Love the 'Old Texas' feel...and only a couple blocks from the Alamo - that makes it all come alive.

I found this hotel on internet, for a wedding anniversary weekend. I was familar with where the motel was, but had not been in before. The outside, desk area & dining area of hotel was nice, location was great-centrally located. Most of staff very helpful & friendly, desk clerk could have more courteous at check in and check out-(same person.) The pictures of room on internet were not very accurate, they showed a very nice cozy room with big overstuffed leather chair with ottoman and western decor. The room we got was fairly clean, but with older furniture, much like you would find at Motel 6, the lampshades were all barely hanging on and crooked. Coffee pot just sat on very little table about knee level. The room smelled of mildew as soon as we walked in and couldn't even cover with perfume. No ash trays provided, in confirmed, smoking room, no trash bags in trash cans, only two bath towels provided, no sugar or cream provided with coffee ( didn't catch unitil I was ready for my coffee the next morning, could see where walls had stains and also patched repair work on walls. There was no microwave or fridge. hairdryer was old and just laying on counter top like someone left behind. Commode overflowed. Had to call maintenance twice for ashtray & mildew smell. They were very prompt and sprayed carpet with a liquid deodorizer which then made carpet very wet and streaked, but did cover the smell. Later they returned to plunge the toilet. It was very obvious the hotel was old. You could not see television from sitting area, very cramped. Had to watch TV from edge of bed which was less than a foot away from TV. Needless to say I was very disappointed with my room. The staff did try to please when asked. Valet very courteous. I think we will find somewhere else to stay in the future. I would not stay at the Gunter again nor would I recommend to family or friends. ( the room was probably just as nice as any mid range buget motel, but twice as expensive!!) So much for romantic!

Gunter Hotel Dirty and Disorganized

Stayed here for a convention. Amenities on website included a microwave and refrigerator. Neither was provided. The desk clerk, when asked about it, said there has never been either in the rooms. Housekeeping was poor. A huge stain on the comforter on the bed. Never used it anyway, since it weighed about 8 pounds. Returned to the room one day and found the housekeeper wiping down the bathroom sink and counter with the dirty, used towels we had left on the floor and no cleanser. None of the housekeepers we met spoke any English at all. A request for a second ice bucket required charades, and initially brought us only the ice bucket top! Two bottles of water were provided with glasses on a table. In tiny printing on an otherwise large label, it indicated a $2.00 charge would be added to our bill if we were to drink a bottle. Many attendees never noticed it and were surprised when told. Several had already drank the water, thinking it was free. We thought this was sneaky. At one breakfast, we specifically asked for skim milk. When it arrived, I said, "this is skim, right?" I was assured it was. A sip clearly indicated it was not. I sent it back, and the waiter returned to tell me they didn't have any skim milk that day. Many of us complained we did not get the wake up calls we'd requested. Pretty hotel, if not very clean, and located close to area attractions, but would not stay here again.

Enjoyed Stay

My wife and I stayed at this beautiful and historic downtown hotel Sept 1-6, 2004 and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. It was within walking distance to all the downtown points of interest ( The Alamo, Riverwalk, Hemisphere Park, and Imax theatre.) The staff was friendly and helpful. I found the hotel to be very clean, fitness room - excellent, outdoor pool - okay (5 ft deep) with small hot tub. We ate breakfast at the Gunter Bakery 3 days - excellent. Try the Sconces! We paid around $82 per night including taxes. We will certainly stay there again!

PS. Highly recommend joining Starwood Reward program.

I was disappointed that the hotel was not right on the water, since at the time I booked it it stated "on the riverwalk". It's only 2 1/2 blocks away. But I really wanted to be 'on the walk'. But, once I arrived I decided to make the best of it.

On the first day, someone tried to barge into our room. Scared us to death. We asked "Who is it?" but no answer. Since we have the security bar locked, they could not get in. Once they stopped, we looked in the hall and no one was to be seen. We notified security who promptly did a "lock down" and investigation. They found out that it was a maid trying to clean the room, but forgot the 'protocal' to knock first and announce who you are, then repeat.

