Check in was very unpleasant. We were HHonors Diamond members and were told by the Front Desk supervisor that we weren't entitled to use the Concierge Lounge because that was for "Select Leisure Members" (no definition offered).. Her customer relations skills were totally lacking. When we reached our room, the card key didn't work and we had to return to the lobby after it was activated. There was pink mold in the shower and after 3 requests for a shower cap, I gave up. On the second day we asked the housekeeper to make up our room early and she snapped back, "I have a lot of rooms". A request to the housekeeping supervisor was equally unproductive. Since there is a seafood restaurant in the lobby, the entire hotel constantly smells of fish cooking. There is a loud booming music playing in the pool area and that is hardly conductive to a restful interlude. Although the hotel is oceanfront, there is no access to beach towels and there were only 2 towels in the room. Checkout, the room key had been deactivated and it caused problems and it caused problems exiting from the garage across the street. This was a very disspointing experience for a $220+ tax per night room.

There were a few minor problems like at the check in desk we were told the check in time was 4:00 not 3:00 as printed on their website and forms in the room. Overall the rooom and hotel and very upscale and we're planning on going back next year. Other reviews site problems with long waits for elevator and valet. We never had to wait. One review said breakfast ended at 10:00; when we went in Sept. in ended at 11:00.

This hotel is definitely a cut above the competition in the beach area. I found my two night stay to be top notch with an upgrade to the Club Floor when my regular room was not quite ready by 3pm. The check in staff could not have been more accomodating, nor could the housekeeping or bell staff

The room is large with a great bed, 42" plasma TV in room and smaller LCD in bathroom. Double headed shower.

Beach is at doorsteo and a large public park next door is just off the outside Catch31 restaurant which has three fire pits roaring at night so you can have dessert under the stars.

The inifinity roof top pool is cool but the views are awesome. It is a bit small but good to cool off in. The indoor pool is quite warm but also on the small side, the only criticism I have.

All in all, you can't do better than a stay here.

After having dined on the cheap several nights, we decided to splurge for our wedding anniversary at the Catch 31 Restaurant at the Ocean Front Hilton Inn. We were told there would be about a 30 minute wait for a table, so, after having left our name, we adjourned to the bar to wait. One and a half hours later, the pager given to us by the hostess went off. The hostess did apologize for the delay, but then proceeded to take us to a table IN THE BAR. I'm sorry, but after having sat this long waiting, this was unacceptable. We sat there for a moment fuming and then left without a word. Our 1+ hour in the bar had given us a pretty good opportunity to observe the workings of this place. They had about 5 bartenders standing around and (I believe) one beleaguered cocktail waitress to check on customers. Assuming that the restaurant was as efficient as the bar, we wanted no part of it. We walked down the boardwalk to another hotel and dined, without so much as a minute's wait, at their restaurant, "Ellington's." The waitress was extremely nice and the food was great. I'll never know, but I'll bet the total bill was maybe 75% of what it would have been at Catch 31. I guess I should thank them for their ineptitude---it probably saved me enough to buy breakfast the next day!

Nice hotel, needs better service

My wife and I were attending a family reunion in Virginia Beach, and saw this as a great opportunity to try out the new Hilton, using some HH points. Overall, this is a very nice hotel, tastfully decorated, and everything still has the newness to it. Our room was very nice, with an southern view of the beach. Our shower was a standup, not a regular tub. I did like the big widescreen HDTV in the room. The grounds were nice, with easy access to the beach and boardwalk. The elevators were VERY slow. It seems they should add another. Also, I was disappointed that there was not a sundry store. We had to walk 2 blocks to a drug store for a few items.

The big dissappointment is that the customer service could use some renovations. Not one person, save a server in the Catch31 restaurant, was smiling and personable. Everyone seemed to dislike their jobs. Our check in was very slow. We had arrived around 3pm, and was told our room was not ready, to come back a little later. So we checked in our luggage with the bellman, and headed off to the bar to wait for our room. We returned to check in at 4:30pm, and waited 20 minutes in line, then I had to wait another 20 minutes to get a bellman to retrieve our luggage. There were not enough people working either the check-in counter or bellman counter. From there the service did not improve.

