Nasty/Dirty/Arrogant Staff
from eflassetI requested two more rooms and the guy at the front desk said that since I booked through Expedia that he was not going to do anything. Then in his next breath said that "if I had booked through the hotel he could upgrade me and take care of me, but since I booked through Expedia I needed to talk to them" What an arrogant SOB.
Well thank you very much, after driving with four kids (2,3,4,5) for 7 hours I did not expect this type of treatment.
My advice DON"T EVEN THINK ABOUT STAYING HERE. I have stayed in VA Beach a lot but first and last time here.
Totally Shocked
from ronaldgfellWhen we did finally get someone to empty the two miniature trash cans in our room, the individual spent too much time in our bathroom, and not knowing the staff needed to be watched, we found medication missing from my seven day pill container which was laying on travel kit in the bathroom. The missing medication was not found until the next morning and needless to say, we would not have anyone come back to empty trash, we just put it outside the door. Hope the people who take the medication don't get sick, as it was mostly heart and blood pressure, but there were some beta blockers in there they probably wanted to sell on the street. How sad we had to be exposed to a theft while here. We will come back to Virginia Beach, but we will only stay at an home we rent from a private owner. If you decide to stay at the Wyndham, make sure you lock up your medication in the safe, nevery thought anyone would want to take my heart meds, but guess they are more precious than I thought. I won't have enough medication for the last day of this trip, but after driving home ten hours on Monday when we leave, I can take my morning medication there in Ohio when we pull in around 6 or 8 pm.
Average hotel at a good location
from juscinPros: Location, Location, Location
Cons: Becoming outdated
Overall: I have to rank it as average, although for conferences I would recommend. If the hotel updates the interior of the rooms, including the carpet and linen, I would give it a much higher rating.
Rooms are Filthy
from britishinvasionOn a brighter note, the restaurant was excellent with great food and even better staff.
Although I can't say our whole stay was ruined as we were at a beautiful beach I can say that Wyndham should shut its doors until they finish their renovations as it is just unfair to allow people to pay for such filth.
Great hotel for the price
from ronicapI also enjoyed the Surf Grille restaurant. The dessert there is excellent.
Adequate-Will stay again
from tequila-sunrise00It is not directly on the beach but its just a few steps away. It's in a residential area quite aways from the boardwalk so that part of the beach isn't crowded.
You can see the ocean from the balcony and the rooftops of the surrounding homes. Still a nice view.
They also have a shuttle that takes drops off and picks up near the boardwalk every hour.
There was covered parking.
We had a jacuzzi room. It was spotless but lacking a couple of amenities I was expecting.
There was no dvd player. I hadn't noticed this wasn't listed on the amenities list.
What was on the list was bathrobes and a lighted make up mirror , which it had neither but it was no big deal.
A couple of small amenities I could appreciate was coffee maker with coffee, sugar, cream in stock and real coffee mugs.
The microwave and mini fridge were very clean.
There were also real drinking glasses in the room along with the paper cups.
The vending area on the 6th floor was just a coke and ice machine, no snack machine. However, there is a restaurant on the premises. (Which we didn't visit.)
The vending area appears to double as storage for a couple of rollaway beds, pillows and extra chairs. Not attractive, but not a big deal.
A couple of definite pluses was the price, it was on the lower end of the price range for the oceanfront for this time of year. Most jacuzzi rooms are a bit more expenisive than this one.
Also, this time of year most hotels require a 2 or 3 night minimum stay on the weekend, Wyndham allowed us to stay for one night.
All in all, it was a good stay and I would stay there again.
Wonderful Wyndham visit!
from travelnut4Very happy with our stay, nice place
from gotkidswilltravelPROS: clean and spacious room, decor and carpet average, bed very comfy, nice hotel amenities, pool open until 10 pm, quieter and beach much less crowded than down on main strip, microwave and kitchen in all rooms, staff friendly or at least neutral (not rude as other reviews said), kayak rental available at hotel, indoor and outdoor pools that don't face a busy road, whirlpool
CONS: boardwalk does not extend up to this hotel, cannot walk to restaurants other than the one at the hotel, hotel is not in the main strip area if that's what you want, hallways are not air conditioned (which appears to be the norm at Va Beach and is no big deal).
I will say that the kid's activities sound better than they actually are, but they are still ok in limited amounts. Although the daily kids' schedule is good in theory, the kids' room is small and is staffed by bored 20 year old's who don't follow the schedule that well . The staff seem to rely on DVDs a lot to entertain themselves and/or the kids. I was ok with leaving my daughter there for an hour or two for crafts, but not more.
Now, here's some inside information on the rooms. There are three guests areas: the 17 story Tower Building (all rooms face ocean), the small East Building (smaller and cheaper rooms, some face pool, some half face ocean), and the Suite Rooms over the parking garage (no rooms face ocean). I saw a one bedroom suite and it was huge, but the kitchen facilities were limited to the exact same mini fridge and microwave that was in my regular room. Also, the upper 3 floors of the Tower Building are "Tower Club rooms" which are a little more expensive, come with a simple breakfast included, and have the upgraded decor shown on the website. The decor in the other rooms was fine, but nothing special.
In sum, I highly recommend the Wyndham and would definitely stay there again.
I thought it was great!
from CAm0mWe had a tower room and the beds were comfortable and it was cleaned every day. We were oceanfront and liked sitting on our balcony and listening to the live music at the restaurant below. Our room had a refrigerator, microwave, and coffeepot, so we could have breakfast and snacks in our room (very important when you are traveling alone with three small children).
I'd stay here again without thinking twice. I was worried based on the reviews, but I thought it was a wonderful place , especially for a beach hotel in July.
Be sure to request a renovated room!
from MominVAThis is a great location for families. It is away from the busy boardwalk. It has a wide, empty beach because there are residential neighborhoods on both sides. There are fun, low-key (and mostly free) kids club activities. True, the pools are small (but we're here for the beach, and it's geat!), and the elevators are slow and tiny (I saw a line of about 15 people waiting for a tower elevator this afternoon.), but I could forgive these last 2 in favor of the positive aspects, if only I were in one of those newly renovated rooms! Right now, I just feel cheated.
Top Local Tips for Virginia Beach
Hotel restaurants on the Virginia Beach oceanfront too pricey for what you get I would venture out into the mainland area of Virginia Beach to find additional dining options next time. Restaurants on the beachfront tend to be a little pricey with not much in the way of gourmet offerings. We did liked Catch 31, which was on the beachfront, but otherwise there wasn't too much in the immediate resort area to rave about. Also a little bit out of town was a wonderful Mexican restaurant called Guadalahara. Very, very good.
Where the "Real People" and families eat. Head West on Laskin Rd to Captain George's Seafood.. Wonderful Buffet with everything from Crab to Prime Rib.. over 60 items to choose from. Reasonable Price.. about $28.00 each adult.. You can stuff your 12 year old son full of crab legs at this place and still have some money to make it home on.
Captain Georges Forget the rest of the buffets on the strip, eat at Captain Georges.
