Visit Mt. Vernon The new visitors center and museum at Mt. Vernon are outstanding. Arrive early and try to have lunch at the Mt. Vernon Inn. if you are a history buff, the new facilities greatly enhance the MV experience.

Lots of Secondhand Smoke Thi is a "tobacco" state, and it shows in many bars and restaurants. Smoking is permitted in "family" restaurants, which came as quite a shock to us "northerners" who are used to smoking be banned in most public places from Maryland on north thru Maine. It was disgusting to see so many smokers, including people with kids. We actually walked out of two restaurants becuase even waiting for a table was unbearable -- it was like being thrown in time.

Use the Metro! After 9:30am on weekdays and all day on Sat/Sun and federal holidays, get a day pass for the Metro rail. It costs about $8 and will take you to every major attraction in the District. You are almost always within walking distance of a Metro station, and most hotels in the area offer shuttles to the nearest station.
