The Best Place in Town

from BrianNH
This is a really great place to stay - central, great hosts, tasty breakfast, lovely rooms. We were starting a trip along the Blue Ridge Parkway and spent 3 nights here. Karen and Denny were very friendly and amazingly helpful. They booked us the best seats in the nearby Blackfriars Shakespeare Theatre, recommended restaurants and when I left my jacket (with passports in the pocket!), they FedEx-ed it to me in North Carolina. Nothing was too much trouble.

Denny, as a golfer himself, can recommend and organise tee times. I'm sorry I didn't ask his advice and book a package through him.

We stayed in the Patricia Menck suite. Wonderful! and the lovely bed was so comfortable. The breakfast waffle is big, but don't miss out! No won't need to stop for lunch.

This place is a real gem. We particularly liked the hand-painted wall decoration, the ample parking in a central location, the ease of finding it , the great service and the hosts.

The Perfect Balance

from Cashwell
My wife and I just spent our 2nd stint at Frederick House, having stayed with them for 2 days in the fall. Our return trip originated from the perfect time we had with our first experience, based mostly on our stay at the Frederick House. Located centrally in historic Staunton, there are enough shops / restaurants / places of interest to fill 2 days without getting into your car. The rooms themselves were spacious and comfortable, and remarkably quiet for their downtown location. Some of our most enjoyable times were spent reading and relaxing in the room (while thunderstorms rolled by). The innkeepers were exactly what you would want in a host and hostess. They were friendly and knowledgeable and extremely helpful. They also arranged in advance a 1/2 day horseback riding trip with Dwight at North Mountain, just another example of helping us to get the most out of our experience. A month after our stay, we are already wondering when we can return.

Loved the Fredrick House

My husband and I just returned from a wonderful weekend in Staunton, Virginia, where we stayed at the very hospitable Fredrick House. The Inn is centrally located and convenient walking distance to the Shakespeare Center, as well as shops, restaurants and other local attractions. Our room was spacious and well furnished with lovely antiques and accents. With several buidlings housing the Inn's rooms, there is a private terrrace with tables and chairs, perfect for sipping wine after an afternoon of sightseeing. Best of all, the hosts, Karen and Denny were so very helpful, providing everything from excellent dinner recommendations to cork screw and ice bucket. They were very fine hosts, and we highly recommend the Fredrick House.

Friendly people but horrible bed, overpriced.

We had arrived expecting the quality and amenities of other Select Registry properties in which we have stayed, but were very disappointed. My husband and I were convinced to stay here for our weekend away because of the great TripAdvisor reviews, but 2 bad nights, 2 sore backs, and $250 later, we feel the product didn't merit the hype. While the innkeepers and their staff were helpful and personable, and our room was spotlessly clean, the mattress (not the bedframe) was hard as a rock and creaked loudly whenever we sat down, rolled over, or moved, making for two terrible nights' sleep. Maybe mattress quality and decor vary across the 20+ rooms in this hotel, as others on this site raved about their beds, but sleeping is the whole reason why one stays in a hotel/B&B and our mattress was worse than those in very cheap hotels, truly the worst I have ever slept on. All lighting in the room was cold fluorescent bulbs, making the room feel like a dorm; sound traveled readily through the house in which our room was located; and the decor was a lot frillier and country than the two nonrepresentative pictures on their website indicate. Breakfast was okay but not great (though the fresh fruit was excellent) -- the coffee was very weak and lacked flavor. While we were exploring Staunton -- truly a lovely and friendly town -- we discovered the newly renovated, classy, and gorgeous Stonewall Jackson Hotel just a few blocks away for the same price -- we will be staying there from now on.

Welcoming, convenient, and comfortable

We stayed for a weekend on the way to Williamsburg. The innkeepers made you feel genuinely welcome and helped in any way they could. The hotel consists of several buildings that have been added over the years. We stayed in one that was across the street from Mary Baldwin College and really enjoyed it. Not super luxurious, but very comfortable--like a Grandma Moses painting.

