Great time and very helpful staff

from ugo4gold
Needed some time away and my friends and I looked for a quick get away. We went to Va beach with no rerservations and took first rooms available. I walked into lobby and was immediately greated by very friendly and helpful staff. They gave me all options and explained ammenities to me in great detail. I was just looking for a place and their attitudes and customer service sold me on the Surfside. A suite was available and due to the friendly nature of the staff I was sold. The room was big enough to not be cramped. It was clean and the bed and pillows were so comfortable, I felt I was at home. We were centrally located to everything. Some suggetions for the suites would be to add eating utensils , drinking glasses and plates for the suites. However, it did not make any dif to us because the staff made up for anything detail we may have asked for. We had not been to the beach in a long time and the staff gave us all kind of ideas to make our stay restful and fun. The girls and guys went out of their way to locate restaurants and clubs for us to enjoy. I craved for soft shell crab sandwiches and they found a restaurant that just had some left. It was a great 3 days and will return.

Liked Surfside Inn , Rooms were clean and comfortable

I thought the Surfside Inn was nice for a last moment mini vacation. I think they should allow you to stay and pay for only one night instead of two nights. I only wanted to stay one night but paid for two. But it was a nice experience and a great view of the beach.

Best Hotel Ever!!!!

My family decided to stay at the Beach and act like tourist. We all needed a vacation. When we arrived at the Surfside Inn we were very impressed with the lobby. But not near as impressed as with our room. It was spotless. It had everything. I have never stayed at a hotel that a TV, safe, DVD player, refrigerator, microwave, iron and ironing board, clock radio, and a hair dryer. We were given a complimentary continental breakfast. I expected doughnuts. I got assorted bagels, various flavored muffins, fresh fruit, assorted cereals, assorted danishes, and even juices. The personnel was so friendly that we never passed one of them that we were not greeted. For a two star hotel, it cannot be beat. I would rather stay here than at a costly three star. Oh, and I meet the Sales Director and I found her to be very professional and very charming.

Incompetent and to make matters worse, dishonest.

A friend invited me to come golf in VA Beach with him and stay in a free room he had reserved at the Surfside Inn. I arrived late Saturday night and went to the hotel. The night clerk told me there was no one staying in the hotel under my friend's name. I asked him to double check as I was sure I had the right hotel. The clerk looked at his computer again and confirmed my friend was not in the hotel. He was very nice and tried to be helpful, but insisted there was no one under his name at the hotel.

Assuming my friend had made the error and unable to contact him, I checked every hotel in the area and finally had no choice but to book another hotel and pay nearly $150 for the room.
The next day when we met at the golf course, I found out the clerk had made the mistake and there were in fact 8 rooms under his name (one of which remained empty that night) and they WERE staying at the Surfside. Amazingly, the same thing had happened to another member of our group. The clerk had told him that our group (ALL BOOKED UNDER THE SAME NAME WE HAD GIVEN THEM NUMEROUS TIMES) was not in their hotel!!

I returned to the hotel and spoke to a Manager about the error and he assured me they would fix the problem and reimburse me once he spoke to his boss. I understood a mistake had been made. The clerk didn't do it on purpose, he just didn't know what he was doing. The Manager even informed me they knew something was wrong when one room was unoccupied (the maid has informed the fromt desk about this) and they assumed they had issued the same room to two guests. He told me to call the next day and they would straighten the whole thing out and reimburse us for the cost of the room.

The next day I spoke to Jan Williamson ( Sales Director) who told me she would need to review the video from the previous night to be sure I was in fact in their lobby. She called me an hour and told me that despite having seen me on videotape in their lobby talking to the night Manager for 20 minutes, she would not refund the cost of the room. She claimed I looked confused and that she could not hear me ask for my friend on the audio. She was the most arrogant, unprofessional, deceitful person I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with. I could not believe that after watching a tape of me in her lobby the previous night speaking to their employee she was putting the blame squarely on me and refusing to do anything.

I am a former Food and Beverage Director for Hilton and have a lot of hotel experience. I was very surprised this woman had the nerve to tell me they were not going to do anything.

It was such a simple mistake. I walked in and asked the clerk, "Is there a John Smith (I changed the name obviously) staying here tonight?" He said no. I said can you check again to be sure, I know he is staying here. Again, he looked at his computer and said no, he's not here. Even though this was all on video, this Sales Manager was refusing to admit the error or rectify it in any way. I just could not fathom how a Manager was taking a simple mistake made by one of her employees and not just refusing to rectify it, but absolutely refusing to accept responsibility for it whatsoever. I was speechless. I had never (and still haven't) experienced poorer service anywhere ever!

Needless to say I wasn't going to just walk away. My friend and I contacted the golf travel agent he booked the trip through and after explaining the mistake to them we were able to get the cost of the room refunded. I never heard from anyone at the hotel again and never received so much as an apology from them. But, we got our money back. What we can't get back is our time and aggravation. And what I cannot overlook is this woman's handling of the issue. In short, whatever you do don't stay at the Surfside Inn. The people working there are incompetent and the Management has no idea what service is, and what's worse, they were just plain dishonest.

Management Response from sales_manager
In response to Mike's critic I would like to make a few things clear. First of all, the room was not free or we wouldn't be having this problem. Mike did not stay with us that night so I am not sure how he was able to rate the value, rooms, and cleanliness.

