t Go If There Is a Convention

from A TripAdvisor Member
After reading the reviews here, I looked forward to our stay at this hotel. It is a lovely hotel, and I'm sure it is a source of civic pride. However, we found 2 significant problems that created a disappointing stay. The first problem is that they allow conventions to take over the hotel. Our first day there, all the people were overflowing into the lobby so that it was hard to move around. In fact, the convention check-in was right across from regular check-in. The next day, there was another convention. The microphone and the singing in the meeting room was so loud that you had to shout to be heard in the lobby. Our room was on the 2nd floor, and we could hear the singing in our room!
The second problem was not as significant as the first. For a hotel its size, they only have 2 luggage carts. We had to wait and complain at check-in and check-out in order to get a cart. I was told that the reason they only have 2 is because they have nowhere to store more than 2. I'm sure that management could solve the problem if they wanted to.
As a result of these problems, we didn't enjoy our stay that much. My suggestion is to ask them if there will be a convention when you visit. If they have one, I suggest staying somewhere else.

We stayed at the Stonewall Jackson Hotel several weeks ago and found it to be quite comfortable and exceeded our expectations. Highlights of staying here:

1. Walking distance to the old section of town. You don't see storefronts like these in modern suburbia any more. The storekeepers had wonderful window displays and the town was very well preserved.

2. Rooms: Clean, beds comfortable.

3. Conference Center: Lucky for me, I was here for vacation and not a boring business meeting. However, the hotel seemed to have some great conference halls for this purpose. A wedding reception was taking place when we were there.

4. Customer Service--fine, no complaints from me.

5. Parking: The hotel was built before there was one car per person. There is a convenient parking garage just around the corner with an elevator to the hotel. It was free to park when I was there (on a Saturday night).

6. Restaurants: We didn't get a chance to eat at the hotel, but there are some decent places down the old main street of Staunton.

Loved It

from bigonbnl
My husband and I booked a room for our anniversary. We love to eat at Mill Street Grill and with the hotel just across the street, it was perfect. The hotel was immaculate in cleanliness and in decor. The rooms are a great departure from chain hotels. The beds were comfortable and the room was very quiet. We didn't even know that we had people in the room next to us! It's in a great location, as a lot of downtown Staunton is a close walk. We visited the pool and whirlpool, it was all very clean and well kept. We also made use of the fitness room while we were there. We had a great stay and hope to make it an annual trip, even if it's only a half hour from home. I HIGHLY recommend this hotel for a romantic getaway.

Nice hotel

Just got back from 2 nights in Staunton. Hotel was above average and the lobby was charming. It was worth it for the money ($109 per night for 2 adults/2 kids) A little disappointed with the pool - smaller than expected.

Horrible Horrible Horrible

from McAlex
Can you say horrible customer service. If you book online - too bad if terrible circumstances make it difficult to get to get to the hotel. A bright smile and that's our policy. Lessons in customer concerns would be in order here!

Great renovation great service

from Hailey
A great renovated hotel with space for meetings. Superbly located in a historic downtown and right next door to a Shakespeare theater.

A Delightful Stay

from akalady03
I arrived at the Stonewall Jackson with a U-Haul trailer attached to my car. Driving up to the hotel, I was a bit nervous that I would not be able to park anywhere, as there are snug, one-way streets and not too many parking lots around. Also the hotel has an adjacent garage, but I could not fit the car and trailer in there. I parked my car in front of the hotel and proceeded to the front desk, I told the Saturday attendant of my concern and she was VERY HELPFUL and instructred me to park on the side of the hotel. I checked in and arrived to my room and was pleasantly surprised at the decor of the room. The bathroom was very spacious and the bed was plush and comfortable. The room was a bit on the small side, but that did not bother me bacause I was staying there alone. I also had the opportunity to walk through the town and take in the artistic sights. I recommend the Baja Mexican restaurant in the town...the food was fresh and tasty. Also visited the Woodrow Wilson Museum. All in all a charming stay in a charming little town. I would definitely stay here again.

Great Hotel

Staunton has been our destination of choice for weekend getaways. This was our first stay at the Stonewall Jackson Hotel, and we really enjoyed our visit. We stayed Mother's Day weekend and felt like we were the only ones at the hotel. While there were weddings on both Friday and Saturday, and a big Mother's Day brunch on Sunday morning, we still felt alone.

We were in an inside king room (Room 501) in the old section of the hotel. On the negative side, our view was of the other part of the hotel. Also the room was cramped. On the positive, the room was beautifully decorated and clean, the bed was luxuriously comfortable, and there was free wireless internet. The staff was pleasant and helpful, and the lobby is quite lovely. We had made reservations online, and the day we left, we checked the rates and found that the rate had gone down $30/night. When we called the hotel, they changed our rate to the lower price.

Staunton is a wonderful town with plenty of things to do and see. Don't miss the coffeehouse next door, the Daily Grind, which is homey, eclectic and fun (and has great coffee!). Also, check out the Green Valley book fair, which is open 6 times a year (---).

A Real Treat

from Erka
We chose this hotel for a weekend getaway and are very satisfied. I echo the other recent comments about the Stonewall Jackson, except for the size of the rooms. We asked for a king size bed and were put in an inside room. The room was about 10 by 10 and the bed took up most of the space. It was clean and attractive, but snug. We asked to change and were quickly given a very nice outside room with a queen bed. Larger but not spacious. Very soft bed but the bedding was luxurious.
We had late night sandwiches from the kitchen and they were good.
Breakfast is expensive. Try Kathy's on Rt 11 south of town.
The hotel location is ideal, with the tourist center in the corner of the parking garage next door. Make sure you visit the Blackfriar’s Theater next door for a tour if you cannot see a play.

Great hotel in a great town!

from caj
This hotel has been beautifully renovated. The rooms are spacious and decorated very tastefully. Service was very good, employees were friendly and attentive. The hotel is within a short walk to shops and restaurants and next to a wonderful Shakespeare theater. I would definately stay here again!

Top Local Tips for Staunton

The play's the thing! Do not miss the American Shakespeare Company at Blackfriar's Theatre. Sheer joy.

Outdoor museum The nearby outdoor museum of farms and homes from early settlers was very interesting - visit in spring or fall - and staffed by knowledgeable interpreters.

Even if you don't like Skakespeare (maybe even especially if you don't) You must see a Shakespearean play at the Blackfriars Theater. If you're a newbie, pick a comedy. It'll change the way you've thought about Shakespeare forever! Don't worry about the language -- you'll get it! If you're already a lover, you'll fall in love again. Sit on the stage if you can!
