Great Spot!

from A TripAdvisor Member
We were there August 5-9, 2004. This was not my first time staying at the Sandcastle. It is in a great location, you are close to everything and also on the busy end of town which is great. I always take my mom with me and she can't walk long distances. Staying here she can go down for dinner, shop, walk a short distance to the bench in front of the Hotel, or sit on the balcony and people watch. This year there was new carpeting and a marble top sink which looked great. The continental breakfast area truly needed more than the two toasters. That room got very crowded. I faxed in my reservation and there was a lot of confusion prior to my arrival but when I got there it was straight and everything went well. Several of my sisters and brothers are also staying at Sandcastle same time and we have a wonderful time. We only request to be on the same floor and have our rooms together if at all possible. We've been doing this for about eight years. We love getting the 10% return guest discount and look forward to visiting Sandcastle again next year but we hope to stay a least seven days. I would truly recommend Sandcastle to my friends!

very nice- would stay again

We stayed at the hotel August 4-8. I thought the hotel was very nice. The room was kept clean, workers were very friendly and helpful and the continental breakfast was very nice- although at times go very crowded. The pool, however, was very small but also kept clean. The location of the hotel is very nice- alot of action around. I was worried about the hotel being right by the fishing pier for fear of smelling like fish- this did not happen. I would definitely stay at the hotel again.

Great Location, beautiful beach!!

My boyfriend and I just returned from a 5 night stay (August 1-August 6) in a oceanfront room with a king bed. The hotel itself was easy to find, right along Atlantic Avenue on 14th street beside the fishing pier. Our check-in was smooth, the front desk personnel were extremely polite and helpful. Our room had been smoking, (it was all that was available) but they deodorized the room and we could not detect the scent. The ocenfront view with balcony and chairs & table were great--we ate lunch on the balcony a couple of times.

The hotel breakfast was a tad skimpy--mostly the basics like cereal, milk, breakfast breads, juices and a couple of fruit selections--but then again it was free and saved us $$!! It was also nice having the microwave and fridge--we came back from the beach and ate lunch in the room everyday. They also offer free lemonade, raspberry lemonade and coffee in the lobby 24 hours a day. Also we got a free daily local newspaper.

The hotel is in close proximity to tons of shops and restaurants--not to mention the Boardwalk which we loved. The boardwalk is right behind the hotel, all you have to do is go outside. The hotel gift shop and food mart were conveinient and reasonably priced--we bought several shirts there and my boyfriend got a pair of shorts for $16.

The hotel elevator was extremely smelly from all the beach funk--the last day we were there they changed the carpet in them. The bathrooms were very tiny and the sink was awkwardly placed behind the bathroom door, other than that we did not have many complaints. It was very pleasant. We did not get the chance to sample the restaurants at the hotel though. But Abbey Road and Dirty Dick's were very good.

We would definitely return, although we did not receive a discount coupon for a return stay, I need to call and check on that. We would recommend this hotel to anyone and make sure to ask about AAA rates and other discounts. We saved over $30 per night. Also, the Virginia Science and Marine Museum offers a great 2 hour dolphin tour for $24, it was great!!! We saw tons of dolphins.

Subpar in overall quality. Bathroom very small but nice tile and granite sinktop--fine for a couple but a bit tiny for even a small family. Balcony railing broken and not fixed during our 4-day stay, despite my report to front desk on first day after checking into our room (isn't that a lawsuit waiting to happen?). Otherwise, very convenient location next to amusement park and fishing pier with convenience store, beach shop and two restaurants on ground floor of complex. Indoor pool with small baby pool (converted from hot tub) small but very large outdoor terraced patios with nice view of Atlantic Avenue. Maid service good. Front desk personnel polite.

Loved the Sandcastle

Just returned from our vacation! First time at Virginia Beach. Called a few days before spur of the moment decision to go and was lucky to get a room here. View was magnificent!!!! Room was clean and maids did a GREAT JOB of cleaning what some mornings looked like a hurricane came through..lol Continental breakfast was AWESOME!! Gift shops here and small grocery store really came in handy. Strawberry Daquaris at the outdoor patio were out of this world. Looking forward to returning next year and with the 10% discount i received at check-out makes it twice as nice.....Would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a nice family hotel...

stayed at better

I stayed at the sandcastle recently and i have stayed at better hotels than that. the rooms were smaller than my closet and the pillows were like bricks. The food in the restauraunt was terrible and not even cooked. The location is in the perfect part of virginia beach though. I would say only stay there if you have a small family.