For example, I was told the breakfast buffet was open until 11am. We get there at 10:40, and was told we would have to order off the menu, that the buffet was closed. Since I was using a HH certificate, I was told it would not cover any menu items, just the buffet. So we had to rush up to get the food before it was taken away. The breakfast buffet had a limited offering. No waffles or pancakes, nor any made to order omlets. What they did have was fairly tasty.

Overall, I would not spend the money required to stay at this Hilton, unless they are able to bring the customer service up to standards.

Beautiful Room

We stayed for two nights in April when the hotel had been open for only a few weeks and before the summer season started. The room (corner king) was gorgeous, loved the colors and fixtures, incredibly comfy bed, and with the windows and sliding doors you could lie in bed in the morning and see an expansive view of the ocean from two sides of the room - lovely!! That was the best part of the stay and worth the money! the one negative - the air conditioning is Loud!

Bathroom: fixtures were beatiful, althought the bathroom was a bit small. Shower is big and gorgeous but I missed having a tub and the only place to hang anything - wet suits or dry towels- is on one rack in the back of the enclosed shower - not a good setup.

The pool is cool to look at (infinity edge pool on the roof) but so small it is almost non functional - and way too cold to swim in April, wish it was heated! The indoor pool is also small and shallow. It is very windy on the rooftop at times. We didn't have kids with us, but not a good set up for kids unless they are quite young..

Our stay was for R&R. The beauty of the room, the view, and the lovely decor of the hotel and good service made it worth it to us, but I wouldn't say this is a great place for families with active school age children.

OK but there are some issues

My family, including 3 kids ages 10, 8 and 6, recently stayed at the Hilton for a weekend. We're frequent visitors to Va Beach and usually stay elsewhere but business landed us at the Hilton. We found the hotel to be very nice but not especially family friendly. The area to pull in and load or unload your luggage is very small and often jammed with vehicles. The alternative, which we employed, was to park at the garage across the street (guests can park for free there) and lug our bags to the hotel ourselves. The check-in process was smooth and the room was nice with a small balcony--room for about 3 people to stand comfortably. No vent in the bathroom and a noisy air conditioner were about the only minor issues with the room. TV channels were more limited than we've had at other hotels. The pools on the roof are small and can be cold. Children aren't allowed to swim in the outdoor pool after 6 pm and are moved inside at that hour. This creates quite a crowded indoor pool from 6 pm until closing at 10. The outdoor pool and hot tub are also part of the Sky Bar so those who don't like swimming in the middle of a restaurant/bar may be a bit uncomfortable there. The only other glaring oversite was the only exit to go to the beach cuts through the main lobby and past the Catch 31 restaurant. Very odd layout here and no place outside to shower off after going to the beach. I feel sorry for the crew responsible for keeping the lobby clean and free of sand--an endless job. Also, no refrigerators or microwaves in the rooms which can be vital if you have kids. Overall, our stay was pleasant but there are more family-friendly, economical locations in VA Beach that we'll stay at in the future.

Post-Deployment Gift to Wife (and myself)

After 6 months overseas, I was ready for a break and wanted to treat my wife to some time away from the kids. While on deployment I learned that the new Hilton would open prior to our return, so, I made a reservation for a Club Level room. A bit more pricy, but, worth it. Service at check-in was perfect. Elevators were slowwww, but, I didn't care----you have to laugh those things off. The room was a corner ocean view, and was perfect----from the VIEW to the 60" LCD TV----everything in the room was perfect. I personally thought the 15" LCD TV in the bathroom (along with a phone) was hilarious. The bed is all Hilton. On the 20th floor we participated in everything they offered. We had a Wine/Cheese tasting hour from 6-7pm, then, mingled with some other hotel guests in the 20th floor lounge. Then, dinner at Catch 31. Now, I've read the other reviews on the poor service---and, we experienced NONE of that. We both were very patient and accomodating of the "newness" of the restaraunt, as well as the personnel....but, they all did fine. We also were treated to a fine desert wine that my wife had requested upon being suggested by the sommelier....there was a very very slight delay in the delivery of the wine (while it was being chilled), and, the sommelier did not charge us for the "pricy" wine...which was very nice of him---but, I wasn't even going to complain....but, that topped off a fine meal and perfect stay at the Hilton. Also, I agree that this property is NOT kid-friendly----that is why I picked it as a GET-AWAY! To get-away from the kids. It focuses it's attention towards business and couples.

