We love the Capes

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I have 4 children. We take a yearly trip to Va. Beach and always stay at The Capes. My kids do not want to stay at any other location. We have always had good service and the employees are very respectful. The have an indoor pool which is nice and a small cafe'. I do recommend The Capes to anyone who enjoys Ocean Front and right in the middle of all the "action".

My husband and I read the reviews before confirming our reservation w/ the Capes. The reviews were worrisome, but we kept an open mind. Upon arrival, we were happy with the adequate parking and the location (right in the heart of the Virginia Beach oceanfront). The front desk employees were polite and helpful and the check-in process was quick and painless. As other reviews mentioned, the rooms were simple with not alot of additional amenities, but during my 5 day stay, I never had any problems with cleanliness or bugs. Out of curiosity, I asked a hotel employee about the gnats & bugs. The employee stated to me that the oceanfront has been plagued with gnats for years... and that they come and go with the weather.Overall, I enjoyed my stay at the Capes. The people were nice, the rooms were clean, and the location is PERFECT!

Was Worried But.....

I have visited Va Beach for years and years and have stayed at almost all the hotels along the boardwalk. This trip was a last minute plan and our favorites places (which are abit more luxurious) were booked.
An on-line check of The Capes was adequate so I checked the reviews.
BOY WAS I WORRIED!... When I called, the desk personnel were very friendly and cordial as well as professional. Yet I held my breathe due to the reviews that I had seen. We found The Capes to be adequate. Our stay was mainly for the food and ocean therefore it served us well. The room was clean, including the cabinets and frig/microwave. They are alittle stingy on towels and of course no free soap and etc and you had to bring your own coffee. But as mentioned in a previous review, we had no bed bugs or required any repair maintenance to the room. Yes, there is a charge for the ice, but even if you do not pay the 25 cents, push the button anyway, it will give you all the ice you need and they are aware of this. I considered the 25 cent charge a "polite request". The staff we came in contact with were pleasant and courteous. Yes, the pool is small, but it was clean during our visit. We liked the location mainly. AND we keep our balcony door open and we had no beach-gnat problems. Overall, I would try it again, if I am looking for just a place to land. If you want luxury, that are not at fault, for they do not really advertise luxury. They never claimed to be a 5-star site.

Below standards

The capes ocean "RESORT" is hardly a resort if not really a motel. Upon arrival terrified after reading the above reviews, we expected the worst. The greeting from the staff was rather bland and not too welcoming. Altho check-in was quick. On the elevator ride (only 1 elevator btw) there was an announcement about keeping balcony doors shut do to gnats. When we opened the room door we found the balcony of course WIDE open. The front desk was alerted to the situation, sent a lady to look at it and pretended to fix the problem, and said an orderly would be up to fix it, but no one ever arrived. It was necessary to use a luggage strap to fasten the door shut keeping the annoyances out. As for common ammenities extra towels were scarce and there were NOT even free shampoos and soap. ALSO GET THIS THERE WAS A FEE FOR ICE!!!! how cheezy is that, I cant think of ANY HOTEL that does that. Lastly there was just a unclean feeling about the room as well as the stench of cigarette smoke in what supposedly was a non smoking room. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND staying in this place to ANYONE. Unless they live up to the name of RESORT and find the hired help to be more professional it will remain below standard. also i believe the saying you get what you pay for is very very TRUE here.

We HATED HATED HATED The Capes Ocean Resort!! My family & I were there 7/20/03 to 7/24/03. We were supposed to stay untill 7/26/03 but we were forced out because of a BUG INFESTED BED! The first 4 nights we had no bug problems . Then Thurs 7/24/03 after returning back to our room my daughter laid down on her bed and said mommy my head is itchy. To my horror when she stood up her bed was covered in small black bugs!! Worse yet when we called the front dest for help they said they had no night manager and they could not do anything untill morning. We asked for a new room they said they had no vacancy. They didn't even offer us clean linens for the bed or maid service to try and get rid of the bugs. We had no choice but to check out and then they had the nerve to say they were still charging us for the last 2 nights because there is a 72 hour cancelation period. By now it is nearly 11:00 PM they made no effort what so ever to find us another hotel for the night so we had to drive home to NJ . We arrived home at 6:00 AM.The following day after many many calls the manager finally called back with an attitude . He said he wouldn't charge us for 7/25/03 but he was going to charge us for 1/2 of 7/24 . He never disputed the fact that the bed was bug infested but said we still used the room for 1/2 a day so we would have to pay 1/2 of the day. I am still fighting that charge... Do yourself a favor and stay as far away from this hotel as you can.....

The only neutral review

from A TripAdvisor Member
I think I'm the only one to give the Capes a neutral review. It's obviously not the newest hotel on the beach, but the room was clean, the beds comfortable, and the price reasonable. We had a two bedroom suite, which was nice, because the kids had their own room and their own TV. The kitchenette had plenty of cupboard space, but unfortunately, space was all there was in the cupboards. There were no plates, no cups, no utensils of any kind. That was Ok, since we didn't intend to cook in the room. Because our stay was in April, it was important that there be an indoor pool. The Capes' pool is rather small, with a maximum depth of 5', which was great for the kids, although the water was a bit too warm the first night. It was OK after that. The Capes is located right in the middle of the beach and is easy to get too. If you want a clean, comfortable reasonably priced hotel, the Capes is adequate. If you expect to live in the lap of luxury, or to cook in your room, go somewhere else.

Right in the Center of Virginia Beach

My family recently stayed at The Capes and loved it. It was out first visit to Virignia Beach. The Capes is a smaller hotel but it is right in the center of the beach. Our room looked striaght at the beach and had a nice balcony where we could sit and read our free newspaper and drink coffee while watching the sunrise. Our room was very clean and very nice the microwave and refrigerator was a very nice touch. All the staff was very nice and friendly. They even told me where the local golf driving range was and told me about a excellent seafood restaurant Tau-togs. We did not even have to drive it was only a very short walk away. We will return to The Capes again and will recommend it to our friends and anyone else going to Viriginia Beach.

Loved The Capes

My wife and I visited Virginia Beach for the first time over Memorial Day weekend. Although the weather was not sunny everyday our stay was wonderful at the Capes. We had a king jacuzzi suite and due to the weather we rarely left the room. The room was very spacious the the jacuzzi made our stay so much more romantic. Everyone there including our housekeeping was terrific. I will definately be traveling back to Vriginia Beach and staying at the Capes again soon.

Not very good.

My wife & I visit VAB several times each year over the last 17 years and have stayed in 14 of the oceanfront hotels. This place ranks in the bottom 3. The parking, location, and view were very good and, though the place is obviously old, it was mostly well maintained. However, there were a few major flaws. They actually ran out of clean towels, a major flaw for a beach hotel. They took our dirty towels in the morning and we didn't get any replacements until 4:30 P.M. When we did get towels, we didn't get many, and they were pretty worn out. Secondly, the bath fan was very loud from a bad bearing. But, the worst part of our experience was the nasty disposition of one of the desk clerks, who seemed to be there most often. We have never seen a hotel desk clerk with such an attitude. All the others were very nice. There are much better hotels in the same price range.

Top Local Tips for Virginia Beach

Mahi Mah's The restaurant is awesome but expect to pay about $25-30 per person not counting alcohol.

Off season rates Stay at the beach in April. It's not as busier and the rates are great!

Things to do at night Every night (during the summer) they block off streets and you can walk around and there is all kinds of entertainment. Also they do fireworks some nights too.
