Historical Traveller Reviews of Hyatt Regency Crystal City Hotel

Expensive, average and in the middle of nowhere

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed for business. The rooms were a good size and clean but were very bland and average - I dont remember anything special. Very much a business hotel. Nice view from the top floor restaurant but you cant get up there unless you are willing to buy something. Breakfast 'cart' downstairs outrageously priced.

My biggest complaint - it was expensive and nothing worthwhile within walking distance - so be prepared to add cab fees to the price if you are looking to go out for dinner. We had to get a shuttle just to get to the train station.

Overpriced

The Hyatt Regency Crystal City is a large wedge-shaped hotel close to the Regan National Airport (Washington DC). I recently stayed in this hotel for several days to attend a conference. The hotel is clearly aimed at business travellers, and has a large number of meeting rooms and facilities. However, the hotel is overpriced for what is really very average-quality accommodation. There are four places to eat inside the hotel, but they are all expensive and nothing special. Also, beware of the astronomical charges for international phone calls! Some parts of the hotel are rather scruffy and could use an update, but the rooms were generally clean, and the staff were polite. Unfortunately there was a large building site to the rear of the hotel which generated a lot of noise and dust. The hotel is convenient for the airport, but there is not much else in the surrounding area. There is a courtesy shuttle to the metro station, but it is a long way to the center of Washington DC. If you are a tourist and looking to visit the attractions, then it will be cheaper and more convenient to stay somewhere much closer.

Fair, at best, and pricey too.

This is our second visit to this hotel. We were disappointed with many aspects of our stay.

1) The carpet was olld and dirty; soiled from years of use.
2) The rooms were poorly appointed. No refrigerator or microwave, odd for such a pricey hotel.
3) Valet parking at $20 per night was mandatory, and the space was under construction, which made it difficult to get our car.

Only just better than expected

Where to start - the bed was comfortable. That is about all that was good about this hotel. The staff were rude to a point that was unbelievable, not to mention completely incompetent, not only at check in (the two I had the misfortune of talking to appeared to be incapable of working the hotel computer system), but also in the concierge station and the hotel lobby bar. The decor is worn and dated, carpets on the floor I was staying on were badly soiled in the corridors. The Hyatt group would be better off getting rid of this hotel, as I would be hesitant about booking to stay in another Hyatt after this experience.

Better than expected

Wednesday to Saturay stay at $70/night through Priceline. We had a nice large room, consistent with what I normally expect from Hyatt. Staff was very friendly and accommodated special room requests. Coffee bar in lobby was convenient and free internet in the lobby. Only major complaint was the time it took for car to be brought up each morning. The whole process was disorganized and under staffed.

Stayed here 6/23/05-6/25/05

I got a good price for this hotel on Priceline. The lobby was impressive. Glass elevators and all. I got up to the 9th floor where my room was and I wasn't impressed anymore. Nothing horrendous, but the hallways seemed worn and dingy. Some of the room numbers on the doors were broken. My room (914) had a lovely view of the crane and construction going on behind the hotel (I guess the Priceline customers get that view). Again, nothing terrible in the room, but the rug was dirty (not un-vacuumed, actual dirt stains). The bathroom was clean enough but it definitely showed age. I was happy that this hotel had a pool for my kids but it was not heated and it was freezing. My kids did enjoy the pool the first night (Friday) but on Saturday some kind of school group checked in to the hotel and we couldn't even get near the pool that night. Actually it was so overwhelming that you couldn't get an elevator from the lobby without waiting 10 minutes. The staff seemed friendly and accomodating though. The shuttle to the Metro was not as efficient as it could have been. Overall I would have to say that if you get a really good price for this hotel and you are only staying a night or two go for it. Otherwise look somewhere else.

Better than expected -- and great conference food!

After reading reviews, I was worried, but I was pleasantly surprised. True, carpet was worn. But room was comfortable and clean, main conference facilities were very good, and the staff was responsive. And the conference meals (all 3 lunches) were excellent!

So Overpriced, So Not Homey

I stayed at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City last week. "Disappointing" is the best word I can use to describe my experience. The hotel was overridingly lacking in warmth and friendliness. Obviously a conference hotel, it was mobbed with anonymous attendees to the point where the whole place seemed cold. I can't believe how much the hotel wants to charge for basic things you might want. For example, $2.00 for a soda? After setting rates so high for the guestrooms, why do they need to make extra money on poor thirsty travelers? The room I stayed in was outdated in decor. The beds were ok.

Personally, I've enjoyed stays at less "ritzy" hotels such as the HIlton Garden Inn. I've ended up at many hotels in the last few months as I have traveled to DC, and the Hyatt was definitely my least favorite.

Booked w/Hotwire - cheaper is not always better

I gave the hotel 2 stars because I expected more from a Hyatt. The rooms still need to be upgraded. More important than the bedding/draperies is the plumbing. Old bath & skink faucets (loose) & in vanity area there was a cigarette burn on the sink and water pressure not great.

Used kleenex & other bits of paper on guest room floor upon check in & check out next day.

Dining room on top level AC is out of balance and way too hot. Prices steep but expected at a Hyatt. Hotel shuttle service inconsistent & not timely. Passenger wanting for taxi into city frustrated at availability. Man took shuttle to catch cab at airport. Hotel van driver suggested passenger get off during traffic near airport & grab cab also in traffice (dangerous & stupid). Passenger refused & got out at airport to catch cab.

No good restaurants w/in walking distance of hotel.
When available, have to take shuttle to Crystal City.

Another mediocre offering from Hyatt

This is not the place to stay if you want the flavor of Washington DC. It's located in a sterile corporate suburb. If, like me, you get stuck here because of business, you will be spending a lot of time taking the hotel shuttle to the metro, or a lot of money on taxis--it's $15 to anywhere interesting in DC. The hotel looks a little tired--your basic 70's atrium hotel lobby--why do they use so much glass when they never clean it? Restaurant staff is pleasant but amateurish, the bartender didn't know how to make a martini, and the concierge desk is run by thugs. On the plus side, the crab cake sandwich at Cinnabar is delicious, and the Portico toiletries are high quality, though I notice Hyatt has stopped providing moisturizer--another cost-cutting measure in the relentless race to the bottom?

Top Local Tips for Arlington

Restaurants Found some great food on 23rd street - just a 4 block walk from the hotel. Also, Crystal City Drive (another block down) has several other restaurants and a small mall. Hotel offers free shuttle to Regan airport and free shuttle to local metro which allows for quick & easy visits to DC and other nearby neighborhoods.

Stay in D.C. for D.C. If you're visiting Washington, D.C., don't stay in VA. Everything is far and cabs can get pricey.

Italian Restaurant Had a great dinner at the Portofino Restaurant, just a short walk from the hotel.
