Too Small

from tywwia
First, let's deal with the positives: the staff was friendly and attentive. The suites were clean, and quiet, at least with regards to other suites; we never heard any of our neighbors. There is a nice fitness room, and while we did not use it, the pool looked nice for lounging, if not laps. As with all (most?) Embassy Suites, you get a good full breakfast and a manager's reception. The hotel was not heavily booked while we were there, so it's hard to judge, but parking seemed plentiful.

On the down side: The suites are the smallest I have seen for Embassy Suites. We are fairly certain that this was a regular (non-suite) hotel that was then retro-fitted for Embassy Suites - you could see where the wall separating the living room and bedroom was added. As a result, these 2 rooms were a bit smaller, though not unbearably so. The bathroom, especially the bathtub/shower was a bit too snug. The main problem, though was the door and the separation between the living room and bedroom. Unlike most Embassy Suites that I have seen, the bathroom was at the front, not between the two rooms. Therefore, the bedroom and living room abut onto each other fully. This would not be a problem, except that the door between them is a sliding glass door with a curtain over the windows (you can see a picture on the hotel home page). As a result, light and noise bled through easily. On family travel, we have our 7 year old with us - we found that the noise from our TV and the light from our bedroom intruded into the living room while she was trying to go to sleep; in the morning, the reverse was true when she woke up early and turned on the TV in the living room. Basically, you lose most of the privacy advantages of a suite for family travel...

The room was not bad for a couple on their own, but I would look at another suite hotel first for family travel...

Outdated, but clean. Great management makes the difference.

We stayed here in Dec. 2003 and again in October 2004 and did not notice a change.

Yes, the rooms and the atrium need renovation. Since we are govt employees, the rate certainly makes it palatable.

The hotel is staffed by courteous, efficient employees and managed well. This ameliorates the mint green and peach decor.

My children loved the unlimited Shirley Temples and Goldfish (if they put out a spicy snack, just let them know you would like something else). My husband and I loved the free wine, beer and spirits- Carl is friendly and accomodating. The breakfast was good, typical cooked to order Embassy fare.

We are not sure at what price we would not stay here but considering our very bad experience at the local Homewood, this hotel trumps that one at any price.

Great hotel

from harters
Without question, one of the best hotels we stayed in during a three week trip to North America. And, for the price, certainly the best value for money.

We were spending four nights here and we found the suite spacious with everything you could need. When we first arrived, one of the two TVs wasn't working, but this was replaced, within minutes, by a very efficient and friendly member of staff.

The staff in general were extremely pleasant and helpful, especially the chefs in the "cooked to order" breakfast section. Great idea, that.

The manager's "free drink" was something we hadn't come across before. Another plus point. The comment in an earlier post about smokers seems over-exagerated. We are non-smokers and were untroubled byt he fact that smokers are restircted to one end of a very large lobby area.

We liked it.

t stay again

When we entered the hotel we were surprised to find people smoking. We had to walk through a haze of cigarette smoke to get to the elevators. We had specifically requested a non-smoking room due to 2 family members who have severe asthma that can't be around smoke. When we got to our room it was small but we didn't plan on spending much time in the room. However, it had a smell of cigarette smoke. We confirmed again that we were in a non smoking room and were told the whole floor was non smoking. We then also asked about the people smoking in the atrium and hallways. We were told smoking is allowed in the public areas of the hotel. This of course meant we were unable to enjoy the breakfast or the evening reception. It also turns out we were one floor below the smoking floor and the venelation systems were shared. This caused major health problems for our child and we were told "that is the risk you take when you stay in a hotel."

Definitely not up to Embassy Suites standards!

from pjmcjm
Just got back from vacation where we stayed three nights (July 11-13) at this Embassy Suites, and I agree with the last three reviews. We were disappointed with this hotel. Our two-double-bed suite was VERY small (I can't remember staying in a smaller one, and the Hampton Inn suites we stayed in later in our trip were TWICE as big as this place), and it definitely needed to be refurbished. The four of us felt crowded in this suite, and there really wasn't any good place to put our suitcases. There was a huge tear in the vinyl wallcovering on the window sill, and a piece of duct tape fell from behind the drapes at the end of our hall when we were walking to the stairs once. I think they are duct taping everything together instead of making proper repairs! There are two VERY slow elevators (which is why we were using the stairs). We couldn't vouch for the cleanliness of the pool because it was closed two of the three days we were there! The water was even turned off one day, but we were gone and it didn't really bother us. The breakfasts were very good, and there was a nice separate room to sit and enjoy it if you didn't want to be in the atrium. The manager's reception was OK, but I thought that the meager snacks they served were stale. Also, Virginia law prohibits you from taking any alcoholic beverages back to your room, so you have to sit in the atrium which wasn't always our choice. The suites have a sliding door separating the two rooms, but there is only fabric covering the glass panes of the doors. So the bedroom can't really be dark if you have an 18-year-old up late watching TV!! On the plus side, most of the employees were very nice and helpful. The hotel itself is located right across the street from Pirate's Cove miniature golf and Dairy Queen (always a good thing!). And you can walk to the K-Mart next door if you need anything. The best thing that happened to us there was that my husband left his wallet on the roof of our rental car the very first night we were there. Another guest found it, turned it in and we got it back with ALL of the cash and 4 credit cards inside!! It's tough to have too many negative feelings about a place when that happens...especially since we were using Hilton Honors points and got our three nights free. However, I think we would try one of the many other hotels in the area before coming back here.

