Serious room for improvement

from A TripAdvisor Member
My sister and I stayed at the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside September 9 and were extremely disappointed. As Starwood Gold Members, we did get to stay on the 10th floor which should have been very nice. Stepping out of the elevator, a sign on the lounge door indicated the lounge was closed and the free continental breakfast is only served on weekdays. Walking down the hall, it was obvious no one had run the vacuum cleaner in a while. Plastic wrappers that were scattered on the carpeting remained there at least through 3 PM the next day. Some of the room doors were wedged open with towels apparently to be aired out or perhaps dried out - it was difficult to tell. The room sign with our room's number had fallen off some time back and not been replaced. The dust ruffles hanging from the bed had a quarter inch of dust. The remote control for the TV set was no where to be found. The bathroom door had to be kept closed through the night due to the amount of transmitted noise through the vents. The hotel staff was not helpful in recommending any place other than the hotel restraunt for my sister to eat breakfast or lunch while I was at the meeting. The parking fee was also quite high given the fact that this was Norfolk, VA, not New York City or DC, and especially given the absolutely ludicrous amount of taxes added to the hotel daily charge which added close to another $40 to the room rate. I was very disappointed - I travel two weekends a month and aside from one other experience, this was the worst hotel I have stayed at - far better to stay at a cheaper hotel and get what you pay for than one that purports to be something it is not.

Needs updating

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed one night on our way to Hatteras, NC. The Staff was friendly enough but the whole hotel needs updating. The pool area is a joke, it was small and in need of something. That something is updating just like the rest of the hotel. When told that there were towels at the pool area. I expected beach towels. What you get are a third the size of beach towels. Carpet in the hall ways and room are stained and worn.

s are better than this place

Check in took 2 1/2 hours! Although we were waiting in the lobby for the "right time" to check in for over an hour, a bus load of church groups came in about 20 minutes before check in time and they checked them in first! They also obviously gave away our rooms! My husband and I were there on vacation for a concert in town and 10 friends were also staying there. We had reservations for over 3 months and had called 5 times to check on our room just because we were all so excited about our "water view" and our "suites" in a great hotel. We are all in our 20's and 30's and aren't used to splurging on expensive rooms. They really saw us coming and charged us $250/night! Then they put us up in rooms with a view of the parking lot! They made us wait 2 1/2 hours AFTER our check in time to get us to our rooms. When we called for the manager to complain about the view and the very small room with dirty walls that was supposed to have been a 2 room suite, he said there was nothing he could do except offer us dinner that evening. When we told him we had plans to go to the concert (which he knew) he said he couldn't offer us dinner any other night and did nothing! He wouldn't even discount our room for us as an alternative to the lies we had been told and the extreme disappointment we felt. He said they had overbooked by about 100 people and had a real mess. He was doing the best he could. We're pretty sure he checked in the bus load of people ahead of us without reservations. That's probably where our rooms went! We called every other place in town but everything was booked and we were soooo disappointed! I read some of these good reveiws and wonder if these people are just the management of the hotel writing them?

Could be a world class hotel with a little effort

The location is great, you can walk to many attractions, shopping and places to eat. The downside is that I too got home to find excess charges to my credit card and I agree that the front desk staff is very rude.

Don't stay here if you are looking for good service. I finally got the charges reversed but it is irritating to have to go through that much trouble. The beds, however, are incredible.

Overall the hotel needs new carpeting and the knobs to the sink faucets were broke off so we had to use the water out of the tub. We got a great price on the rooms through Priceline, but I would have been very unhappy if I had paid full price.

Great location, terrible rooms

from NC5Travelers
We stayed at this hotel with our 3 children while my husband attended a nearby conference at the Marriott. We were unable to get a room at the Marriott but my husband states it was a very nice hotel. We did stay the first night in town at the Courtyard 2 blks away and it was very nice. This Sheraton has a wonderful location and if you get a harbor side room, it is a great view, even through our dirty windows. However, when we arrived, we were suppose to have a non-smoking room. They put us in a room which said it was non-smoking but it had a super strong cigarette smell. We immediately switched rooms. The new room had a balcony and on this non-smoking room balcony were 2 cigarette butts and it was very dirty. The carpeting was wet and filthy and the room had a stinky and musty odor. Unfortunately, we did not realize the wet carpet until we returned later at night as we dropped our bags off and left immediately. The entire place needs a good spraying of bleach. The bathroom was dirty. There was wipable dirt on the back of the door, side of the tub and under the sink. Even the light switch needed to be scrubbed free of dirt. I went to the hotel desk the am after our first night to see if we could switch to a cleaner room. The hotel desk clerk barely looked at me, despite asking if she could help me, and she cut me off mid sentence when I asked to switch rooms. She did not care why I wanted to switch rooms and told me there were not any rooms available now (even though she did not look) and IF there was a room later, I would have to wait til the evening to switch. I cranked the air to see if it would help dry the carpet-which it did mostly. This helped some with the smell. We tried to stay out of our room until bedtime, minimizing our time in there. You have to use valet for $20 per night for parking as we were told it would be $13 to self park but they would charge you $5 every time you moved your car and it was a block away. The valet men were difficult to find at times. The kids and I did use the pool and fitness center. The fitness center was adequate although the weight machine did not work. The pool was clean and nice and there was towels available at the pool. The bed was more comfortable then most hotel beds and there was ample pillows. For some reason on the am we were to check out, despite a do not disturb sign on our door and despite the maid watching the kids and I leave in our swimsuits to head to the pool, the maid cleaned up the room while we were gone. She made the bed, replaced the coffee packet, emptied the garbage cans, etc. It made me wonder if the next people would be sleeping in our bed with our already used sheets? It seemed a waste of energy and resources to me since we were checking out about 90mins later. Overall, I could not wait to leave this hotel as it was one of the most overpriced, filthiest hotels I have ever stayed at.

