Historical Traveller Reviews of Courtyard Virginia Beach Oceanfront South Hotel
I was the coordinator for a family reunion in Virginia Beach this year. Anyway, I selected the Courtyard Oceanfront South as our hotel. I'm so glad I selected this hotel. First of all when we arrived at the hotel the check-in was quick and effortless. I remember from previous reunions we would be in line forever trying to get our rooms. However, the hotel staff was excellent and made check-in very easy. The hotel is very clean. The rooms, hallways, pool area and everything was really nice. The pool area had plenty of towels available at all times. On the last day the chlorine was a bit strong. Anyway, the entire staff was knowlegeable and friendly. I had so many family members come up to me to tell me how much they loved the hotel. I honestly can't think of one negative experience during our stay.
Family Friendly Hotel with Great Location
Awesome hotel on 25th and Atlantic with ocean view and king suite with a kitchenette. Right next to the entertainment stage and bike rentals on 24th street, walking distance to amusement parks on 14th street, across the street from Ben and Jerry's, a block from local trolley stop, and just a step away from Atlantic Ocean. Hotel perks include complimentary toiletries (shampoo, toothpaste, razor, soap, toothbrush, etc), USA today on weekdays, afternoon cookies and fruit, all day coffee and tea, and inflatable beach toys for kids. Quality of breakfast buffet for under $10 (free for children under 4 yrs old) cannot be beat. Excellent hotel staff. One isolated housekeeping incident prevented us from giving an overall excellent rating.
I just returned from a visit to this Courtyard, and generally enjoyed my stay. The staff is very friendly and pleasant. The hotel is centrally located on the Boardwalk, not far from the pier and many shops and attractions for kids. The room was a nice size, fairly standard for a Courtyard, with a balcony and sweeping view of the ocean. My main complaint was that the windows were quite dirty! The bathroom was cramped - the coffeepot was barely squeezed in, making it difficult to have room to brew a cup in the a.m. I was on the top floor, which made for a great ocean view, but next time I would try to get something on a lower floor - people-watching the passing Boardwalk scene is better there!
Great hotel, very clean and spacious. I was well pleased. Great ocean view as well. The only problem I encountered was that I had requested a smoking room and that is not what we got.
Customer Service Sucks

We cancelled this hotel (a month and a half prior to our scheduled visit) because we booked another that was half the price. Upon returning from our trip, our bank account online, showed two charges for 271.07. When we called they told us only one of the charges should be there for "no show" without cancelling. I told them I cancelled but didn't have the confirmation number on hand. After running to the office for a copy of the cancellation confirmation, I called back and the manager told me he would credit the account but was showing that I cancelled the same day I was to arrive. (Question is, why didn't he tell me that before I ran to the office for the paperwork?) He said he would do me a favor and credit my account. This was their mistake and I have the paperwork to prove it. He didn't do me any favor at all! I am glad we didn't stay at this hotel, with all the trouble!!! It's been two days and we have yet to see that credit!!! What would happen if checks came through and I couldn't cover them because of the hold up of 271? I don't even want to think of that. What ever happened to customer service being a top priority?
Happy with our stay here

