Loved It!!

from LLawler
I visited Red Mountain Spa over the 4th of July week! It was recommended to me by friends who have been going for several years. My husband sent me for my birthday and I enjoyed it tremendously!!

First of all, take notice, this is an ADVENTURE SPA!

I was in the newer villas, in a king suite! My suite was incredible! Very large, modern, comfortable bed and huge marble/granite bath with tile shower and large soaking tub. I also had a fireplace, 2 closets, and patio facing the canyon! They had already begun renovating the rooms in the cottage buildings, with updates, like larger baths, tile floors, updated furnishings.

The food was fine-yes, it is healthy SPA CUISINE and there is plenty of food at each meal. I became acquainted with many new healthy foods and snacks and have brought some of those recipes home!

I especially enjoyed the numerous yoga classes, all classes encourage every participant to go at their own pace.

The morning hikes are the highlight of each day, everyone should participate, I do not get up early, normally, but at RMS, I did not want to miss those cool, beautiful mornings or the hikes.

I spent 2 hours in the spa at night after dinner, and had absolutely fabulous massages, every evening with Tyler-he was fantastic! The spa is fairly small, but my massages, mountain glow scrub were great! The large, new spa is scheduled to open late this fall.

I loved the property, the incredible views, and my villa suite-everyone was most accomodating to me! I especially enjoyed the walks around the property in the early mornings and after the spa at night. NO HUMIDITY!!
The afternoons were warm, but not bad, considering it was July.

I have vacationed at many world renowned resort spas, and rate Red Mountain Spa as one of my favorites-future guests should realize when they review the website for RED MTN, that it is very, very nice, but is not primarily a glittering, luxury spa, but, a beautiful spa in a gorgeous canyon setting with a variety of accomodations, spa cuisine, sunset canyon hikes, great hikes and comraderie amongst the guests. I look forward to returning!

disappointed with misrepresentation

from A TripAdvisor Member
Sadly, my husband and I were disappointed with the spa. We planned to stay for a week but left early because we found the accomodations to be modest, at best. They were more like a motel than a spa lacking even a light in the shower. In addition, we were frustrated with the 'nickel and dime' attitude - charging for soda, leaving envelopes in the room to tip housekeeping, etc. For a spa to tout "choose your own adventure," it seemed that all activities came at a premium additional cost.
Admittedly, the views were magnificent and the hikes truly a great adventure, but if you are looking for something beyond scenery - it seems that better places exist or at least ones that provide ammenities comparable to the cost.

Affordable, relaxing spa vacaton

from A TripAdvisor Member
I spent four days at Red Mountain Spa which was not enough. There is so much to do: hiking, classes, spa treatments, and relaxing that I would have liked at least another day. I was very impressed by the staff at Red Mountain Spa with the exception of the spa staff that scheduled appointments. I called to pre-book treatments and was told it was not necessary that there are always plenty of openings. Unfortunately we were not able to get the treatments we wanted. Pre-book your treatments in advance.

Each day there are 3 different levels of hikes (Trekker 1 easiest), (Trekker 2 moderate), and (Trekker 3 difficult.) Even if you do the same level each day the hikes are varied so you will see different scenery. We had great guides on both of the hikes we went on. They were friendly and were accomodating to different fitness levels of the group. The hikes start at 7 am and typically end around 10 am. Unfortunately many of the fitness classes start around 10 so you either miss the hike or walk into the class late.

I've read mixed reviews about the food but I thought it was very good. It was healthy but it tasted good.

We took quite a few of the classes there. The yoga classes were very good and the abs class was good too. I noticed that pretty much everything starts late, no one seems that concerned with time.

This is not a luxury spa but it is very nice. I liked that I could go to dinner without getting dressed up. Many people went in robes but I wasn't quite that relaxed. It's also big enough to have things to do but small enough that you can walk everywhere quickly.

I would definitely return to Red Mountain. The scenery was beautiful and the resort was very enjoyable.

Super spa and scenery

from KimboAlexandriaVA
My sister in law and I had a great 4 days here in one of the villa suites (fireplace, big comfy beds). The shower was amazing (floor and walls made of smooth stones). Absolutely gorgeous scenery, weather, atmosphere. A couple of the spa treatments were not the best I've ever had but they weren't bad. Went to a neat NY City Ballet work out and a cleansing ritual evening session. Missed the mudbath at the pool one afternoon but it sounded fun. Only thing missing was help finding a stable to go riding. They had cancelled a partnership with some stable and couldn't recommend another. Super place. Am thinking about buying a timeshare. Thanks Red Mountain Spa!