For our trouble, they offered us free parking and a key to the 12th floor for a free continental breakfast each morning. So we were somewhat satified...but you wonder if their story was true. It's easy to blame a maid. And she was not only very strong for forcing the door so hard, but quick to get her and her cart out of site in a matter of seconds.

The walls are very very thin. You can hear every word of every conversation in the rooms next door as well as the hallways. The doors are heavy, so you hear slamming at all hours of the night.

Breakfast buffet was very expensive and not great. The only thing worth the trip down the elevator is the ommettes.

The bed is very uncomfortable and the pillows are even worse. There were strange floaties flying around the room. Not sure if it was dust or down feathers.

So for the price. You get get much better.

We recently spent one night at the hotel. Our room was a queen-non/smoking. It really was the size of a large closet. I was very disappointed because of all I had heard about it. I must say the mattresses were top notch. The best part of the hotel was the lobby. The walls of the room were very thin. About mid-night, I had to open the door and ask the people in the hall to please quiten down. Also, we could hear the slamming of all doors. Would not be my first choice of a hotel in San Antonio again. The hotel definitely was not worth the price.

Great stay!

Awesome hotel lobby - rooms were very nice, staff was very attentive - pool area could use some work - workout room good - close to Riverwalk - trolley stops right outside of hotel. Parking pricey - public lots right across street were much less expensive.

Good price, Great Service

Very friendly, great effort to make everyone happy. I'll be back. Only a short walk to the riverwalk. Bakery attached to hotel has great food and pleasant atmosphere.

A very nice hotel

I liked this hotel because I was very centrally located and a Block from the Riverwalk and a trolley ride away from the Market... great location.

The lobby makes you leap back in time, very well preserved... it has a lot of character and makes you feel the "grandeur" of the era.

The rooms were clean overall. I found 1 tiny stain on one of the pillows (I guess im picky) but i just didnt use that pillow and they had extra pillows in the room.
The bathrooms could use a little updating if you compare them to the room itself, but for the age of the hotel, you cant expect big bathrooms. It was just basic. They were clean, but just small.

The staff was very accomodating, I reserved 2 rooms and the internet service I used (Hotwire) assigned King beeds, I needed double beds and they accomodated my request, even thought I asked them right that morning I checked in.

Parking is expensive, 14 a day, but I just stayed for one day, so I paid. You can park around the corner for half of that.

Overall, I would stay there again.

The hotel is quite average.

I spent two nights at the Sheraton Gunter hotel a week ago. For a historic hotel, it was in good shape. However, the hallway carpets need to be cleaned thoroughly. The swimming pool and Spa are a joke. The pool and spa are very small for a hotel of this calibre. Housekeeping was delayed and we had to make two phone calls just to get the room serviced. The hotel lacks a warm atmosphere towards its guests. On a positive note though, the room service was very commendable, the breakfast was on time and just as we had ordered it. The bed is also very comfortable. I dont think I would chose this hotel if I was to visit the city again.

Great Service At Gunter

I stayed at the Gunter for one night at the end of July. I got a good Internet price on the hotel. It's a older downtown hotel.

I signed up for the Sheraton preferred customer program before checking in--it's free. I was assigned my room preference--a smoke-free room with two double beds. It was a very quiet floor and the beds were soft and comfortable.

I received excellent, polite, and quick service from the desk and from housekeeping. Housekeeping promptly brought us extra coffee when we called it.

I did not use the exercise room or swiming pool, but I did notice a family enjoying the swimming pool and whirlpool on the evening that I arrived.

I didn't use the valet parking at the hotel. Instead I parked overnight on the street. It's free from 6 pm to 8 am, and in the morning, I parked at a lot that charged $3 a day, but no in and out privileges.

Top Local Tips for San Antonio

Riverwalk We enjoyed the Riverwalk but found that some of the best places to eat were not there. Our best meal on the Riverwalk was a lunch at Joe's Crab Shack. It was nice walking around shopping and stopping in different bars at night but eat somewhere else first.

River boat ride It may be cheesy, but I strongly recommend the the river boat ride along the Riverwalk. Lots of fun.

Visit the market in the morning for B-fast Breakfast tacos at Mi Tierra. The waitresses have to wear silly outfits, but the tacos are unbeatable.
