Another Kimpton Winner

I stayed at the Monaco SLC in Nov. 2004. This was my 3rd Monaco in the US this year. The property is well located, beautifully decorated, & rooms are a little larger than normal. They have a very nice wine reception in the afternoon & excellent service. Kimptons are known for their "un hotel like" restautants & quality. The restaurant in the Monaco SLC is a 5 star but very very pricey. No one from the hotel was dining there. There is a theater across the street & the locals dine there before going to an evening of theater. One draw back, other Monacos I have stayed at had a complimentary business center where I could check email. This one did not. All in all I would stay again though.

It was okay, but not what I expected!

We stayed for 4 nights, service was excellent, everything was really close to walk to, the only one thing we didn't like was the smell of the room, might be because were not use to the dog smell! (we have no pets). We ate at their Restaurant, food was good but kind of pricey!

My friends and I stayed in Salt Lake City over the Thanksgiving Holiday. We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful whenever we asked questions. We were glad to pay the $15 a day for parking, so we didn't have to worry about finding it. The Valets were available 24 hours a day and were quite speedy. We also didn't have to worry about cleaning the snow off of our car. The sheets were really nice and the beds quite comfortable. Our room was really clean although it was a bit small, but that can be expected for an older hotel. The lobby was very warm and inviting. We enjoyed our goldfish who we named Bill.

Snappy decor, TERRIBLE service

This Hotel Monaco has snappy decor, and our room was spacious and comfortable. But, the service was TERRIBLE, especially for a hotel at this price level. When we tried to order breakfast, the phone in our room didn't work. The desk clerk suggested jiggling the cord. It still didn't work. When we finally got through to room service at 9:03 (on a cell phone) they said they'd stopped taking orders for breakfast at 9AM! No effort was made to help us with breakfast, and the phone was never fixed. When I mentioned this at check out, another desk clerk said, "Did you try jiggling the cord? That usually helps."

I just couldn't believe how fabulous the Monaco was for the price we paid. It more than lived up to all the hype, and I just had to video the room before we disturbed anything. It was hard to drag ourselves out into the city!

The dinner menu in the restaurant was prohibitively expensive, but the breakfast was very reasonable - and great food to boot.

A great location too.

We have been to the Monaco in Denver and liked it and the cute dog very much. Therefor we were glad to stay at the Monaco at Salt Lake City. Besides there is no dog the hotel is worth staying there. My husband wants to change our sitting room the way the patterns are in their rooms. We do also appreciate the glas of wine on arriving and the interesting restaurant.

The most fun hotel I have ever stayed

Loved the goldfish idea, the room decorations, cool leopard bathrobes, TravelGirl magazine and the wine and massage hour. The staff were very nice. The most unique and fun hotel I've ever stayed. This place is great. If you want a sterile but fancy place where people wear white gloves (like the Ritz) go somewhere else...like an expensive lodge in Park City. This is a boutique hotel that has character and style. Can't recommend enough.

We stayed at the Hotel Monaco for our anniversary in June 2004. We chose this hotel for its close location to the Capitol Theatre for Phantom of the Opera. This is definitely not a 3 or 4 star property. The room was just so-so, with no special amenities. The room lacked cleanliness. The carpets were spotted and wet in a couple of places. We had to call for towels, only 1 left in bathroom. We ate at the popular hotel restaurant for dinner, Bambara and got horrible service. The food was okay, but waited over an hour for our dinner. We also were not informed when making our reservations that we would be charged $15 per day for parking, in Salt Lake City!

Whenever I travel to Salt Lake City (12+times per year), I stay at the Hotel Monaco. It is a quaint hotel with funky decor and a fabulous restaurant (The Bambara). The hotel offers many cool things such as a lobby area happy hour with free neck massage and treadmills that you can have delivered to your room for a fee. At no cost is the Yoga mats and blocks that you can request in your room so that you can workout with the yoga channel on TV which is on 24hrs. The staff is very courteous and will go above and beyond with special requests. They have gone to the store for me just so I can have peanut butter on my english muffin in the morning! They also deliver a floor fan to my room (most times without me asking), so I can sleep better at night (I need the constant hum). Everything from the cool alarm clocks to the wonderful down-comforters and oriental throws makes this THE place to stay in Salt Lake. I've stayed twice at the Grand America (when The Monaco was sold out), and both experiences were lousy due to bad service and extremely bad food. The only miss at The Monaco is the workout room-very small with only a few different machines.

Disappointing stay in a so called four star hotel. Four star prices with 2 star amenities and accommodations. Small room (Kind Deluxe).
Plumbing problems, which meant anytime we or other patrons in the area were taking showers the pipes would chatter which sounded like someone using a jackhammer next to your bed. The complaint about the noise netted two apologies, two unfulfilled promises of a move to a quieter room and one complimentary breakfast(excellent food) and three nights of interrupted sleep. We were upgraded to a better room the last night of our stay. The pipes still chattered but weren't as noisy. Street noise even on the 7th level was louder than expected. TVs are crap, worse than our ones at home (orange faces, some channels so dark you couldn't make out the image.) No color adjustment available. Daily parking is steep, $15.50. Housekeeping, valets, room service people were good. Good beds and bedding. Good location. Smug, unhelpful front desk. Disappointing stay. Looks like quality and care has slipped since the opening

Top Local Tips for Salt Lake City

Trolley Square Trolley Square offers three fun, delicious places to eat. The Old Spaghetti Factory has great service, a funky decor and delicious food at a low/moderate price ($10 plate)---perfect for families. We've been going there since I was a kid. The Rodizio Grill has an amazing salad bar, a vast array of meats and the service is fantastic. It's a bit pricier ($25 plate) than the Spaghetti Factory and probably better for adults, although I know my kids would love it. The third restaurant is the Hard Rock Cafe, which I haven't been to as of yet.
