our family stayed on the 9th floor at the cavalier oceanfront, room 926 to be exact. this was a suite, and everything seemed to be nice and clean, service was great, but on the morning of our last day my 8 year came running into our bedroom and was screaming there was a cockroach in the pull out bed. so i went in there and sure enough there was a HUGE COCKROACH lying on the bed. are you kidding me, almost $300.00 per night and cockroaches on the bed??? and eveyone knows that when there is one there are many. although the stay was nice and very enjoyable i can say we wont be back at the cavalier.

Number one, I'm very picky at where I stay. Number two, I LOVE the Cavalier oceanfront. Let me explain why. The rooms are spacious and very clean. All of the rooms include a wonderful view of either pool side, ocean, or the strip. The pool area along with its usual live bands are great. The breakfast was HUGE and free. Plus you get a 100$ to spend anywhere in the hotel, you can't beat that! Don't listen to some of these people, trust me. I'm a Commanding Officer in the US Navy, I'm picky

Great Hotel, Great Bargain.....NICE Staff

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this hotel! I am used to staying in 4 or five star hotels and after reading reviews on the Cavalier I was a bit skeptical. This hotel is clean, and certainly a GREAT bargain on the beach. It has a somewhat private, wide beach and lovely pool, practically right on the beach. Checking in and out was no problem. we actually arrived around 12:30 and were able to check in and proceed to our room on the sixth floor immediately. The staff was very friendly and the prices of the food at their restaurants was affordable. I would recommend this hotel to anyone!! We stayed in the oceanfront hotel. We took a look at the hotel on the hill and it was nice as well.

Very Nice, Just what we were looking for

This hotel was just what we were looking for. No drunks screaming, no teenagers running around all night. It is more for a family stay than singles. I personally liked the way the hotel was decorated, some say that it looks old and reminds them of the "Shinning", but that is the decor that I prefer anyway. And no I am not 80 years old, I am 38 and my wife is 34, we have 3 children and we all enjoyed the hotel.

This will be our hotel next year at the beach.

I am writing this review because I booked the hotel in June 2005, then found this website. I saw negative reviews about the Cavalier and considered changing our plans. I am glad we didn't.

We did the Midweek package where you arrive on a Sunday or Monday and get a buffet breakfast every day (saves $15-25 per day), $100 Cavalier bucks (used for dinner one night as well as poolside drinks and lunch), plus a $20 fuel card. What a package. This saves alot of money, especially since my husband is a huge eater and loves breakfast.

The rooms were neat and clean. Nice. Staff was good and helpful, especially the concierge.

The elevators were slow, but HELLO, this is a beach. What hotels have fast elevators at a beach??? Unless you are staying at a Hilton, expect slow elevators or ask for a room on a lower floor.

The workout room was pretty fair for a beach hotel. To get there you had to go through the basement which felt like a sauna. But again, IT IS A BEACH HOTEL!

I was very satisfied and would recommend this hotel to anyone. The pool faces the ocean so you can layout at the pool and hear and see the beautiful ocean waves.

Just don't forget about the $20 fuel card. They won't give it to you until you check-out and the agent forgot to give it to us. We had to go back to get it.

PS. Captain George's is the best food for your money. Try the Flan (from the movie Envy).

So much (wasted) potential

The website boasts their amenities (pools, fitness center, game room, kids program, shuffleboard, etc.). All of these things exist, but their website marketer is very good at making it sound better than it really is. The game room is in a dungeon-like basement room, the fitness center is the same....you'll never work out again! Most of the amenities aren't kept as good as they should be. The landscape and grounds are beautifully kept! Kudos for that. Our dining experiences were very good, the Orion meals were very tasty! Kids program was more like organized babysitting. The girls who teach are very sweet, but the hotel should give them more to work with...again, wasted potential! Kids Cafe is "Dinner and a movie on the floor of half of a private dining room." My kids had a good time, but it could be so much more. This hotel/resort has so much potential and wasted space, especially the hotel on the hill. They could do so much more with this property and attact a much more sophisticated crowd. We stayed on the hill for two nights and then moved to the ocean hotel for the remainder of our trip. Hotel on the hill is definitely cleaner, prettier, and less expensive. I was very disappointed, expected so much more for that rate.

