The Best Inn Experience
from A TripAdvisor Member
I am on an extended business trip to Washington D.C. and wanting to get out of the city, I decided to go to Fredericksburg to stay at the Richard Johnston Inn for the weekend. It was delightful. The Innkeeper, Bonnie DeLys, warm and welcoming. Each room has a different theme, but is in keeping with the era of when the Inn was built ( 1700's). Such a comfortable bed with luxurious linens. The Inn was all dressed up for Christmas with each room having a Christmas Tree with decorations and twinkle lights. The dining room was especially beautiful, the table sat with Christmas linens, fine silver and glassware. The room was festooned with wreaths and garlands. A wonderful way to get in the Christmas spirit.
Each morning the breakfast served was delicious. Bonnie knows how to Cook and her staff is very gracious and informative. Her two friendly schnauzers are there to greet and welcome you to check in.
Just a quick hour from Washington D.C., Fredericksburg has so much to offer. Revolutionary History, Civil War history, great restaurants, antique shopping, boutiques, historical homes, and the art of Gari Melchers displayed in his home nearby.
I for one will be back in the summer to enjoy the beautiful garden and patio.

Very Special Accomodations
from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I stayed at the Richard Johnson Inn Thursday, Friday, and Saturday Oct. 6-8 and the accomodations were all we could have asked for and much more. We were in Fredericksburg for our daughter's wedding, and the Isabella suite was absolutely perfect. With a separate sitting room with fireplace, table and chairs, and kitchen area with a small refrigerator the room was ideal for relatives to meet and discuss the day's events. Saturday's and Sunday's breakfasts were so beautiful; Bonnie's cheese souffle and banana pecan pancakes were scrumptious and served graciously. The other guests were delightful. The chocolate chip cookies on the dining room sideboard and the brandy and chocolates in the room made a wonderful stay even better. My father stayed in the kitchen suite and accidently left a suit in the room. Bonnie mailed it to us in a timely and helpful manner. The Richard Johnson Inn made a memorable weekend even more fantastic. We will recommend it to all our friends!
A pleasant stay

We were given a warm welcome in spite of arriving late due to traffic accidents on I-95. We stayed 2 nights in the week in a well appointed and comfortable room (Olivia's).
The one 'down' side was that not everyone likes dogs, particularly when they chew your feet !
Nevertheless the continental breakfasts were fine - the innkeeper is rightly proud of her cooking - and we enjoyed the interaction with other guests.
A good example of why we choose to stay in B&Bs rather than impersonal hotels.

We just spent 3 very comfortable nights at the Richard Johnston Inn. Our room the Canopy Room was on the second floor and it had beautiful Victorian furniture and the highest queen size canopy bed we have ever slept in. I don't know what thread count the sheets were but they were as soft as could be and we had plenty of pillows to make us comfortable weather we were laying down or sitting up. If you feel the need of a little libation there is a decanter of brandy on the nightstand.
I really appreciated the wireless internet access and the giardelli chocolates stashed in the little box on our dressing table.
Bonnie provides a marvelous breakfast. Friday was an extended continental with yogurt, cereal, fresh fruit, cherry coffee cake and juice and coffee. The fruit here is exceptional, a large bowl of kiwi, strawberries, mellons and pineapple. On Saturday we had cheese souffle with the best bacon I have ever had and Sunday was pecan pancakes with sausage balls. If you are in need of a little snack Bonnie's special chocolate cookies are always available on the sideboard in a glass cookie jar and there are bowls of candy all over the house.
Your every comfort is catered to here and we would not hesitate not only to return here ourselves but to recommed it to our friends.
We met so many wonderful people over our three days there that we all lingered at the table Sunday reluctant for it to end. It was truly a very special stay.

Lovely inn, memorable experience

We arrived for a late check-in and found our room with ease and everything was in wonderful condition. The picturesque room was quite spacious and comfortable with champagne awaiting us to celebrate our wedding night. The bed was comfortable, the towels and robes were soft and luxurious, and we marveled over the great value and look forward to returning to "get away from it all" again soon!
Lovely stay.(stayed there in 2002,2003 and 2005).