What a bang for your buck - Great Family Vacation spot!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
With four kids and two adults, we do alot of searching and researching before booking a hotel. We booked a kitchenette room with sink, kitchen cabinets, microwave and refrigerator which allowed us to save $$ by running up to the room from the beach to have lunch and late night snacks. It had two double beds and sofa bed. The room was very roomy and our bathroom had a double sink tub.shower that was very large. The sandcastle offers family vacation packages rather than booking straight per person room rates which was a great savings! Our room was ocean front we requested a room in the mid level so not to be so high couldnt comfortably see everything going on from the balcony and so we were not right on the boardwalk---they met all of our needs. The staff when making reservations were extrmely helpful and informative about area attractions and the costs of renting bikes etc. The hotel is a short walk from EVERYTHING! The fishing pier, boardwalk right outside the door with the ocean. Within the hotel they have two restaurants one casual and the other with a partio right off the boardwalk -- something on the menu for everyone from burgers for 5.00 to seafood dinners Food and prices were AWESOME. Upon checking out they give you a coupon for 10% off on your next stay - we are definately making this our return hotel when staying in Virginia Beach. Bike rentals are right dowstairs...2 hours for $20.00 bike for four or individual single bikes 5.00 an hour. Highly recomend for evening or sunset--all the boarwalk bands are playing and the hotels and boardwalk lit up nicely.

This is a great hotel for families or couples you get alot of bang for your buck without compromising any amenities.

I agree, coffee makers in the room would be ideal and postage machine in lobby. You cant get postage anywhere except the post office...that was inconvenient. Soda chips etc in the convenience store were amazingly reasonably pricedas well the gifts and souveniers in the gift shop.

We are definately going back both with and without the kids!!!

Our truck barely fit under the roof of the parking garage...so big SUVS or truck with roof lights beware.

Tiny Rooms

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at Sandcastle June 2004. The rooms were fairly clean but very small. We ordered a cot but had to send it back because there was no place to put it. The bathroom is also very small and the bathroom door opens right by the sink. Beware if your standing at the sink when someone comes out of bathroom. I had one of my toes broken and lost a toenail, thankfully it was on our lastnight.

The staff at the front desk were very nice and helpful. the housekeeping staff were very nice and efficient also.

Great Place-Ready To Go Back!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Just got back and had a great time. Yes the bathrooms and beds are small but the view and the location of the hotel (directly at the 14th Street pier) more than makes up for it. The only thing worth complaining about is the coffee-the worst anywhere! There are no coffee pots in the rooms (can this be fixed?) so you have to go to the lobby to get your own. Since no one wants others to see them when they first wake up, you have to "clean up" before going down the elevator. Staff very friendly and helpful. Nice small convenience store on first floor with decent prices (a rarity in Va. Beach) that comes in handy if staying more than one day. For the money this would be a hard place to beat.

Overall Nice Stay... but

from newbbrn
This hotel is older, as many are in VaBeach, however it was well maintained. It was clean and updated. However, it just wasn't worth the price to me. The rooms are TINY and the bathrooms are VERY small. You couldn't even put your stuff on the bathroom counter. They did a good job with what they had. They had no extra pillows or blankets available, which seems silly. The beds were comfy and the shower warm. There was a fridge and microwave. They gave us an oceanview room even though we paid for an oceanfront room 4 months earlier. That made me mad, even though we are getting the difference back. The breakfast was pretty nice: bagels, muffins, cereal, coffee, juice, fruit. And beach access was easy. There are shops right in the hotel. And we parked on the same level as we stayed so it was easy to unload onto that floor. The worst part was that they were doing repairs/renovations and they started banging LOUDLY at 8am. That is RUDE when people are on vacation at the beach and want to sleep in. SO - a mixed review... I've seen much better, but it wasn't bad.

Top Local Tips for Virginia Beach

never again Toilet stopped working within an hour of being there. Hotel had us wait all day until night said maintenance was coming and then said there was no maintenance that day . Finally they had us move to another room and in that room nothing was plugged in and working I had to plug everything in. bathroom had hair all over floor and pool was discolored. Only thing that was good was the view!!

Look before you eat! All buttets are not the same. There are good and bad. Take a look before sitting down.

Coupon books... Use them! Nickel and dime saving but worth it if your a shopper!