This place is a dump

Stayed at the cavalier for a professional conference. Between the dingy accomodations, drunk underage kids screaming profanity around the pool, and absolutely horrendous food and service at the poolside restaurant I will never stay here or recommend this place to anybody. We walked to the newly built Hilton with wonderful new restaurants and would have moved if we were staying in town longer than one night.

While growing up in Virginia Beach, the Cavalier was the gold standard for fine resort hotels. NO MORE!! What a classless dump. Only the ineptitude of the management exceeds the rudeness of the staff. One can only hope for a very large tidal wave.

Another Great Year at the Cavalier Hotel

We just returned from another stay at the Cavalier Oceanfront Hotel. This was our second year. Once again, we were very happy with the accommodations. The hotel is very nice and clean. Our room was directly on the oceanfront and was cleaned every day in the morning. Our kids enjoyed the Kid's Camp and Kid's Cafe very much, which allowed my husband and I some much-needed alone time. The breakfast buffet which was included with our mid-week package was awesome. I would recommend this hotel to anyone!

Needs work

We were more impressed with the older part of the hotel across the street. Had a nice indoor pool and still maintained the decor of the earlier part of the last century. The room we stayed at in the newer section was musty and needed the carpet to be changed after so many years of sand in the rug. The restaurants were fine and the food was good and prices were not too bad. A little updating and it might not be a bad place to stay.

I was fooled by all the hype this hotel put out. Please don't bother to stay here, it is highly overrated and overcharged. The rooms are tooo small, I have stayed in many hotels and this was the smallest and most expensive. Definitely too small for a family, as we had 2 adults and 2 children. Could barely move around the room without bumping into each other. The beds were sagging and the room was just old. The hallways and lobby in the hotel were musty and very humid. This is not to mention all of the problems we had with the front desk staff's rudeness, and unprofessional ways. So many problems with the billing I can't begin to discuss - including being charged an extra $100. A front desk supervisor KIKI had a very bad attitude, spoke with manager Kelly Hills wasn't much help no apologies presented. Asked for the next person in charge who was the Vice President. Manager claimed he was not answering his page and she could not reach him. Spent an hour and a half trying to check out and have the hotel release an extra hold on my account, not to mention the approximately 45 minutes spent the night before supposedly checking out just to avoid the morning rush. Needless to say I had to leave without the extra charge being resolved, left a voice mail on the general manager/vice president's answering machine, no return call as of 24 hours. There was one young man who acted in a way I would expect a front desk person to act when confronted with a difficult situation and his name was Justin. Less expensive hotels have better accomadations. Please don't bother!

Stayed in the oceanfront rooms with my mother and sister a couple years ago for 2 nights...the lobby was nice, the rooms were "okay", but they were very over-rated. On my next visit the Spring of 2004, we stayed in the Cavalier on the Hill. It is old, and as should have been expected, was not 'elegant'. The hotel is nice for the history and beauty, but I will not stay in the rooms there again. It gave me the feeling of being in the movie "The Shining". Then, after checking my checking account the following week, I found out that I was charged $50 extra on my debit card for "just in case" incidentals. No one told me this upfront. Needless to say, I will not stay at either Cavalier again.

Take a walk along Atlantic avenue at night The City of Virginia Beach has hired performers to entertain people walking along the west side of Atlantic Avenue (Beach Street) for free. We heard some great music. I suspect that this only happens during the summer.

Pay attenton to the locals when it comes to dining If you don't mind eating average to below average food near the beach then go inland to dine. We made that mistake and weren't to happy about the boardwalk restauarants.

Things to do with TODDLERS Aquarium, Zoo, Beach Street USA, find the magicians, Saloon Picture (too much fun). DINING=Macaroni Grill, Tropical Smoothie Cafe, Rockafellars for Seafood!