There is a free trolley in Staunton and you can catch it just outside the hotel, but it's very easy to walk to the Shakespeare Center and several excellent restaurants. Staunton is hilly, and the hotel is perched atop one of the hills, so plan on getting a little exercise or driving short distances. Another reader mentioned the downtown noise. I'm sensitive to noise, and it was just not a problem at the Frederick House, even though it was graduation weekend for the local college!

We loved our stay at Frederick House

from codymac
We spent a week at The Frederick House in Staunton, VA and loved this B and B. It is unique in that it is several individual historic buildings that comprise this "small hotel". Our suite was charming and comfortable and always very clean. The owners, Karen and Denny, go out of their way to make you feel like "family". Every member of the friendly staff makes you feel that you are truely welcome. The freshly prepared gourmet breakfasts were delicious and very attractively presented. The varied selection makes you "spoiled for choice" but the apple raisin quiche was our favorite. The diningroom is cozy and attractively decorated with paintings by the local artist, P. Buckley Moss and the setting is perfect for a relaxing breakfast. Karen and Denny see to your every need and are very eager to provide advise about events and beautiful and interesting sites. The towns people are very friendly and proud of their town. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Frederick House and look forward to returning for another visit. Pat and Dave from Mt.Holly, NJ

What a cozy way to spend New Year's Eve weekend! We hated to leave and look forward to returning.

Frederick House is comprised of an elegant group of residences, each with its own personality. Our room was a spacious suite, 10 foot ceilings!, clean and comfortable with tasteful antiques.

Karen and Denny make every effort to ensure that you have a great visit. They are warm and friendly and knowledgeable about the area. Breakfast at Frederick House is yummy!. You'd have to stay a week to sample everything on the menu--now there's an incentive! We took their helpful restaurant recommendations and had two wonderful dinners at the Dining Room and L'Italia which are within walking distance.

Staunton is a warm and sophisticated little town with a variety of shops and several cultural and historical sites including Mary Baldwin College and Blackfriars Playhouse, Next trip we will sample the wineries nearby and horseback trail riding. Thanks for a great visit!

A very nice small hotel

from Zabelle
We spent one evening at the Frederick House Hotel. You will notice that I said hotel, though it is a small hotel, it is indeed a hotel not really a B&B.
The rooms are furnished with a variety of antiques and everything was very comfortable and clean.
One issue that needs to taken into account is street noise. Many of the rooms are either directly on North New St or on Frederick St. This is right downtown, it is not in the country and the rooms are at or right above street level. I am a sound sleeper so it was fine but when I was awake I heard street sounds.
Location is the key here. You can walk to all the downtown attractions and many restaurants. Mary Baldwin College is right across the street.
Denny and Karen are indeed very friendly and gave us a warm welcome. Breakfast is also excellent but it is more hotel style in the seating at individual tables. What we lost in comraderie with our fellow guest we made up for in having an excellent choice of entrees. Your coffee mugs are your menu and there are more than just a few choices.
So if you are looking for the small intimate feeling of a B&B this is not the right place but if you are looking for an interesting hotel with antiques and a great location then the Frederick House is the perfect choice.

We stayed two nights at the Frederick House and enjoyed every moment

We give a 5 star to the property. The beautiful room was spotless clean, the bed was extremely comfortable and the view of the downtown buildings was enchanting.
Smack right in the center of things!
We went two days in row to see the Shakespeare Playhouse and the food at the recommended restaurants were great too.
Thanks to Karen and Denny who helped us enjoy our visit.

We have been guests at the Frederick House five times and are about to make it six. The hotel buildings are within easy walking distance of the Blackfriars Playhouse, downtown restaurants and shops, and the Amtrak station. The rooms and suites, no two of which are identical, are large, comfortable, and attractively decorated; many of them afford scenic views of Staunton. The breakfast, served in the "tea room," is consistently excellent. The hosts and staff have gone out of their way to make our visits pleasant.
