfast nook for a family of 4, instead of a hotel full of people. We ended up going out for breakfast, which turned out to be a good thing because we discovered a neat place called Mama Steve's House of Pancakes.

Pleasant Surprise

I had read several previous reviews on this site and was very close to canceling our reservation. We decided to go ahead and look at the room first and then leave if it was as dirty as the reviews had indicated. What a great surprise we had. We found the room to be clean and the staff friendly. We only paid $70 a night for 4 and felt we got a great bargain. We walked to the historic section every day (we could have taken a free van ride but loved the short walk). It is definetly not a high end hotel, but for the budget minded, it was great! We have stayed at several other hotels in the area and thought this was the best value.

A very pleasant surprise

I, too, read the earlier very negative reviews of this hotel and, with great trepidation, decided not to cancel my reservations but to let my own eyes be the judge. I was very pleasantly surprised. I have traveled many places in this country and abroad so I, too, can judge a flea bag when I see one.
The design of the room was early Holiday Inn or Howard Johnson's. The room had been renovated recently and had new carpeting, fresh paint and drapes and the bathroom had a new insert insuring that the bathroom was spotless. The purpose of my trip was not to stay in the room and marvel at the furnishings, but to have a comfortable place to stay after spending all day every day at Colonial Williamsburg and other nearby historic sites. The hotel room was more than adequate for that purpose, the hotel staff was very cordial and went out of their way to be accomodating.
Each morning on the free continental breakfast bar were a choice of juices, donuts, danish, English muffins, toast, cereal, fresh fruit, and yogurt. Coffee, tea and hot chocolate were also available. There was a very pleasant breakfast room, but I chose to have my breakfast by the lovely outdoor pool. The hotel van driver went out of his way to make sure that we were at Cristiana Campbell's in time for our reservation.
In addition, my son's entrance to Williamsburg was free and we had 50% off of any of the extra evening activities that we chose. We also were able to upgrade our tickets to be good through 2005. At $89.00 per night that is a steal in anybody's book. (I even overheard the on site reservation clerk offering a room there at
$79. It is a great place for families and anyone else who enjoys a travel bargain. Yuppie's who are impressed with their own status probably won't be happy there.
My husband and I make just under $200,000 per year. We are not poor, but we don't waste money on unnecessary luxury when clean and comfortable will do. The hotel was clean and my bed was very comfortable and the room was qUIET.
jUST TO BE SURE ASK FOR A RENOVATED ROOM.

I read the other reviews here about this hotel and was fully prepared to leave upon check-in if it was anything close to what has been posted...the room was basic and the a/c was pretty noisey but other than that...the staff was very pleasant and very helpful (got a great tip on a local restaurant!). The room was clean and more than adequate for us. We are not big travelers but I know when a place is a dump-this wasn't. We walked to the historic district...it wasn't on the same block but we were there in 10 minutes. If you don't need (or can't afford) fancy-this was fine. Plus we saved $15 a piece off our Williamsburg pass by staying there (or any Williamsbury Hotel).

The reviews I read on here had me very scared for my upcoming trip to Williamsburg. I waas expecting the worse of this hotel. THIS HOTEL IS NOT WHAT THESE PEOPLE HAVE POSTED! This was a very well serviced hotel. The rooms were very clean and the service was very welcoming. I enjoyed their continental breakfast and the well rested nights. The train tracks next to the hotel do not disturb you in the night. I would go back to this hotel any time I vistited Williamsburg.

Top Local Tips for Williamsburg

Package Plans I would definitely suggest going with a package plan. We booked the Governor's Inn (a CW hotel) through the Colonial Willaimsburg web site as well as getting a ticket package. The deal was fantastic plus we were able to attend the evening programs at a discount rate. The reservation and check-in process was seemless. The typical stress of making sure everything was covered was greatly relieved. Plus they will deliver packages from CW to your hotel and charges can be placed on your bill when dining or shopping in CW.

Free Coupon Books for Outlet Malls Make sure you pick up the free guides -- one of them had cupons for free coupon books. We found them after we paid $5 for a coupon book we used at Prime Outlets!

Find a unique momento to mark your trip In Merchants square you will find the regular CW items for sale. There are a couple of exceptions one is the high end jewelry shop across from the Kimball Theatre. The majority of the pieces are designed and made there. The second spot is a fine arts shop that carries pottery, jewelry, art glass, wooden puzzle boxes and other unique finds. The shop is within a shopping arcade within Market Square.