Not the worst and Not the best

Lets start with the good stuff! Great location close to all the action but it feels like its in the middle of nowhere. It is a nice place with friendly staff and a great breakfast, omelet’s everyday will spoil you! The only things I did not like was the outdated style of the rooms, look a little bit worn down and the pool could have been a little cleaner (Not terrible) but not perfect.

I would stay here in the future for less than I paid but I do not feel it’s a $200 a night hotel!

Disappointed...

from Skrapbooker
We were disappointed in this hotel. It wasn't nearly as nice as the other Embassy Suite hotels I've seen before...and not what we expected. The atrium is pretty, but not as pretty as any others I've seen. Our room was outdated. The furniture was not nice. It seemed more like a cozy family out-of-date suite than a romantic getaway. We had a king suite with jacuzzi and paid over $200 per night. It was nice...but not what we expected at all. The staff was helpful enough and the breakfast was good. Also, it was Memorial Day weekend & was quite noisy with kids running everywhere. If you're looking for romance, head elsewhere...

Great Place - Getting a Bit Worn Around the Edges

from A TripAdvisor Member
This is a good place that used to be a great place. I have stayed here an average of 3 times a year and I have seen a decline.

On the plus side, you can't beat the free buffett breakfast with made to order omlets and the nightly Manager's reception with free drinks from 5-7 PM.

The public areas are clean, except for the pool, which is always dirty.
The rooms are clean. However, most of the rooms need to be renovated.
My last stay was in Feb 2004 and there were so many things wrong with my room, I made a list and gave it to the front desk. Some of the items were: the sliding partition between the bed room and the living would not stay on the track. There were some holes on the wall. The carpet should have been replaced years ago. The walls had stains. If I was staying longer I would have requested another room.

My next trip to Williamsburg with the family is next month and I am trying a new place because of the decline.

Great for kids!

from A TripAdvisor Member
My family of four stayed here while we were visiting Colonial Williamsburg on March 11. The hotel is not large, but the rooms are plenty spacious, clean, and decorated nicely. The service and the personnnel were terrific! We loved our free breakfast, which was superb, and the happy hour! Our boys, who are 11, thought the pool and jacuzzi were the "best in the whole world!" It is a very kid-friendly place, and they even serve Pizza Hut Pizza. It was a wonderful place to stay, especially for the price!

Great Honeymoon!

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed here for our honeymoon. The staff was wonderful! They brought us complimentary champagne and offered us free drinks at the bar. The breakfast was fantastic and our room was extremely clean and nice. If we could afford this property every year, we'd be back every anniversary. Do not hesitate to stay here!

Top Local Tips for Williamsburg

Yorktown and Jamestown are better than Williamsburg for young elementary age kid We have wanted to visit Williamsburg for many years and took our 7 yr old son there for a weekend. While Williamsburg is very interesting to us, our son much preferred Yorktown and Jamestown and we clearly understood why! Highly recommend either or both of them - we learned a lot too and felt the price was reasonable as well.

Enjoy it lots to do!! Williamsburg is a great vacation spot. There is so much to do in the area, the shopping is great, Colonial Williamsburg is great, Busch Gardens is great (a little expensive but great), Jamestown Settlement is close, the plantations around the area are great to visit, the Williamsburg Winery is the best Winery tour I have been on. And what more can you ask in an hour you are in Virginia Beach, Two and a half hours our Nations capital. If you are looking for a place to party and go dancing Williamburg is not the area....great for families andhoneymooners and older folks.

Ghost Tours Take a ghost tour one evering. Our kids loved it. We took the one run by Williamsburg Inc. so don't know about others. This one dealt with things that happened recently to employees. Others may have different foci.
