great place to stay with a family
from KruserDenverThumbs up for a great remodeled hotel
from dmajyeeI can't complain about the ventilation system in the hotel since the temperature during our trip was in the pleasant 60's - 70's. The hotel has a sign posted in the room stating that there is a main air conditioning/heating system and that it's regulated to provide a "comfortable" temperature for all. It also admitted that some people are going to complain it's too cold and others too hot.
We appreciated that there were a couple computers available on the first floor "business room" for internet purposes. I was able to check my email and local news.
We took advantage of the continental breakfasts that was served every morning. We had bagels, pastries, cereal, fruits, juices and milk. Because we had a kitchen available, we also cooked some eggs and sausages that we bought from a supermarket a couple blocks away. The maid service was nice to place everything in the dishwasher so that everything was cleaned for the next day.
Just few blocks south of the hotel on S. Van Dorn Street there is a outdoor shopping mall just a called Van Dorn Station where there were several ethnic restaurants. We ate there when we returned from Washington DC in the evening and had Thai, Indian, Japanese, Italian, and Mexican food.
The one disadvantage I found was the time it took to get to Washington DC tourist sites. The hotel provides a shuttle to the closest Metro station (and to stores and restaurants within 1 mile radius) and I would plan at least one hour to get to the Smithsonian museums.
I know there are travelers who stay right in DC and will say that they can step out of their hotel and walk to the museums within minutes. Yes, that is a convenience this hotel doesn't offer. But this hotel is for those parents who want their kids to be able to watch TV from sofas in the living room eating microwave popcorn while they are in their bedroom watching another program on another TV. All this for a reasonable price.
Good value, Great Service

from A TripAdvisor MemberAlso, the remodeling is a poor effort to update this old apartment builing. The rug was obviously put down over linoleum, and it crackled with every step. Beware of the air bubbles, I tripped walking in.
I walked into the room, turned around, and went directly to the front desk to cancel my reservation. However, since I had checked in to get my keys, they were unwilling to refund the purchase of the hotel room, at all. The woman at the front desk was rude, and I had to wait about five minutes while she was on the phone just to be acknowleged. She said all that she could was get me a fan, like that was going to help. The cancellation fee was the entire price of the room, so I was stuck.
I ended up changing rooms to a different floor, and this room was slightly better and much cooler. However, I can't imagine what the rooms are like that haven't been remodeled.
On the plus side, the shuttle runs to the metro frequently, and the buffet breakfast was convenient. However, if you are reading this, I suggest that you look elsewhere.
Good Value, Poor Customer Service and Management
from A TripAdvisor MemberOn the other hand, the suites are large and comfortable, albeit the suite we were in (no doubt due to our low rate) had not been renovated and DEFINITELY showed its age. Housekeeping was average. The location is excellent, and the hotel offers transportation to Metro and local shopping.
Bottom line--get a rate below $100/night or find another hotel.
If You Want Pet Friendly
from A TripAdvisor MemberI liked: the free shuttle, free parking, the location in Alexandria, the free breakfast, having two tv sets, lots of space in room.
Not crazy about: the cold pool, the lumpy bed, the bullet hole in the window, generally older decor, old smell, slow elevators.
It's a three star hotel so it was just about what I expected overall. Not great, not terrible. It was ok.
Very Comfortable Accommodations

from ZoozleEverything was clean, the staff were friendly and I'd recommend it to anyone.
Great price, great hotel

from A TripAdvisor MemberTop Local Tips for Alexandria
Metro The Metro system is the best way to get around in DC, particularly when you don't know where you are going. It is easy to navigate and a full-day pass is $6.50, though you can't use them until after 9:30 a.m. It is very clean and we felt quite safe.
Proximity to attractions - not really It's not that close to the main attractions (Old Town or getting to the DC area), and public transportation is dangerous to this hotel...seedy neighborhood around the hotel. Do not recommend staying at the Washington Suites Alexandria at all, and especially if you do not have a rental car. A local person said at night, the area isn't good for walking back from the Metro station.
Travel from Reagan Airport Take the subway blue line to Van Dorn Street, and the hotel shuttle will pick you up. It is a life-saver during rush hour and faster than a taxi.