Just returned from a stay at this hilton. It is a beautiful hotel with alot of nice features. However the hotel does not seem to have enough staff to take care of all its guests. The room discritiptions are a little mis-leading. They list every room that has a balcony as having an ocean view this is not true. There also seems to be a problem with the elevators and the amount of guests staying in the hotel. It took for ever to get an elevator on some floors

Overall, our Father's Day weekend stay at the Hilton Virginia Beach Oceanfront was excellent. That said; I am a realist, and expect excellence-not perfection. Despite the fact that we arrived right at the busiest time (4 pm Friday), check-in was a breeze. Our room on the 19th floor, facing south was beautifully appointed and well stocked with toiletries, towlels, coffee, etc. We encountered very courteous service at Sky Bar, Catch 31, Concierge, valet, etc. We used both the rooftop indoor and outdoor pools, and enjoyed them. The hotel is exquisitely decorated. We enjoyed a fabulous Father's Day lunch at an outside table at Catch 31. The food was awesome, plentiful, reasonably priced; and the wait was 10-15 minutes.

We were at the Hilton for 2 nights, June 17th and 18th. The room, corner king, ocean view, beautiful sunrise...was excellent. The hotel service for bags, desks, maid was good. Catch31, the restaurent had terrible service. I think they were having trouble with new summer hires. Although the wait for all meals was very long, the food was actually pretty good.

I just returned from a three-night stay at this hotel. I was extremely pleased when I entered my king room located on the club-level of the hotel. I went for some rest and relaxation and an opportunity to enjoy a spectacular view of the Atlantic, early morning sunrises - with coffee on my balcony, and a quiet room. I paid more to be on the the "club level" of which for some guests, interprets exclusivity and privilege vis a vis upgraded amenities offered to guests staying on the top three floors. I wanted tranquility i.e. no kids running in the halls, loud voices in the corridors, and room doors slamming at all hours.

As far as amenities go, I was checked in at the main lobby - contrary to the separate check in area indicated per in-house reservationist. This was no big deal, as check-in was swift and polite. My only suggestion here would be to have had more of an orientation to the hotel. For this, I turned to the guest services book in my room.

My favorite things about the VA Beach Hilton Oceanfront were: the view, a chaise lounge on my balcony, the complimentary continental breakfast in the "club" lounge on the 20th floor, the luxurious linens and thirsty towels, the oh-so-comfortable king size bed, and Starbucks inroom coffee. Oh yes, the fireworks display too, was a nice touch on the eve prior to my departure. As far mechanical issues within the room, the air conditioner was noisy - and it got quite cold in the room - but it worked! Yet, when adjusting the temperature to warm things up a bit, the room became stuffy. The ceiling fan helped for air circulation. The horizon pool up top was really pretty and the view was great.

Hotel staff was very pleasant and professional. Housekeeping responded to my requests for additional coffee and creamer to be left in the room. Which I find that anywhere you stay and/or dine while on vacation, simple kindness and respect towards the staff gets the traveler much farther than a haughty attitude of entitlement.

I dined at other (favorite) restaurants on Atlantic, so did not try the food service other than the continental breakfast - of which there was plenty to choose from.

Something rather excessive in my particular room were the small color TV set mounted on the bathroom wall and the telephone installed on the wall next to the toilet. What the bathroom really needed was better ventilation since there was no ventilation fan - seems as though engineering and design priorities were a bit misguided.

Indeed I would stay here again, no qualms at having the same floor and same room. I hope that the newness and comfort levels can withstand the heavy tourist volume enough so that it won't all too soon show signs of wear and tear as so many of the beachfront hotels do on the resort strip.

Bring Your Rollerblades! Bring your rollerblades! The boardwalk on Virginia Beach is the best for rollerblading! The boardwalk is smooth, paved and flat. It is never too crowded for rollerblading on this boardwalk.
