Try the "new" Marriott!

I have reviewed most of the comments on this hotel and as a former employee would like to offer a non-bias opinion of the property. Most of the negative comments stem from improper management prior to July 2003. The hotel was changed over and a new firm now has control of the daily events and guest relations dilemma seen in previous comments. For 2004, everyone should see the changes that makes the largest property in the Norfolk area one of the best. The renovation of rooms and staff have been greatly motivated to impress even the hardest critics. The new menus and culinary delights have been re-invented and hopefully will entice the pallets of our pickiest eaters. I no longer work for the firm but do hope that through the eyes of a former employee with a vast knowledge of the hospitality industry, all viewers try the "new" Norfolk Waterside Marriott.

Absolutely wonderful

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Marriott Waterside hotel this past weekend...and the accommodations were wonderful! We atttended a party at the hotel and found the staff very friendly and accomodating. The hotel lobby was decorated for the holidays and the bar on the second floor had the fireplaces lit in the evenings. I thought these small touches made the hotel ultra romantic and beautiful. I would recommend this hotel to those who are looking to "get away from it all" even if for just a short stay.

Nice place

We stayed here one night. We requested a corner room on a higher level, facing the water. The room was clean, tastefully decorated and had a great view. While my husband worked, I walked about two blocks to a shopping center. We were on the concierge level so we could have breakfast by walking down the hall. It had hot and cold food and was very good.
I would recommend this hotel if you have to stay in the downtown area

Stayed here the night of 06/11/04. We didn't arrive till about 7 p.m because of problems at home and traffic. By this time they had no smoking rooms left. Parking is $19 if purchased thru the hotel with in/out privleges or $15 if purchased at the garage and you do not leave.

Room was great. New bedding and recently redone. Some places showed wear and tear.

Staff was ok.

Perfectly wonderful!

I had the pleasure of staying in the Norfolk Marriott Waterside in early May, 2004, when I came east to attend my niece's graduation from ODU. My brother, her father, also stayed at the hotel. My room was absolutely gorgeous. It was a corner room and had a king bed, two huge windows, comfortable chairs and ottomon, desk, and all the rest. My brother's room was lovely, but was not a corner room so was smaller. The running joke of the weekend was that I had made my reservations after he had and I was put in this beautiful, big room for much less money than he had to pay (thanks to Expedia.) We both thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast buffet each morning. It is well worth the money -- filled with lovely ripe fruits, smoked salmon and all the fixings, omelets made to order, and homemade waffles. I stayed four nights and every morning had different food because there was so much from which to choose. I had to extend my stay one night due to extremely bad weather in the mid-west where I was flying. The gentleman at the desk didn't so much as blink when I asked if I could have the room one more night--without a pause, he said absolutely - and I kept the same rate. That night, my niece joined me to watch the finale of "Survivor". We decided to splurge and ordered ice cream and cheesecake from room service. When we received the tray, a plate full of lovely fresh fruits was included (we laughed about the hotel making sure we ate something healthy!)
On the day of the graduation ceremony, we all came back to "my" room for a break before we went to dinner. We had asked if we could have nine wine glasses sent to the room for our celebration after buying some wine in the Waterside Mall. The glasses arrived immediately upon our arrival back at the hotel. The second floor lounge area is very nice with lots of different seating arrangements. The service we received was flawless in every aspect. We both would definitely recommend the Norfolk Mariotte Waterside as a grand hotel. Thank you for making such a special weekend even better!

We stayed here for one night during Memorial Day weekend 2003 because one of my friends was getting married and everyone was staying at this hotel. We had a very nice view from our room of the harbor. We had a corner room, so windows on two sides. The itself was clean and fine. So, was the bathroom, although a bit small, outdated, and kind of dark.

Avoiding a Disaster!

I was looking for a room at the Marriott because I will be attending a formal there in May, but since a friend of mine reffered me to the Sheraton and after reading these comments, I will be trying the Sheraton (even though it's more expensive). I know how the service is at the Renaisance and if the Marriot is anywhere near as bad, I don't want to stay there!

Great Stay

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Waterside Marriott this past Saturday and found our room and the hotel to be above average. I recommend this hotel.

t Even Try

Forget about this one and go to the Courtyard!

It seems like a nice place until you've been there for a couple. Place is very rundown, rooms are small and smelly, staff is incompetent, rude and clueless.

Not worth spending any money and certainly not up to par with other Marriotts.

Courtyard downtown MUCH better

Not up to snuff when compared to other Marriott Hotels. The rooms are beat up, the beds are old and uncomfortable, the sheets are tattered and old, and the A/C is extremely noisy (and that was on the concierge level). The staff does nothing to make your stay enjoyable. In fact, when alerted to the absence of a room service menu in my room, they waited till after the cook had left to deliver it (even after requesting it three times). Going out of their way to make your stay enjoyable is not in their job description. I'd suggest staying at the Courtyard downtown. Its MUCH newer, cheaper, and only one block away.

I had a great stay..

I had a great stay, bellstaff greeted me with a smile and remembered my name the next day. Check In was fast, food was great. All in all, a wonderful stay.
