great place to stay with a family

from KruserDenver
Our family of 4 stayed at the Washington Suites and were very pleased with the accomodations for the price. The bedroom for the parents was spacious, the kids were happy with the sleeper sofa and their own TV in the living room, and a kitchen for snacks, fridge food and drink (I don't cook on vacation). Washington DC can be very expensive, and this was like getting two rooms for the price of one.

Thumbs up for a great remodeled hotel

We're glad that this hotel completed its remodeling by the time we arrived in May 2005. I don't know what previous visitors experienced before but I must say that the rooms were newly painted and carpets and bathroom fixtures were new. The beds were firm and comfortable. The only furniture that might have been dated was in the living room. We had a suite that included 2 bedrooms, 2 bath, living room with a sofabed, kitchen and dining area.

I can't complain about the ventilation system in the hotel since the temperature during our trip was in the pleasant 60's - 70's. The hotel has a sign posted in the room stating that there is a main air conditioning/heating system and that it's regulated to provide a "comfortable" temperature for all. It also admitted that some people are going to complain it's too cold and others too hot.

We appreciated that there were a couple computers available on the first floor "business room" for internet purposes. I was able to check my email and local news.

We took advantage of the continental breakfasts that was served every morning. We had bagels, pastries, cereal, fruits, juices and milk. Because we had a kitchen available, we also cooked some eggs and sausages that we bought from a supermarket a couple blocks away. The maid service was nice to place everything in the dishwasher so that everything was cleaned for the next day.

Just few blocks south of the hotel on S. Van Dorn Street there is a outdoor shopping mall just a called Van Dorn Station where there were several ethnic restaurants. We ate there when we returned from Washington DC in the evening and had Thai, Indian, Japanese, Italian, and Mexican food.

The one disadvantage I found was the time it took to get to Washington DC tourist sites. The hotel provides a shuttle to the closest Metro station (and to stores and restaurants within 1 mile radius) and I would plan at least one hour to get to the Smithsonian museums.

I know there are travelers who stay right in DC and will say that they can step out of their hotel and walk to the museums within minutes. Yes, that is a convenience this hotel doesn't offer. But this hotel is for those parents who want their kids to be able to watch TV from sofas in the living room eating microwave popcorn while they are in their bedroom watching another program on another TV. All this for a reasonable price.

Good value, Great Service

We stayed at the Washington Suites Alexandria with a group of 16. The service was outstanding. The free shuttle to the metro station was terrific and everyone went out of their way to help us. The breakfast buffet was some what limited, but enough to fill us up, I would certainly consider staying here again if I return to our Nation's capital

This is an old apartment building, currently under remodeling. I had problems from the get-go. Be warned, during the spring and the fall, there is neither heat nor air-conditioning, just a central warm air. My room was on the second floor, and even though it was only March, it was very hot. So hot I instantly started sweating when I walked in.

Also, the remodeling is a poor effort to update this old apartment builing. The rug was obviously put down over linoleum, and it crackled with every step. Beware of the air bubbles, I tripped walking in.

I walked into the room, turned around, and went directly to the front desk to cancel my reservation. However, since I had checked in to get my keys, they were unwilling to refund the purchase of the hotel room, at all. The woman at the front desk was rude, and I had to wait about five minutes while she was on the phone just to be acknowleged. She said all that she could was get me a fan, like that was going to help. The cancellation fee was the entire price of the room, so I was stuck.

I ended up changing rooms to a different floor, and this room was slightly better and much cooler. However, I can't imagine what the rooms are like that haven't been remodeled.

On the plus side, the shuttle runs to the metro frequently, and the buffet breakfast was convenient. However, if you are reading this, I suggest that you look elsewhere.

Good Value, Poor Customer Service and Management

This is a tired hotel undergoing a poorly managed renovation. For instance, the hotel was re-tiling the front lobby area. During our two week stay (due to renovations on our home, ironic), the hotel closed the lobby area to guests trying to get to their rooms FOUR TIMES. And none of those closures were announced to guests in advance.

On the other hand, the suites are large and comfortable, albeit the suite we were in (no doubt due to our low rate) had not been renovated and DEFINITELY showed its age. Housekeeping was average. The location is excellent, and the hotel offers transportation to Metro and local shopping.

Bottom line--get a rate below $100/night or find another hotel.

If You Want Pet Friendly

This is your hotel. I saw at least three other dog owners walking there dogs during our 3 night stay. It was nice having my dog on vacation with me. And for $10 a night it was cheaper then boarding.

I liked: the free shuttle, free parking, the location in Alexandria, the free breakfast, having two tv sets, lots of space in room.

Not crazy about: the cold pool, the lumpy bed, the bullet hole in the window, generally older decor, old smell, slow elevators.

It's a three star hotel so it was just about what I expected overall. Not great, not terrible. It was ok.

Very Comfortable Accommodations

from A TripAdvisor Member
We have stayed at Washington Suites-Alexandria twice on visits to the D.C. area, and are going back for a third visit! We were very pleased with the accommodations, as we have had clean, comfortable suites on both occasions. Free parking is definitely a plus, and the hotel staff is very friendly and accommodating. We always stay in suites whenever we travel and Washington Suites-Alexandria is one that we'd recommend very highly!

Fantastic

Really great place. Stayed here in January 2003, my first time in an American hotel and I was amazed by the huge rooms that we were given.

Everything was clean, the staff were friendly and I'd recommend it to anyone.

Great price, great hotel

I stayed here for the July 4th weekend and was extremely pleased with the huge suite I was in. The rooms were very clean, the AC was great, and the kitchenette came stocked with everything you would need to prepare a meal for the duration of your stay. Parking was difficult if you came home past midnight (well the weekend I was there anyway); but then again it is free so many people are going to take advantage of it. The free breakfast consisted of bagels, cereal, muffins...lots of carbs...but that's what I expected so it really was no biggie. The coffee station by the elevator was a nice touch to grab a cup before going to your room (in case you didnt feel like brewing some in your room). They also offer a free shuttle to the Metro and to the mall nearby, which is an added convenience. Overall I had a great experience and I plan on staying there everytime I visit the DC area. For the great ptice I got on expedia, it's definitely worth it!

Enjoyed the Washington Suites Alexandria very much!

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at the Washington Suites Alexandria 12 nights. We especially enjoyed the separate bedroom with its own television so my son could watch his own programs. The housekeeping staff was very efficient and would even do our dishes when left in the sink. We saved lots of money by using the full kitchen and cooking our evening meals. The hotel offerered everything we needed and the staff was very pleasant.

Top Local Tips for Alexandria

Metro The Metro system is the best way to get around in DC, particularly when you don't know where you are going. It is easy to navigate and a full-day pass is $6.50, though you can't use them until after 9:30 a.m. It is very clean and we felt quite safe.

Proximity to attractions - not really It's not that close to the main attractions (Old Town or getting to the DC area), and public transportation is dangerous to this hotel...seedy neighborhood around the hotel. Do not recommend staying at the Washington Suites Alexandria at all, and especially if you do not have a rental car. A local person said at night, the area isn't good for walking back from the Metro station.

Travel from Reagan Airport Take the subway blue line to Van Dorn Street, and the hotel shuttle will pick you up. It is a life-saver during rush hour and faster than a taxi.