Spent three nights at this hotel mid-week, last week of July, 2004. Fifth floor balcony room with great view of the beach and boardwalk was standard, but very clean, and with many amenities. Although I consider $209 a night expensive for two doubles with no continental breakfast, I do realize we were paying for the location of the hotel more than anything. We were withing walking distance of many activities and restaurants, and my family was very happy with the room and the location. Thus, our stay was most enjoyable. Would recommend.
Virginia Beach needs more hotels like this
I took a little trip to Virginia Beach to pick out a hotel before my vacation because I didn't want any surprises when I went on vacation. After having a little tour of the hotel suite I was satisfied and made a reservation. About a month later when I arrived at the hotel for my vacation I was very pleasantly surprised when my suite was even bigger than the suite I was shown when I came to see the hotel earlier. It was a two-room suite with a little kitchenette and a very spacious bathroom with a separate extra sink area between the bath and bedroom. It also had two balconies (both great
ocean views) one on the bedroom and one on the living area. The living area/dining room was very very spacious with French doors separating it from the bedroom. All their rooms I'm sure are not this big but it was worth paying the extra money for this suite. The staff was great and the view was spectacular. I stay in hotels a lot and this is one of the top ones especially for Virginia Beach.
A family member that was staying in the practically new "Boardwalk Hotel" down the street from Courtyard was even inpress with the room.
Great Views, Lots of Windows
My wife and I stayed at this hotel this past weekend. I had selected this hotel based upon the reviews on tripadvisor.com and the location on the boardwalk. We were very impressed with our king suite room. Our balcony overlooked the beach and boardwalk, and the side windows had a view of the park. The kitchenette, bedroom, bathroom, and living areas were all very clean. The large bedroom even had a little sitting area and the sink room was separate from the toilet/shower room. The refrigerator and microwave worked well (there are a few convenience stores close by). We didn’t eat in the restaurant, but we did swim in the pool, which was clean and stocked with towels. The balcony had 2 chairs and a little table and was partially-private. We enjoyed watching the people below walk and ride by. The hotel itself was clean and looked fairly new and the staff was professional. Parking was a challenge so once we found a spot, we left the car there the whole time. The elevators were painfully slow so we took the stairs (down) most of the time. There was a small tear in one of the couch cushions, but it disappeared when you sat down. Be sure to get a room on a lower floor. The elevators are shared with the hotel staff, so the higher rooms are a hassle to get to. The lower floors are also closer to the boardwalk action. Marriott Rewards members beware: early check in/late check outs are not honored at this location. Even though it was very expensive, I would recommend this hotel and would stay there again.
Best Hotel on our trip

We stayed on March 25, 2004, and were impressed from check-in to check-out. Our room ($135 total) included a private oceanfront balcony and in-room jacuzzi tub. The staff's highest priority was our happiness during our stay. The room was the best of the 3 hotels we stayed at during our vacation - the room was clean, the view was beautiful, and the hotel offered good placement between neighborhood attractions.
After this trip, we are sold on Courtyard for all of our hotel stays.

I do a lot of business traveling and frequently stay at Courtyard by Marriott hotels. I was somewhat apprehensive after reading the reviews.
The reputation of the chain made me think that the hotel would be up to my standards. Admittedly, I have high standards for hotels, according to my husband. However, I expect cleanliness above all else. I was very disappointed with the room in Virginia Beach. The hotel looked promising upon arrival. The parking is extremely tight but I can live with that. I recommend using the parking garage acroos the street in order to avoid dings in your car. The room was "surface" clean. There was a somewhat stale smell, but that disappeared when the a/c was turned on. The bathroom was dirty. It was obvious the shower curtain hadn't been changed since the hotel opening. It was moldy. The shower was grimy and the toilet had not been cleaned very well. The coffee pot and cups looked as if they had never been cleaned. I was very disappointed. Not up to the usual standards of this chain.
Top Local Tips for Virginia Beach
It's a bar/resto on the ground floor of the Hilton hotel. Place to be in the weekend.
Think about VaBeach overall
remember that most hotels on this beach are older - even most of the renovated ones are older and many have an 'oceany' smell - especially in the summer. Don't let that detract you from staying on the waterfront. It is fabulous! Most hotels have foot showers and tall showers right outside on the boardwalk. VaBeach used to be (20 years ago) a nasty place to visit. But now it is so much nicer! You may want to ask the hotel what events are happening on the beach and if there are any street closings. We do sand soccer every year and there are thousands of people playing soccer on the beach - may not be the best weekend for a quiet beach stay - but there are lots of extras that weekend, like sports to watch, food on the beach, games, etc. ALSO - parking is always an issue. So make sure your hotel provides enough parking.
there was a restaurant around the corner, I think it was called taltogs, that was amazing! it was a small place but walking distance from the hotel, best seafood I've had in a while.