Loved It

from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel was superb. Friendly staff, great room, clean, fluffy pillows and towels, great location adjacent to the Festival Marketplace, and dining available (although we didn't use it).
Pool looked very nice and clean (once again, didn't have time to use it.) Great harbor views from the room (ask for an even-numbered room.) Free Internet access in the lobby. Convenient giftshop, huge lobby, outdoor pool and exercise room are there.
Would love to go back.

Not first class but I would go back again

My husband and I stayed at the Sheraton Waterside Friday, May 27th leaving Sunday, May 29h, 2005 (Memorial Day weekend) I found the front desk staff pleasant. Our room was ready a little before check in time. The room was on the first floor with easy access to the swimming pool...(which wasn't going to be open until Monday, Memorial Day which was a shame because the weather was hot and sunny but couldn't swim.) However, the pool was being filled with water and it looks like it would be very nice when they get the tables and chairs around it. If you want easy access to the pool stay around room 118. The room was clean and the bed was more comfortable than most hotels. The water was hot and there was a nice Shower Massage shower head that had a nice flow...no severe water restrictor. The light bulbs in the room are very low wattage...next time I travel I'm taking a few higher wattage bulbs with me to put in the lamps when I'm there. The location of this hotel is great...walk out the door and you're right on the Waterside "boardwalk". Nice thing is the hotel is on the end so even though it's very handy location wise it's quiet. We ate breakfast outside on the patio this morning...had a nice view of the water. Their breakfast buffet is pretty good. Only drawback is we came back one night around 11:30PM and couldn't get into the hotel...all the doors on the waterside were locked so we had to walk all the way around to the front of the hotel. They should put locks on those doors that can only be opened with guests room keys. I would stay here again because I didn't have any complaints to this point. I've read where some people have had unauthorized credit card charges on their bill but I just got home and I won't have my bill for awhile yet. All in all I would stay there again mainly because of the convenient location.

best stay ever

Credit card fraud!!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed at the Sheraton Hotel Norfolk from Jan 7th through 10th 2005. While I found the hotel resonably confortable, I felt that the service was greatly lacking. The staff is quite rude and very disinterested in providing anything close to quality service. Finally, I returned home to find a message from my credit card company indicating that 6 unauthorized charges were hitting my account stemming from the Sheraton Hotel Norfolk. You can imagine my surprise when I visited this board and found another TripAdvisor user with the same story. I would recommend staying away from this property.

Buyer Beware!

This place can be quite a deal as Priceline sends you here exclusively if you request Norfolk and a room can almost always be had here for around $60. But, oh boy, do you pay in other ways. I have stayed here several times a year for the past three and have now sworn off using Priceline for Norfolk as I don't want to ever stay here again. Upon arrival you will be met by vulture- like porters who have recently taken to hiding the baggage carts to discourage you from loading your own baggage in to the hotel. On my last stay I had to complain to the manager that the bellmen said there were no carts available, and when FOUR were discovered hidden from the public the head bellman tried to tell me those were held in reserve for "the elderly and handicapped". Next you will encounter the ultimate in poor hotel planning - there is no parking here! You will be directed to a parking garage a block and a half away which will charge you $20.00 a night! Now, that room isn't such a bargain huh? Once in you room you will see the deceptive practice of two bottles of water with "Sheraton invites you to enjoy this water" or some such thing written large on a card attached to the two bottles. Only upon reading the mice type on the card do you see they will charge you an exhorbitant $5 per if you accept their invitation. Then you will be charged $1.50 for a local call or even more than that on the same call after a certain number of minutes. As you can see the nuisance fees abound. The beds are nice here as at all Sheratons, but this place will nickel and dime you to death. Try the Radisson downtown for a hotel at the same level without the inconvenience and predatory pricing.

Top Local Tips for Norfolk

NET Bus System Use the NET bus system for any travel in the downtown area. It is free and a stop is located in the parking lot next to the hotel. (ask the front desk) The NET travels throughout downtown and has around 15 stops.

Dine at Trilogy If there is one restaurant to try in Norfolk, it has to be Trilogy. Make a reservation because it's almost impossible to get a table otherwise. Fantastic menu, service, presentation, and preparation. This would be one of the top restaurants even here in Houston. Blew me away.

its a small town, Get a map, you can walk almost everywhare and there is a free electric bus line