I understand the good and bad reviews

from kfrazier
As title indicates, I now understand the good and the bad reviews. The setting is spectatcular, and the morning guided hikes are great. It is important to pick the correct level of hike for your fitness level. I just cut short a planned two week stay here for two reasons. One, the place is surrounded by wildfires and they canceled hiking. I'm here to hike more than anything. Also, the first week of my stay I was part of an offical Detox program. It's a new program for Red Mountain, and while it's good, they still have some glitches to work out. The second week I was on my own to continue eating detox style and getting my detox smoothies made each mealtime by the kitchen staff, and the process of having to do so almost completely ruined the mellow state I had achieved as a result of my first week here. So, between the canceled hiking and the daily dining drama, I needed to leave early. In a nutshell,

PROS

Location. If you love beautiful hikes and desert scenery, this is a great place.

Spa. Small but all services I had, which was many, were good. Also, there's a fabulous acupuncturist, Pat, who I saw five times. And Cari in the spa gives the best doggone aromatherapy facial ever.

The new villa rooms are great. The older, standard rooms are just fine. Mine ( a standard room) had a great view of the mountains and the lava fields. For my own purposes, I'd just as soon go with a standard room and save the extra dough for spa treatments.

CONS
While the cost of this place is pretty good, they charge you for all extras (even charging $10 each way for a six mile trip into the local art village).

Some of the staff could be nicer, while others are fantastic.

For me, trying to get my special dietary needs met the second week(in keeping with the detox program of theirs I'd started the first week) darn near ruined the whole experience.
ts a great group of guests, the food is pretty good, and the hiking is
In summary, though, I bet I come back. In general the place attrac great.

Fun and beautiful getaway

from Essie16
Red Mountain Spa is a fun way to rejuvenate or jump start a diet or fitness plan. I recommend it to people who are looking for something a little more active than the typical spa where you sit around and get seaweed wraps all day. I had a deluxe room, which was was spacious very comfortable, with a king bed, small sitting area, and walk in closet.

The morning hikes are a fabulous way to start the day and there is a challenging option for everyone. They offer at keast 4 or 5 fitness classes a day and all of the ones I tried were a lot of fun (especially "aqua asana" aka yoga in the pool), although they could have perhaps been more challenging.

The setting is very pretty, with lots of hammocks and deck chairs if you want to while away the afternoon with a book or just nap. I loved the spa treatments I got -- a regular massage and a hot stone massage. The spa treatments are not included in the room rate, which worked out fine for me since I didn't want to get treatments every day anyway.

The food was only okay. Morning breakfast, late morning "hikers snack" and lunch are buffet style. Dinner is sit down, but there is unlimited salad and soup. The good part is, there is plenty of food so unlike some places you will not feel hunger pangs. Most of it wasn't bad for healthy food but it wasn't anything special either.

This isn't luxury, but given the price and the beautiful setting, it is a trip well worth making.

The Hiking is Amazing

from A TripAdvisor Member
My sister and I just came back from a fabulous Memorial Day weekend at Red Mountain Spa. Work permitting, we take 3-4 short spa vacations a year, so I guess you could call us "spa junkies". She insisted that I write a review after reading some of the less than favorable ones here. We first heard about RM from a fellow guest we met at Cal-a-Vie (thank you Erika from NY) who said that the hiking was the best she had found anywhere. She also said it was a great value for a "budget spa". On both counts, we agree whole heartedly! The hikes are unbelievable because they cover so many types of terrain, and are so varied and challenging. The guides instinctively knew how much to push the groups of 8-10 mostly strangers; the views were to die for; and each hike was better than the day before. I started with a Trekker 1 the first day, which was easy enough for a novice but still included petroglyphs (ancient carvings on the rocks that reminded me of the famous caves in France) and stunning scenery. The next day we tried the Trekker 2 to "the desert tank" and it pushed us to our limits, but what a sense of accomplishment 5 miles thru lava fields, dry washes, and climbing slickrock gave us. The next day we did another Trekker 2 called "Red Mountain" which had us hiking gradually up thru the trees until we reached another stunningly panoramic view. I could go on and on about the hikes, but I also have to rave about the food (healthy, filling, and tasty!), the spa treatments (thank you Jennifer for the fabulous massages), and the staff. Everyone was helpful, and even the new employees took the time to find out answers to all of our questions. Plus it is coed, probably about 30% men when we were there, so it wasn't your typical spa clientele. My only advice is - schedule your spa treatments in the late morning after hiking, or mid-afternoon (before dinner). We had scheduled evening massages, thinking it would help us drift away to sleep. Instead, we were always so full from dinner that we had to take a long walk before we went to the spa, and even then it was hard to lie on our stomachs! But that was our fault, not RM's! If you have never been to a destination spa, this is a great choice to "break you in". And if you have been to Canyon Ranch, Cal-a-Vie, or other high end spas - you won't be disappointed by RM because they have it all. The only difference (besides price) is that you have to tailor your schedule yourself, rather than getting your schedule from the staff. It is a small price to pay when you add it all up!