My husband, adult daughter(both teachers),and myself have stayed at the Johnston Inn several times. We have enjoyed our stays immensely. We stayed in the apartment the last time and it was great. In 2004-due to a power outage,we had to sit in the dark for several hours. My daughter and i helped where we could with candles and etc.Bonnie saw to it that everyone was comfortable. We found Bonnie(the housekeeper)to be extremely effcient, fun and a wonderful cook.Loved Sam and Scooter too.Our stays there have been wonderful. By the way-the two other gals there,Laura and Millie-just added to our enjoyable stay.We left with 3 new friends.
A charming B+B makes for an unforgettable getaway

This is a place unlike no other! The rich, historic charm of the town of Fredericksburg makes a perfect setting for the Southern style atmosphere of the Richard Johnston Inn. We were greeted by the delightful innkeeper, Bonnie, who introduced us to the place. The inside is antique, very clean and you can see that this is a place with character. There is a dining room area with a large table where breakfast is served in the morning. This is the place where we got to meet some of the other guests in the B+B, I enjoyed this unique characteristic of the inn. The breakfast was just right - I loved the apple sausage!
The town of Fredricksburg is quaint, but certainly filled with things for visitors to do. We of course visited the site of the battle of Fredericksburg, but also enjoyed many of the small shops and local art. One of our favorites included visiting the John Paul Jones House which is right in town.
We stayed in the Old Towne Room which was immaculately decorated down to the wall mural behind the bed. The bed was comfortable and the room was equipped with all of the amenities including luxurious bath robes for every guest.
The two Scottie dogs were adorable and were a great complement to a beautiful stay here. All around this is a great place to visit!

Good location, poor service
from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at the Richard Johnston B&B for our 1 yr. anniversary. We read many reviews on the inn and determined this was a place we wanted to visit for sure. After arriving at the inn, we felt the inn and room we stayed in were beautiful. The dogs were also very cute, though Scooter kept chewing on us! Unfortunately, after we arrived back to our room from a night enjoying the town, we found our room was very warm and muggy and we could not find anyone near to help remedy the problem. We tried to sleep, but it is hard when you are warm and sweating. We even opened our room's door to get some of the much cooler air from the hallway. Then, the continental-style breakfast was a bit disappointing. With 10 guests at the table it was a bit awkward walking from one side of the room to another getting your drinks and food (cereal, fruit and blueberry bread for us- and don't forget the leftover quiche from two mornings before we were offered). The innkeeper, Bonnie, was not necessarily rude to us, but very short and not very helpful. We left disappointed and wishing we would have discussed our concerns with her, but were afraid to hurt her feelings or how she might react. We probably won't visit again, too expensive for such poor service.
Management Response

I strive to make every guests visit a pleasant experience and if I had been told about this problem, I would have addressed their concern at the time. I happily refunded the full deposit of the guests visit to them by mail with a letter of apology.
The Inn serves a continental breakfast during the week and the 4 air conditioning units are kept at 72 degrees.
I ask everyone at every breakfast if everything is all right in their rooms and if there is anything that they need.
I am really sorry that I cannot please everyone

this is a beautiful place to stay where a fine and sumptuous setting sets the scene for a memorable break. The bedroom with gorgeous linen and a four poster bed was magnificent and the dining room, where home cooked breakfast was served by candlelight and fairy lights was a very welcome experience. Shops and restaurants are right outside so for convenience and price, as well as great hospitality from the owner, this place cannot be beaten if you want to stay in Fredericksberg
A Pleasure

Easy to recommend highly. Very well located. Common areas very comfortable. Bedroom suite well appointed though, as a family of four, we pushed its capacity a bit. Breakfast was excellent, and Bonnie, the innkeeper, was informative and friendly. The fresh chocolate chip cookies in the jar waiting for us as we arrived were an outstanding touch.

La Petite Auberg Fantastic restaurant. They also have an early dinner special from 4:30-7pm. It is $20 for a 5 course meal. The selections are well worth it. EXCELLENT dining.
