Great time and very helpful staff
from ugo4goldLiked Surfside Inn , Rooms were clean and comfortable
from beachlover1112Best Hotel Ever!!!!
from truxIncompetent and to make matters worse, dishonest.
from mikelauAssuming my friend had made the error and unable to contact him, I checked every hotel in the area and finally had no choice but to book another hotel and pay nearly $150 for the room.
The next day when we met at the golf course, I found out the clerk had made the mistake and there were in fact 8 rooms under his name (one of which remained empty that night) and they WERE staying at the Surfside. Amazingly, the same thing had happened to another member of our group. The clerk had told him that our group (ALL BOOKED UNDER THE SAME NAME WE HAD GIVEN THEM NUMEROUS TIMES) was not in their hotel!!
I returned to the hotel and spoke to a Manager about the error and he assured me they would fix the problem and reimburse me once he spoke to his boss. I understood a mistake had been made. The clerk didn't do it on purpose, he just didn't know what he was doing. The Manager even informed me they knew something was wrong when one room was unoccupied (the maid has informed the fromt desk about this) and they assumed they had issued the same room to two guests. He told me to call the next day and they would straighten the whole thing out and reimburse us for the cost of the room.
The next day I spoke to Jan Williamson ( Sales Director) who told me she would need to review the video from the previous night to be sure I was in fact in their lobby. She called me an hour and told me that despite having seen me on videotape in their lobby talking to the night Manager for 20 minutes, she would not refund the cost of the room. She claimed I looked confused and that she could not hear me ask for my friend on the audio. She was the most arrogant, unprofessional, deceitful person I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with. I could not believe that after watching a tape of me in her lobby the previous night speaking to their employee she was putting the blame squarely on me and refusing to do anything.
I am a former Food and Beverage Director for Hilton and have a lot of hotel experience. I was very surprised this woman had the nerve to tell me they were not going to do anything.
It was such a simple mistake. I walked in and asked the clerk, "Is there a John Smith (I changed the name obviously) staying here tonight?" He said no. I said can you check again to be sure, I know he is staying here. Again, he looked at his computer and said no, he's not here. Even though this was all on video, this Sales Manager was refusing to admit the error or rectify it in any way. I just could not fathom how a Manager was taking a simple mistake made by one of her employees and not just refusing to rectify it, but absolutely refusing to accept responsibility for it whatsoever. I was speechless. I had never (and still haven't) experienced poorer service anywhere ever!
Needless to say I wasn't going to just walk away. My friend and I contacted the golf travel agent he booked the trip through and after explaining the mistake to them we were able to get the cost of the room refunded. I never heard from anyone at the hotel again and never received so much as an apology from them. But, we got our money back. What we can't get back is our time and aggravation. And what I cannot overlook is this woman's handling of the issue. In short, whatever you do don't stay at the Surfside Inn. The people working there are incompetent and the Management has no idea what service is, and what's worse, they were just plain dishonest.
Mike
Futhermore, according to the desk clerk Mike could not remember which of his friend's name the resevation was under and Mike was not even sure if he had the correct hotel. The clerk said that he gave him a lot of names but never the correct name. The hotel was full and the room was held all night. The next day when we found out what had happened we questioned one of his friends. They too agreed he was confused about his reservation. Upon speaking with Mike I told him that I would review the tape from the night before but that all indications lead us to believe that Mike was at fault and the money would not be returned. The golf agent has nothing to do with the hotel charging a guest or not. But either way I am not sure if they were contacted. It wouldn't matter one way or another if they had been.
What really happened is that the guest whose name all the reservations were under called me. While talking to him I asked him if he honestly believed that Mike had given the correct name. He said that he totally believed him. After speaking with him I believed Mike was due the benefit of a doubt. I did not charge him for the room. Mike, that is what really happened. Check with Chris.
Accommodated over 220 of us!
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe end of March/early April is a DEAD time of year for VaBe, but the weather was nice, the staff was VERY helpful and I would certainly consider staying there with my family sometime. It was a great time and made very easy. The only snafu was that the other director and I were caught in a stopped elevator for 15-20 minutes ... but Mr. Vee called the next day to apologize and make sure we were happy with things, something he didn't have to do.
No heat in room
from A TripAdvisor MemberVery nice!
from Buck47Plenty of shopping and restaurants nearby, all within walking distance.
We ate breakfast at Fishbone's (the hotel's onsite restaurant) a couple of mornings and the food was very good.
We had a very positive experience at Surfside and would definitely book there again.
great
from A TripAdvisor MemberStayed here often, recommend!
from OhioCherWe had stayed here before, last time in 2002. so we knew we would like it.
We had two rooms, our son & his family were next to us. Clean rooms, friendly staff. We ate breakfast there three mornings, rented bikes & shopped.
Yes, the elevator was still working about half & you could go through the ballroom. If you parked on the 3rd floor, you had to go up one more to your rooms on the 4th. A little inconvenient & hot.
Our room needed to be cooler, maintenance tried to fix it & they brought a fan quickly. Microwave, refrigerator, alarm clock, nice balcony, but No coffee pot! Ironing board & hair dryer too.
The pool was being cleaned, never got in it. Our son & his family did once, then another day they were aloud to go to a neighboring motel to swim, since ours was closed. They had a baby & it was hot on the beach. A little inconvenient & they took some off of our stay with returning % off on our next visit.
We will probably stay their again, prompt service. We Love Virginia Beach & we go almost every summer. I have noticed over the last 20 years how it is becoming dirty & run down in areas. They are redoing the motels & the Beach has nice walks redone. Just like everything else, prices are a little too high & this ruins the fun for the average family. When you pay high prices you want to enjoy your time & your not doing all the work, at least this motel has tower parking on the premises!
My two cents...
from A TripAdvisor MemberFor all those that complained and are use to the "king/queen" treatment ...maybe they should have concentrated on looking for 5 star hotels to begin with , with an oceanfront view of the beach/boardwalk, at a rate of $200.00 and higher per night instead of "lowering their standards"...
Of course every hotel has its quirks...Everyone has their opinions :) ...and their own experiences and you surely can't please everyone...My experience just happened to be good...so I'm returning.
I'm looking forward to next week...and looking over the balcony doing my people watching and smelling that ocean air...
Hopefully the weather will cooperate, so I won't have to be one of those "moaner & groaner" people...Is there a "weather" complaint department?

Top Local Tips for Virginia Beach
Traveling into Virginia Beach The Norfolk airport is very convenient to Virgina Beach. Also, my daughter-in-law and two grandsons met me at the beach by way of the metro from New Jersey that arrived in Newport News. This also was convenient transportation.
good selecton of resturants eat early
Not Like Florida or the Gulf Coast Overall we had a good trip to Virginia Beach. However, this is a different atmosphere than the more laid back Florida/Gulf Coast area. I would say Virginia Beach is more Atlantic City like, with a very busy boardwalk and a very active main street (Atlantic Avenue). Not the greatest for small children!!