wonderful, relaxed stay

from appags
Red Mountain Spa is a delightful, relaxed spot for people looking for
life-style changes. I have been to Canyon Ranch in Arizona, which is
high-energy and highly motivating...but also intimidating. Red Mountain
is perfect for the average person. It is not as large as Canyon Ranch, about 1/2 the size, with a more intimate feel. You are not as isolated,
and morning hikes are a real adventure. Our accomodations are small,
but well-appointed and nicely located. Our view consists of beautiful red mountains! The food is very good, and prepared for the health-conscious.
Dinner is similar to Canyon Ranch; ordering off a menu. All other meals are buffet.
The excercise program is good - not as varied as C.R. - but staff is knowledgable. The Spa services are wonderful, and the massage and
saloon services are at one easy location.
My husband has enjoyed the visit - came with much reservations, but has
enjoyed his stay. Particularily the bike trip to Kayenta (for beginners,
but a nice ride.).

Awesome relaxing getaway

This was the most peaceful place I'd ever been! I visited the Red Mountain Spa in it's off season so it was nice to have my pick of appointments at the spa! Food was great and very healthy.

Okay, but not not my idea of a spa vacation

from detraveler_7
On the plus side, the grounds are very nice and the Snow Canyon State Park is beautiful. I was not bothered by the developments in the area and really only noticed them when I was out for a bike ride on my own one afternoon. The hikes were generally good but I found the huge difference between the Trekker 2 and Trekker 3 hikes to be too vast. The Trekker 2 was not a challenge at all for me and while the Trekker 3 was a good pace, the group moved so quickly that I felt like I could not stop for a photo opportunity on occasion. The area is too lovely not to enjoy at bit. The rooms are ok but not close to the same level as Miraval as a previous commenter suggested. I have been to Miraval on a number of occasions and the two resorts are not in the same class (food, staff, variety of activities, spa and other public areas and the rooms are much better at Miraval but of course the price is higher too). The food varied greatly during my stay at Red Mountain. For the first few days the breakfast and lunch were truly awful and the dinners were ok tasting but tiny and cold. The breakfast never improved much but the last day of my 5 night stay the lunch was good and for the last couple of nights the dinner was better. The dining room staff is young and friendly but not very well trained. The rest of the staff is better but I found it difficult to get a straight answer out of most of the staff. They seemed to tell you what they thought you wanted to hear rather than the facts which left me disappointed when things were not as I anticipated. The spa service area is much too small and it seems that they have halted plans for a change. There is not a sufficient waiting area and the treatment rooms are cramped and too close to public areas. One of the treatments that I had was the Fire and Ice Facial which is a good facial but the esthetician hit me in the head with the chair a few times when she got up or used the sink and she put the lotion bottle on my stomach since there was no other place for it in the room and the loud conversation at the pedicure station just outside the door was really distracting since I heard every word. If you don’t go hiking there are no other included activities in the morning before the stretch classes at 11:00. Immediately after lunch the only activity is a lecture that is a selling opportunity for the health services that are not included in the package. Although they maintain that there are multiple options each hour that was not the case during my stay. I found I had more down time than I expected and since the weather was not great during my stay there was not enough to do. If I had done all of the extra paid activities and had spa services every day I probably could have spent almost as much as I do at Miraval.

Top Local Tips for St. George

May is Beautiful Remember you're in the southwest - very dry heat. While in Ivins in May there was a constant breeze which kept the 88 degree temperature very comfortable. I would think twice before going in the heat of summer (July, August).

Leave business and evening attire at home. No need or reason to dress up. Bring comfortable fitness/resort attire and comfortable shoes. Bring a good pair of hiking shoes, or buy them there...they have a great store at the resort for hiking/climbing attire.

Lunch Ask for a to-go lunch on your last day so you don't have to eat junk food at the airport.
