Pet Friendly but Shabby

We selected the hotel because it allowed pets. The staff was friendly (even for it being Christmas Eve) but the floors & walls of our hallway were destroyed. The room needed updating. I confess that being 1) a beach hotel and 2) pet friendly, it didn't surprise me about the state of the room.

This will be the third year visiting the Doubletree Hotel in Virginia Beach. My daughter is in a dance competition at the convention center next door each year in July and we have always been extremely happy with the quality of service at the hotel. The rooms are of high quality and the cleanliness has always been impeccable each and every time in three years!!!!! We would recommend this hotel and will be returning again next year.

Pleasant accomodations

My husband and I took our two well-behaved dogs to this Doubletree on July 8th, 2004. I read the reviews and was skeptical of the hotel. Not only were the cookies at check-in delicious but the room itself was extremely spacious, very clean and nicely decorated. It was not a far trip to the beach, about a 5 minute drive. The staff was very helpful and we enjoyed our stay very much.

s better than you might think

I booked my room through priceline. After reading the reviews I was very worried about the quality of the hotel. I walked in the lobby was very nice as most stated. I checked in with no problem. I got off the elevator on my floor and the smell was terrible. Musty and smokey. I immediately requested a change to a non-smoking floor/room and my request was granted. It made a world of difference. The smell of musk and smoke was replaced with pine and lysol. Rooms were nice and staff very friendly. Further from the beach than I expected but a shuttle left every half hour to take you there. I would return to this hotel again especially at the price I paid.

Have you seen the picture on the web of the beautiful lobby? What you dont see is the rest of the hotel. Pool? Sure. Heated? No. Clean? Definetily not! The pool area itself left alot to be desired. At 9pm on one particular night that we stayed (a 2 night stay) only half of the lights worked, which would be okay in June, however the sky lights seemed to be crusted with something preventing the light to come through. Probably the same crust that adorned the pool rim. On both nights of our stay the ice machine, which was convienently located out side our door, did'nt work. Guest services response when called: Did you try any of the other floors? Sure I did..That one was broken too! But alas I found the lone working ice machine in the 5,6,7 floor area on 7. However not all is okay with that either. It appears to have (not had!) a water leak that created a musky smell that made me happy not to have allergies. If I were blind, I would have had no problems find the 7th floor ice maker because all I would have to do is walk bare footed to it. The water soaked the hallway rug about 5 ft on either side of the vending area indicated it's location. The rooms are in need of a makeover, I would use fire! The rug in one corner of the room looked as though it at one time had crime scene tape corodoning it off. The bath was crusty and looked very unsanitary. The hotel allows dogs to stay, not something that I would expect from a Hilton. The shuttle to the beach was nice and was on time the one day we used it. However save your money and spend on one of the hotel at the beach. Next time I'd stay at $60 hotel on the beach, I would at least expect to get the treatment that I got at the Hilton!

t stay here!

I so regret that I did not check Trip Advisor before I booked a room here. BIG MISTAKE. Upon arrival, was greeted to warm chocolate chip cookies and a very nice hotel lobby - trust me, that's as good as it gets. The room was pitiful. Toilet had "gunk" in it and the drain under the sink had growth too. I kept my shoes on the entire time I was there. Requested extra water glasses and kleenex-never showed. In fact, the three days we were there, the maids never changed our water glasses one time, but we did get kleenex refills. If you want comfort, bring your own toilet paper with you. The concierge obviously works on a commission-BEWARE. He will try to sweet talk you into a free breakfast or lunch for a real deal at a hotel later in the year. Don't buy it - it's Time Share selling. Know that fighter jets fly over all day. One bright note: They offer a free shuttle to the Boardwalk. It runs on time and with the exception of one young driver, the guys running this shuttle were very friendly and helpful.

Turn back while you still can!

First of all, I can't believe they call this hotel a Doubletree; that kindof creates the expectation that you don't have to worry about what kind of place you'll be staying. But I warn you, even if your expectation consists only of having a clean room to stay in, (which it may be, given the party atmophere during a holiday), you will be in for a great dis- apointment. Besides the fact that the wallpaper was falling off the walls all through the hallways, and children and unsupervised teenagers are running up and down the halls and stairs ALL night long(which is not the fault of the hotel, neccessarily.) I was afraid to walk barefoot in our room, mostly because of the terrible urine smell. My mother-in-law had to change rooms twice, due to the fact that when she went to turn on the shower, the knob fell off in her hand, and the shower could not be used,(TWICE!) however, the room change did not improve the smell. This hotel is just dirty, it may be due to the fact that they allow dogs to stay there. After having been to both Gulf Port, MS and New Orleans recently, two places not exactly known for cleanliness, we encountered NOTHING that compares to the level of disgusting we got here.

Not that great

We were looking for a good getaway for a weekend. We stayed at this hotel May 14-16, 2004. The hotel lacked a few simple things like a fan in the bathroom and did have some damage to the hotel room. I.e. chester drawers were broken, hooks fell off the back of the bathroom door. The Pelican Grille restaurant downstairs in the lobby is not worth the price. Food wasn't good. Go find an IHOP. Other than that, friendly staff, warm cookies upon check-in and a great view of the boardwalk without too much congestion. You can get a cheaper rate going through Doubletree's website rather go through Expedia.

Husband and Wife getaway

My wife and I wanted to plan a simple getaway for a long weekend.Upon finding out that most of the major hotels on the broadwalk were booked we accidently fell into the Doubletree. After looking at some of the reviews on line I figured that I had made a hugh mistake. However to our surprise we were meet by a very warm staff and good accommadations.
The room was real nice and the hotel was very quiet, which actually fit us. The price was off the hook!!! Looking for a real inexpensive place to stay, but nice try Doubletree. I would go back.

Nothing good to say about the Doubletree

from A TripAdvisor Member
DO NOT STAY AT THE DOUBLETREE!!!! I had the misfortune of staying at the Doubletree last summer. The room was delapidated, the service was non-existence (I had to hunt down a maid to clean our room--and don't ask for extra towels because they don't have any). There is a slum between the hotel and the beach, my 6' 6" husband was advised by a hotel employee that it is not safe to walk the distance. The small shuttle bus only runs until 9:00 pm, so don't expect to be able to walk along the boardwalk or go out to dinner without a car. The only people who should consider staying here are those who will spend all of their time at the convention center next store and don't need amenities, like ample electrical outlets or a dataport. There is no food service (no room service, no coffee shop, absolutely no food service) between 1:30 and 5:00--better pack a lunch!

Top Local Tips for Virginia Beach

Pacific & Atlantic Ave While we were there we learned that if you drive around on these two streets in summer more than six times in an hour you will get a ticket (town ordinance) and if you use bad language that's a ticket too!! As for parking there are only two public lots and from our understanding in summer it's expensive and then another block to beach. Plus they fill up quickly! Stay off Rte 264 (heavy traffic and congestion) as much as possible try alternative Rt 58 to get to beach. Virgina Beach area feels old and tired and dirty something lost in time needs to be cleaned up.

Great Meal for a good price! Beach Bully Bar B Que is just down the street a couple of blocks past the convention center. The food was great and the service was friendly. My friend and I split one of the combo dinners which easily fed two people and had a great meal. The pork ribs were really good!

look off the beaten path my wife and i had the luxury of having our son and his wife living in V.B and also our daughter living ther so if possible ,get to the locals and find out which beaches they hang out at because ther are many just afew miles away from the craziness of atlantic ave.
