Disappointed!

We recently chose to celebrate our anniversary, and made our reservations well in advance as it was a holiday weekend. We were very disappointed with the accommodations as the hotel was under renovation and they failed to advise us at the time of check-in. The hallways had virtually no air conditioning, the carpet was not not tacked down in places, their was wet paint on the walls, we were unable to cool down the room, and the mattress must have been at least 10 years old (very uncomfortable). Although we addressed our concerns at check-out, we do not believe we were compensated in a manner attributable to a 4 star hotel.

The service at this hotel was the best I have seen in years. If you wanted something - they got it for you & fast. Nice room & decent rate. This hotel is close to the action & is affordable. I enjoyed spending my honeymoon here.

I was very pleased with my stay at La Mansion
May 11-15. I had a "courtyard" view room (actually street view). My room was beautiful with heavy Spanish style furnishings. In addition to the king bed and huge desk, there was a sofa-bed and an overstuffed chair. Lots of lamps for good reading light. Location was perfect for walking to any tourist attractions and restaurants. Service was very friendly and one of the doorman is a master of name recognition. The restaurant is elegant. There is a beautiful breakfast buffet every morning.

My son and I went for a week long trip to San Antonio. La Mansion Del Rio was the high light of our trip. The hotel was beautiful and the service from all of the employees was the best. The rooms were beautiful and the hotel had a peaceful and serene feeling about it. I will go again..... It was one of the nicest hotels I have ever stayed at.

Had some problems!

We were there unfortunately days after their San Antonio Spurs won the basketball national championship. Booked our reservation months before and never dreamed this would be the one of the busiest days down on the riverwalk. As we arrived that busy, hot Wednesday in June 2003 we were greeted by millions of adoring basketball fans..everywhere. Upon checking in at the front desk, we were informed that a river parade was soon to begin and the team was being honored. OK with me except come to find out there was nowhere where we could relax, have a bite to eat and perhaps take in some of the riverwalk excitement. They had the entire river view restaurant/bar reserved for others that paid a gigantic fee just to be there next to the river. There was nobody sitting at the bar in the restaurant so we sat down, ordered and drink and were politely declined as we did not have reserved status. Asked what had been planned for the reserved guests of the hotel in respect to food etc and were told basically, "tough luck." Ended up ordering a cold overpriced meal from room service which took forever to have delivered...I suppose other hotel guests had same dinner dilemma. Walking to another restaurant at that dinner hour was not an option because of the wall to wall people everywhere. Also, overpriced hotel parking. Open air hallways are hot!! Room small but clean and quaint. Just don't feel as if hotel took there paying guests needs in mind at all during that busy time of basketball championship and because of that I'll give my business to another hotel next trip.

Gem of the River

I was fortunate enough to spend three days/two nights at La Mansion during Memorial Day Weekend 2003. The hotel was beautiful and the service was top notch. Would recommend to anyone!

The hotel was Beautiful. Very well decorated, the pool area makes you for get you are in the city. The bed was so comfortable, like being hugged. The view was magnificant. I wouldn't recomend bringing children, there are alot of things to do on the water way, but for adults only. The only gripe I has was every thing that was in your room cost . The bar area and snacks in your room have sensors on them so when you pick up the candy bar it charges it to you room. A 50 cent candy bar was $ 3.50. It gave the impression that dont touch it may cost ya.

Give It A Chance!

I stayed at the La Mansion Del Rio last year for my anniversary. Living in Austin and being approximately 1 hour from San Antonio I vcan guarantee you I have been to San Antonio alot and this is the most romantic hotel I have been to in that beautiful city. I relly do not understand what the complaint is about noisy revelers when you are on the River Walk in a busy downtown metropolis (Duh?). I had absolutely no problems with this hotel, in fact when my husband gave our name to the valet he wished us a Happy Anniversary without even being told! The entire staff did this from the moment we arrived to the moment we left.
The attention to detail was bar none. If you are looking for a romantic weekend in downtown San Antonio-this is your place.

P.S. Their breakfast buffet is to die for!! Buy some jam to take home-you won't regret it!

Skip La Mansion! UGH!

If your into 90 degree hallways, and SUPER noisy streets below, then La Mansion is for you! My wife and I went there to spend a romantic 2nd anniversary. I requested the quietest room they has so we could really relax.. he promised to upgrade us (to a river side suitte) once we got there if possible... once we arrived to San Antonio, the hotel looked beautiful! We pulled in and were told the hotel's valet is $25/day!!!!!!!! WHAT!!! Across the street was $6 without in/out rights.
We parked there...

We went in and checked into the hotel, there ws no upgrde, but that's okay they were 'booked' supposedly.. once we arrived on our floor and the elevator doors opened, the heat of the hallway almost knocked us out! It must have been 90-100 degrees in that hallway!! The room thankfully was cool.. small, but not bad. The bed was old, we both leaned towards the middle.

One night the hotel set us up with a bottle of champagne and some sort of chocolates in our room while we were gone (with tequila inside, yuk) so that was a nice surprise.. But trying to get rest in the hotel was another story!!! It's located on a city block, and the traffic outside is unbelievably noisy!! City buses, car alarms, tourists, harleys and the constant partying from hotel guests, made for a sleepness night, 2 nights that is... ugh.

We would not recommend this to someone searching for a quiet restful visit.

Great time here on Fiesta weekend

My husband & I decided to stay at La Mansion on Fiesta weekend. We wanted to be close to the Riverwalk. Everything was fabulous, the staff here will treat you like royalty. We have no complaints and we will definitely come back. We will recommend this hotel to all of our friends and family. Dora & Leo Zertuche

Me and my husband stayed at La Mansion for our honeymoonin August 2002. Our stay was very nice and the employees were verypleasant and helpful. They were there to help accomodate us and make ourstay memorable and this is exactly what they did. We stayed in theambassodor suite and had a balcony over the river. It was very relaxing.Alot of things are in walking distance but things that aren't are just acouple of minutes away by car. The front desk also gives you little cards of driving directions to different attractions(very helpfulas they give directions to and from the destination). There are alot ofrestaurants within walking distance but the first night we stayed in wehad the five star restaurant downstairs bring us dinner. It was very romantic and highly suggested for one on one privacy. Above all it wasthe best hotel we had ever stayed in and happy to say I've madereservations for La Mansion for this summer for ourone year anniversary!

Agree with April 11th Review

I too read the negative comments here before departing on April 16th for a week at La Mansion...I was a little nervous about the hotel but we had a great time, the hotel is definitely the most beautiful on the riverwalk, inside and out, the service was great (the piano bar a real quiet retreat)...the location can't be beat..the restaurant and pool service very good too...and we really took advantage of the concierge who provided directions and any information we needed...just keep in mind that this is a hotel essentially situated in a busy downtown of a major U.S. city, and most of the rooms are located with balconies facing either the street or the river ...so you will have street noise depending on your room situation...also, if you are there during Fiesta, as we were, expect some revellers...my suggestion is you request in advance a quieter room location...I requested a courtyard view so we ended up over the restaurant courtyard, set back a bit from the street...which turned out just fine.

Top Local Tips for San Antonio

Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch A must do, especially with kids. About 20 miles NW of San Antonio.

Dining and Spa No matter what hotel you stay at, there are three things you have to do - have a spa treatment at the Watermark Hotel and Spa, eat at Pesca's or Las Canarias, and have one of Pesca's Margarita's! If you don't do anything else - do those!

Guenther House Pioneer Mills Breakfast Don't miss a scenic walk along the Riverwalk to Pioneer Mills. The breakfast is the best in town for moderate+ costs. The best of the best for scenery, service and food.
