Historical Traveller Reviews of Grand America Hotel
The only place to stay in SLC!
from funsandiegoOutstanding but very busy
from Al4travelHotel furnishings are elegant, the pool area is first class (although little mid day shade, and within earshot of nearby traffic noise). The spa services provided for my wife were upscale and very professional, the indoor pool and fitness center well equipped.
The dining area (Garden Cafe) served well prepared food, albeit at very high prices for serving size and ambience (no tablecloths at dinner in a five star hotel).
So, why isn't our review EXCELLENT instead of Above Average?
The Grand America and it's sister Hotel across the street (Little America), are headquarters for nearly every convention in Salt Lake City.
During our stay, 12,000 Barbershop Quartet members and fans were gathered in SLC, creating congestion and delays at almost every location in and near the hotel. In addition, these folks sing in the hallways, on the elevator, in the lobby, by the pool, while dining, and in the room next to us. We were warned that long lines would make checkout a problem, and were glad to have pre-checked out the night before. In the morning, the check out area was totally full of Barbershop folks, still singing their hearts out.
The Barbershop folks were nice people, not offensive in any manner other than failing to realize that other guests might tire of around the clock musical sounds.
We would stay at the Grand America again without hesitation.
Equal to a Ritz
from A TripAdvisor Memberis equal in every way. The gardens in the back of the hotel were cafefully manicured, peaceful and a respite from the usual city hotel environment. I highly recommend this property for business or pleasure.
Grand America a grand disappointment
from ashlandteacupsVery Nice surprise...
from welshboyStayed for 3 nights in the lap of luxury, the biggest bath / tub I've ever seen. As for the super king size bed, well, it was nearly as big as my house back home!
Didn't really want to leave the hotel for the duration of the stay. If I've ever have the money, I'd definitely stay here again
t even check in
from dba74I immediately called the hotel and told them what happened, assuming they would have the van return. Instead they said it would be faster to get the next one "which had already left and should only be about 5 minutes".
25 minutes later (approx 1 hr total) still no van so I called back and suggested we take a cab at their expense (a fairly standard request which I have done several times at other hotels). They put me on hold for about ten minutes and denied my request, insisting their van would be there soon.
At this point I told them I wanted to cancel my reservation and you can guess what they did next-- tried to charge the full amount anyway! I was finally able to cancel without charge, but their service was so absolutely abysmal that I felt others should be warned.
Great Service
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe food was poor--actually the food was poor everywhere we went. The concierge thought maybe it was because we were from L.A. and expected too much. We only had breakfast, but the eggs were dried out and cold. The waffle was doughy. The blueberries were small and two days too old. The strawberry in top of the meal was rotten on one side.
The room was beautiful. We had a view of the city on the 23rd floor. The best view faces the mountain. The city view is the next best. The other two views face the freeway and an industrial part of town.
I would definitely stay here again. I'd go by tripadvisor's rec. for food. The concierge also rec. Cucina Toscana--the food was too rich. Sunday was difficult because most places served brunch and then dinner--no lunch.
WoW!
from aptbroker1nt get any better!
from A TripAdvisor MemberOne of the Best!!
from gbraxtonBTW, some great golf in SLC area. Highly recommend Soldier's Hollow out by the winter Olympics site. Thanksgiving Point was also fun. Prices are reasonable.
Top Local Tips for Salt Lake City
Restaurants Here are 2 good picks in SLC: Red Iguana - cheap, delicious Mexican food. Get there early or be prepared to wait. Takashi -excellent sushi in a hip setting.
Gateway! Great outdoor shopping and dinning!
Free trolley service to downtown and their new sports arena You can catch a free trolley at the corner, just across the street that takes you to Salt Lake City's "Temple Square", then turns west toward the new Gateway shopping plaza and their new sports arean where the Jazz plays. We noticed that even those who attend the SLC Ballet use this free downtown trolley service. Once you get past the hotel you'll have to pay for trolley service. The "Sandy" trolley goes south past the Grand America toward the subburb of Sandy, while the "University" trolley turns at the corner and goes all the way up the hill to the University of Utah campus, football stadium and the University Hospital. This is a great place to stay for visitng fans whose teams are playing the "Utes".