Futhermore, according to the desk clerk Mike could not remember which of his friend's name the resevation was under and Mike was not even sure if he had the correct hotel. The clerk said that he gave him a lot of names but never the correct name. The hotel was full and the room was held all night. The next day when we found out what had happened we questioned one of his friends. They too agreed he was confused about his reservation. Upon speaking with Mike I told him that I would review the tape from the night before but that all indications lead us to believe that Mike was at fault and the money would not be returned. The golf agent has nothing to do with the hotel charging a guest or not. But either way I am not sure if they were contacted. It wouldn't matter one way or another if they had been.

What really happened is that the guest whose name all the reservations were under called me. While talking to him I asked him if he honestly believed that Mike had given the correct name. He said that he totally believed him. After speaking with him I believed Mike was due the benefit of a doubt. I did not charge him for the room. Mike, that is what really happened. Check with Chris.

Accommodated over 220 of us!

The Surfside is generally a basic hotel will all rooms being oceanfront. There aren't a whole lot of extras with the rooms, but there are DVD players, irons/ironing boards in each room as well as a nice balcony for two adults - more than two would be tight. I was one of the Band Directors on a trip to Va.Beach and we had over 220 students and adults. Surfside had no problem catering to our needs - both in terms of the rooms and the food. Mark, who also runs FishBones (the restaurant attached), is super and made sure we were satisfied with everything related to food. While I'm sure there were some people who weren't happy, we didn't hear about any real problems with the it at all.
The end of March/early April is a DEAD time of year for VaBe, but the weather was nice, the staff was VERY helpful and I would certainly consider staying there with my family sometime. It was a great time and made very easy. The only snafu was that the other director and I were caught in a stopped elevator for 15-20 minutes ... but Mr. Vee called the next day to apologize and make sure we were happy with things, something he didn't have to do.

No heat in room

from A TripAdvisor Member
MY husband, 5 year old twins and I came for a karate event. The first night when we called to the front desk and complained about the heat, they stated that it was a plumbing problem and that it would be fixed within a few hours. That hour never came. We had to sleep in our clothes to stay warm. The second night when the front desk was called, they stated that there was no problem with the heat. (Room 501) I would never stay at this hotel, again, ever!

Very nice!

Took a family vacation to Virginia Beach and stayed at the Surfside Inn. Hotel is not flashy, but all rooms are oceanfront and the room was exceptionally clean. Staff was helpful and friendly. The only con was the slow elevators. We took the steps most of the time.

Plenty of shopping and restaurants nearby, all within walking distance.

We ate breakfast at Fishbone's (the hotel's onsite restaurant) a couple of mornings and the food was very good.

We had a very positive experience at Surfside and would definitely book there again.

Stayed here often, recommend!

We had to move to this hotel, from a one night stay elsewhere.
We had stayed here before, last time in 2002. so we knew we would like it.
We had two rooms, our son & his family were next to us. Clean rooms, friendly staff. We ate breakfast there three mornings, rented bikes & shopped.
Yes, the elevator was still working about half & you could go through the ballroom. If you parked on the 3rd floor, you had to go up one more to your rooms on the 4th. A little inconvenient & hot.
Our room needed to be cooler, maintenance tried to fix it & they brought a fan quickly. Microwave, refrigerator, alarm clock, nice balcony, but No coffee pot! Ironing board & hair dryer too.
The pool was being cleaned, never got in it. Our son & his family did once, then another day they were aloud to go to a neighboring motel to swim, since ours was closed. They had a baby & it was hot on the beach. A little inconvenient & they took some off of our stay with returning % off on our next visit.
We will probably stay their again, prompt service. We Love Virginia Beach & we go almost every summer. I have noticed over the last 20 years how it is becoming dirty & run down in areas. They are redoing the motels & the Beach has nice walks redone. Just like everything else, prices are a little too high & this ruins the fun for the average family. When you pay high prices you want to enjoy your time & your not doing all the work, at least this motel has tower parking on the premises!

My two cents...

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at Surfside in June 2004 along with friends of ours ... We never had a problem as stated by a few "TripAdvisor Members"....It was our first time to VB and in my search for hotels at the time, I found Surfside to not only be reasonably priced , but their employees friendly, helpful, and patient with my numerous phone calls and questions. They were located close to everything we needed: clubs, restaurants, stores, and pretty much all entertainment. The rooms were clean, along with the hallways...the view was wonderful, and personally, I had no problem with the hotel or it's employees...We're now going back to VB on July 20, 2005 with the same friends as last year, and we're staying at the Surfside AGAIN...
For all those that complained and are use to the "king/queen" treatment ...maybe they should have concentrated on looking for 5 star hotels to begin with , with an oceanfront view of the beach/boardwalk, at a rate of $200.00 and higher per night instead of "lowering their standards"...
Of course every hotel has its quirks...Everyone has their opinions :) ...and their own experiences and you surely can't please everyone...My experience just happened to be good...so I'm returning.
I'm looking forward to next week...and looking over the balcony doing my people watching and smelling that ocean air...
Hopefully the weather will cooperate, so I won't have to be one of those "moaner & groaner" people...Is there a "weather" complaint department?

Top Local Tips for Virginia Beach

Traveling into Virginia Beach The Norfolk airport is very convenient to Virgina Beach. Also, my daughter-in-law and two grandsons met me at the beach by way of the metro from New Jersey that arrived in Newport News. This also was convenient transportation.

good selecton of resturants eat early

Not Like Florida or the Gulf Coast Overall we had a good trip to Virginia Beach. However, this is a different atmosphere than the more laid back Florida/Gulf Coast area. I would say Virginia Beach is more Atlantic City like, with a very busy boardwalk and a very active main street (Atlantic Avenue). Not the greatest for small children!!
