Historical Traveller Reviews of English Inn Hotel

little inn with a lot of value

from teddydc
We were looking for someplace clean and comfy to spend a weekend in the "country". For under $100 a night we got a king suite with fridge, wet bar, and microwave, free parking, close to shopping and restaurants, a full hot breakfast, tea service in the afternoon, and an extremely pleasant and helpful staff. If you're really hungry, the Tavern Pancake House is two blocks away and is a favorite with locals and tourists. Would stay again in a hearbeat.

Nasty hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
The English Inn of Charlottesville, VA was the worst hotel I have stayed at. I was on a trip to Washington, DC, with my class and we were in Charlottesville, the best place to be. When the bus passed the hotel, I thought, God, what a nasty hotel that is. When the bus turned in the hotel, I was shocked. I thought we would stay in a hotel like the Hampton Inn, very nice, compared to this one. We, the four of us, all boys, were in a room that was smoky and smelly. The carpet was nasty to look at. The hallway outside the room reeked of smoke. The room itself was medicroe, to put it nicely. The pool looked nice, but we couldn't swim in it. The lobby was nice and big, but was dim even at 4 or 5 in the afternoon. The breakfast was ok, but the big stickler was the powdered eggs. It might be old info, but I would recommend you stay at a nicer hotel, like the Hampton Inn.

Good deal with some service problems

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed at the English Inn for several days in April.

What I liked:
1) Location - off of Rte 29, close to dining and shopping
2) Rooms were clean -- I didn't find any major problems - and I'm a picky person
3) Full hot buffet breakfast for free every morning -- not just continental / cold pastries
4) Reasonable prices (and they offer AAA discounts)

What I disliked:
- The only thing that really bothered me was the service attitude of the front-desk staff and managers. It's not that they were unhelpful, but they don't make eye contact, speak without any enthusiasm when talking to you, and some of the people's tones were just not very pleasant.

Overall, I would still recommend the place, especially if you're just looking for a place to stay, and don't really expect to interact with or ask a lot from the staff.

Family reunion 26 people

from A TripAdvisor Member
We had 26 members of our family together over Christmas weekend, 2005. The staff and accommodations were great. Everyone enjoyed the hearty breakfasts, the conference room and the accommodations. Some enjoyed the large pool. Being centrally located we enjoyed the amendities of the area.

s Best Kept Secret

I am a school photographer who travels most weeks of the year. Frequently, I stay at The English Inn in Charlottesville, Virginia (located very close to Interstate 64). What a value! This non-franchised property provides immaculate, well-maintained rooms, a huge indoor heated swimming pool, a fitness room with a sauna, a complimentary HOT breakfast buffet, complimentary hot tea and cookies in the afternoon, meeting rooms, and shuttle service. Additionally, for those who want a more vigorous workout, The English Inn has partnered with a large, well-equipped fitness facility located about a mile from the hotel; just show your hotel room keycard and you may workout for free.

A three-story property, The English Inn has a unique European exterior and an interior containing lots of dark wood in all common areas. There is a wonderful atmosphere about the place year-round. The rooms are very comfortable.

The staff is friendly and eager to please. The room rates are competitive and often less than what I pay at other hotels.

I have stayed in too many franchised hotel properties to count, all over the southeast. I am always anxious to return to The English Inn where the service, amenities, and value are so much more than what I find elswhere.

I say to any previous reviewer who hated the English Inn wither you're way to picky or you just hit it on a bad day. I stayed here in December 2005 for one night and I found it to be one of the nicest places I've ever stayed in.

Okay, so maybe it's not the English Country Inn it makes itself out to be. However, upon arrival into Charlottesville, my Amtrak Train was 3 hours late and I could not get a taxi. The Amtrak agent said that the inn has a courtesy van. The hotel driver was happy to pick me up. The next day, I had to go to Enterprise to pick up a rental car, however the courtesy van had gone to the airport and would not be back for quite some time. The desk clerk, a very nice (and nice looking!) woman called a taxi and issued a taxi voucher for me. When I had to return to the Amtrak, the van was available and the driver was very helpful about what to visit next time in Charlottesville.

My room was clean and comfortable, the same as any other decent motor hotel. The breakfast was a hot buffet--eggs, potatoes, hot cereal, fruit, etc. Its quality was about the same as any other buffet (I'm not fond of buffet).

This place had about the most courteous staff I've ever encountered and I will definitely be back again.

Great Bed and Breakfast

from SanAntonioTexasParis
We had a family reunion over Christmas for 26 guests. This Inn has a delicious full hot buffet breakfast, a large indoor heated pool, Sauna, fitness center. A plus for the family (great-grand kids 2 and up all the way to the Great Grand parents)was a large meeting room that we turned into "our meeting room" It has large tables for card playing, eating, or just hanging together to talk. We came and went as we pleased and used it for the entire time. Nicer than hanging in the lobby or each others rooms during inclement weather.
The location is great, a Subway nearby and also Bodos bagels...a wonderful bagel place the locals all eat at. The mall just down the road and even Monticello not to far away.
The rooms were large and kept clean by a very efficient staff. King suites, and king bed rooms with pull out sofas that were comfortable by all reports.
The entire family agrees that it was a great place to hold our Christmas reunion.

Barely Average

I try not to be too negative when I write reviews, but I don't think I can help it with this one. First the positives: large room, nice decor in the lobby.

And now the problems:

The staff was extremely unhelpful and unfriendly. They didn't actually do or say anything inappropriate, but it was pretty clear that they do not like their jobs.

The air conditioning in my room did not work and the bedding was worn.

The breakfast was convenient, but terrible. I ate at the hotel the first day, but opted to skip the free food after that.

I will definately choose a different hotel on my next trip to Charlottesville.

found the hotel and staff to be completely pleasant

from A TripAdvisor Member
Although we had originally booked 2 nights at this hotel, due to a change in our travel plans we only stayed 1 night. We found the staff to be very accomodating in all ways, including handling the change in our plans. The room (I believe a standard with 2 double beds) was lovely and clean, (the a.c. worked well) and the breakfast was above average. The pool was also above average.
My daughter just moved to Charlottesville to attend law school at UVA and I would definitely stay here again. A very, very good value.

nothing better than rude employees!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
i stayed at the english inn for one night (though originally planning on staying more). the staff was awful, very rude, and unfriendly. the manager on duty was also rude and looked a little sketchy. (i kept noticing his eyes on my chest). the air conditioning was less then stellar as well as several noisy kids running the halls at all hours of the night.
