Great location, service; average hotel

My husband and I stayed at the Omni this past weekend (2/20) during a visit to our alma mater. We selected the hotel, frankly, because every B&B within a 45-mile radius of Charlottesville was booked. We were not expecting deluxe accommodations, so we were pleasantly surprised by the attentive, friendly service we received and the hotel's location at the far end of the downtown mall. The hotel lobby opens directly onto the mall, offering quick access to the shops, restaurants (the C&O is a must), cinemas and ice-skating rink of the trendy pedestrian center. Our spacious "deluxe" room featured enormous windows, offering views of the hotel lobby, which is open and airy and has a nice fountain. We were on the second floor, so any views of the downtown mall were obscured, but I think rooms on higher floors would offer a much clearer view. Another definite plus: the room boasted wireless Internet access and a conference-room sized table.


The cons: The hotel was dingy and dated. Mustard factored heavily in the color scheme. Our room, while enormous, had an unpleasant musty odor, perhaps because it was situated next to the hotel pool. Towels and linens were just standard, but again, we were not expecting plush digs. We also were disappointed to learn that the price of our room ($139) did not include breakfast. Because we were in a hurry and didn't have time to dine out, we ended up paying the $12/person for the hotel breakfast. I'd give the breakfast a good rating in terms of variety, as it included an omelette bar, fresh fruit, cereal, pastries, and hot items such as sausage and hash browns; however, the quality was not stellar. The food was standard, institutional food.

Overall, we were pleased with our stay, though next time, we'd much rather stay at a B&B, especially since the Omni's price is comparable once one factors in breakfast ($163, plus tax). The Omni probably is best for business travelers, and perhaps families.

If you're seeking a hotel close to the University, the English Inn (where our friends stayed) is a much better value at $80 for a small suite, including a full (i.e. not continental) breakfast, pull-out sofa, and in-room, dial-up Internet access. That hotel featured a charming lobby with wood paneling (if I'm remembering correctly) and dark carpeting with reds, greens and blues. Our friends' room was clean and above average in size.

Depressing Decor

I had a really bad first impression of this hotel because of the outdated, worn and drab decor, overlit by ugly flourescent lighting. The room was also nothing special. In the morning I used the room coffee maker and there was nothing to put in the coffee - no sugar, cream, nothing - very irritatating. The only positive was that it was so close to the mall, with good shopping, restaurants and a live outdoor concert on the weekend. We were visiting UVA and noticed some nicer motels closer to the campus, where we'll stay next time.

Loved The OMNI and the Front Desk STAFF!!!

This Hotel is far from the 70's but rather very now. They offer FREE high speed internet and a newly remoldled restaurant. The Front Desk Staff is excellent especially Hunter. He is the new concierge and is more than willing to assist with reservations. I have stayed here numerous times and never been disappointed, never!!!!! I will be there again in December and can not wait to see what great suggestions Hunter will have for my family, thank you Hunter!!

State of the Art, 1973

The hotel is ugly -- with worn decor from the early-1970's. Our room overlooked the atrium, and had no window for fresh air. In a word, it stunk -- literally and figuratively. Scratchy sheets, puny towels and a tiny bathroom capped the experience. The buffet breakfast included in our rate was poor -- runny gruel-like oatmeal typified the offerings. And, oh yes, at $179 a night, a rip off in Central Virginia. Many other nicer options nearby. Stay away. (The capper, the parking lot had misplaced and unmarked barriers to demarcate the spaces, one of which scraped my bumper.)

Just right for a weekend stay. Close to Charlottesville Mall, free, convenient parking. Big, clean room, conforatble bed and shower, nice indoor/outdoor pool and large hot tub. We will definitely visit another Omni!

Went to the UVA football game(older alumni). Thought the location was great for a good evening out. Behind the hotel is an outdoor mall with many restaurants to choose from. If the weather is nice - there is outdoor seating for many restaurants. Hotel was a breeze to check-in and out of, the room was clean and in good condition.

A cut above

I stayed here in March on business, and was given a corner room -- wow! It was an altogether pleasant stay, with a courteous staff and some killer martinis at the trendy little bar. It is next to the pedestrian mall, which is convenient for a stroll and a bite to eat. Frankly, I've stayed at more luxorious places but it was certainly well-worth the good deal I got on Expedia.

We were overall very pleased with the Omni in Charlottesville. My husband & I stayed for 2 nights in August for a visit to Monticello and the University. The bar, while somewhat plain, was pleasant enough and the food was very good. However, the room service service was just OK. The server once told us that she only receives "1/2 of the gratuity" listed, which made us feel uncomfortable and forced us to give her additional cash tip. The bathroom could have been nicer (and cleaner) - - and at times, you could hear the doors closing from other rooms in the hallway. The selling point of this hotel is the location. It is literally steps away from the downtown area, which is just wonderful. Shops, restaurants, bars - even an ice skating rink! The free parking is a definite plus! Overall, we would stay again just for the location - it is worth it!

I can't disagree with this review more. I stay at the Omni Charlottesville very often and find it to be wonderful. From the delightful bell staff (always willing to give great directions and suggestions on Charlottesville) to the front desk staff that treats me like family and the marvelous crab cake sandwich in the restaurant, "Going Down Hill" must be going down hill to another Hotel. Over the years this hotel feels like my home away from home!!!! and I LOVE it.

Going downhill...

Not sure if there's been a change in management over the last 1.5 years, but this hotel definitely isn't what it used to be. During my last few stays, more and more things have taken away from the once luxurious feel of the place. Doorman/concierge seemed to have disappeared, gift shop has closed, carpet is tattered and worn, items in minibar are always stale/moldy, pool areas now look nothing like the pictures on the website, desk staff don't always follow through anymore. The upgrades that have been implemented are worse than the originals. For instance, the old garden restaurant was much cozier and had better cuisine. The new contemporary design just doesn't seem to fit in with the current building. In the bathrooms, the new sink fixtures force you to use different knobs for hot and cold. Why go back to those days?? They leak so there is an ever-present puddle of water around the top of the sink. This has happened in every room I've stayed in. New toilets in some rooms mean you must flush, flush and flush again. Overall, this hotel seems more and more like a convention center as there now seems to always be a reception in the main atrium lobby on weekend nights. Horrible for regular guests because the noise level carries up the elevator shafts. You are also forced to walk all the way around the building to get to the pedestrian mall. Unless, of course, you don't mind walking right through the middle of a wedding dance! Parking is free in the covered garage, but good luck finding a space during one of these events. It may be time to start looking elsewhere...

Top Local Tips for Charlottesville

Nice Main Drag in Charlottesville but Don't Go in With High Expectations Come out the door of the Omini and you are right on the main street through downtown Charlottesville. Obviously it's a draw, lots of people go there to hang out and enjoy the pedestrian mall and restaurants. But frankly if you're visiting from a "pedestrian" city like Boston, New York or Chicago you may be wondering what the big deal is all about. It's a street with restaurants and stores but no cars. Get your coffee at the Mud House.

Inauspicious location - yummy food Okay, so it's located in the same parking lot as the local Staples, but eat at The Shebeen. It was really yummy, interesting interior and great value. Plus, how often can you say you've eaten at a South African restaurant?

Great choices! The downtown open air mall offers alot of dining choices from take out and bistro style to high end dining.
