Top Local Tips for Harrisonburg

Book hotel early. If traveling in this area in the fall, you should book your hotel early, especially on weekends. The combination of fall foliage tourists and college activities can cause high occupancy in October. I learned this the hard way as I once had to travel about 30 miles south to Staunton, VA for lodging because I did not book in advance. Not one vacant hotel room in Harrisonburg on a Saturday in October!

Mennonite Relief Sale The first weekend in October every year is the Virginia Mennonite Relief Sale at the county fairgrounds just south of Harrisonburg. This begins Friday evening, and runs most of the day Saturday. The big feature is the live auction of handmade Mennonite and Amish quilts, with handmade furniture and original art work. They also have a dinner Friday night (not great but there is also a soup stand and a hot dog/hamburger stand), a fabulous breakfast Saturday morning, and wonderful Saturday lunch options including barbeque. In addition to the live auction there is a silent auction, a huge bake sale with fabulous pies and cakes and more, a plant sale, and Ten Thousand Villages market with handicrafts from around the world, and a sort of yard sale area. Plus a children's auction. There are also always one or two volunteer activities for kids, tractor and horse drawn wagon rides, antique engines, doughnuts, and more. Plan to stay the day!
