Historical Traveller Reviews of Menger Hotel
A disappointment for our girls weekend away...
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe hotel is rich in history and is supposedly haunted. The decor is original (along with the smell) and quite interesting. There are lots of framed photos with a little history to go along with each of them.
The rooms are quite another story. They need updating in the worst way.
For such an expensive hotel, the room amenities just aren't there. The bed was quite comfortable but there was no coffee maker (which I thought was standard today) in the room. Also, if you are in need of some dermabrasion, the showers at the Menger can take care of this free of charge- Ouch! The windows were absolutely filthy. Old and historic is one thing, dirty is another. The staff at the front desk need to re-vamp there system as it took us a very long time to check-in. Partly because the girl at the front desk had NO idea of each rooms amenities.
We had originally asked for the family suite (which we were told had two baths and slept 7-8), but she told us the hotel didn't have a suite with two baths and the room did not sleep 7-8. The family suite had a king bed as well as a full sofa pull-out, so we had to get two cots to accomodate our party. The lock on the balcony doors in the family suite is VERY unstable. Each time we left the room, a chair was shoved under the knobs for extra security. Check-out was interesting as well. I'm pretty sure the total we were given was not right. The bills that were put under our door were very confusing. There were five of us. One persons bill was $400+, two $200+ and one at .50 . If I revisit San Antonio and want to stay near the RiverWalk I will definitely stay elsewhere.
Just Returned
from A TripAdvisor MemberFor a room built in 1859, we thought it was great! It wasn't tiny or huge, but just right, and OK, the bathroom wasn't anything to write home about, but there was a hairdryer and a shelf onto which to place your things. The furnishings looked like actual antiques, except for the TV armoir, which probably was a reproduction. Would we stay at the Menger again? In a heartbeat!
Historic Hotel, Great Location!
from A TripAdvisor MemberNice House, Poor Service
from david7031In the new lobby, an electronic player piano provides soft music in the afternoons: very nice. Our room in the historic wing was not large, but very nicely furnished with antiques (or faux antiques).
Unfortunately, the service did not meet my expectations for a first-class hotel. Or even a second-class hotel! When we arrived at 11:30 am, our room was not ready, and the front desk told us to check back at 2:00. When we came back (at 2:30), we were told "Well, check-in time isn't until 3:00". There was no attempt (either time) to check for the availability of another room (and there were other rooms available).
When we finally got our (double) room, there were only towels for 1 person and no soap. After 2 days, they brought more towels, but in 4 days they never noticed that there was no soap! We called housekeeping once to request a hair dryer. This was promised ("Right away, sir!"), but never delivered.
The Menger Bar - a replica of the bar in the House of Lords - is optically pleasing and comfortable to visit. It is also very historic: Teddy Roosevelt recruited his Rough Riders there, and Carrie Nation tried to destroy the bar with an axe! But having a very loud sitcom running on the TV just doesn't fit the historic atmosphere at all! In addition, the service seemed more interested in the TV then in us!
The Colonial Room restaurant featured good food and more attentive service. And we also enjoyed eating breakfast outside, on the beautiful patio with a pretty fountain. However, at dinner, one of our party was refused a doggie bag for her steak because "The Hotel doesn't allow any food to be taken off the premises for health reasons." I have never encountered this anywhere else in the United States. (No, this wasn't a buffet...)
I have the impression that the service at this hotel is totally out of control. Sometimes it's good, sometimes not. It's almost as if the management is off on a long vacation somewhere... They really should come back and fix up the service, because with the wonderful House that they have, they could be running a wonderful hotel!
Experience the Class of a Great Old Hotel
from gump14The Menger - The Lady Still has Plenty of Class
from A TripAdvisor MemberNice, but room service was clueless.
from tweisseThet beer came with the caps still on and they weren't twist-offs. When I called room service, they said they had no way to open them and that I should call housekeeping to see if they had an opener. They did not.
Then room service suggested that I take the four bottles down to the bar and have them open them. I said, "I'm getting charged for room delivery, so zI shouldn't have to go all over the hotel to get the beer opened." Anyway, I used an old college trick to get the tops off despite no help from room service. This is a great old hotel and I would recommend it for its great location and Sunday brunch.
t go back

from TexasYokelMusty but not so much run down. Everyone was nice. We did the necessary valet parking and the bellman told us he'd have the bags up in 5 minutes. After 10-15 minutes (we wanted our bags) we called the desk and the manager acted like we were just then ordering our luggage--he took our number. After 10 more minutes I went down to get our bags.
They were over in the corner and I think would have been for quite a while longer. He refused to let me take them but agreed to bring them up with me. The hotel system clock on the tv was 15 minutes early and the bedside clock was 15 minutes late. There were four messages (in Spanish) for a previous guest (?) on my telephone. Didn't try the restaurant or room service.
Top Local Tips for San Antonio
Road Closures Before you get to SanAntonio, definitely contact your hotel and find out if there will be any road closures due to festivals or whatever. Maybe try to arrive early also just keep in mind that once you get in you may not be able to get back out except on foot.
Best Mexican Restaurant: Acenar Go to Acenar! It is on Houston St. Best Margarita's and Mexican food in the area. Slightly upscale compared to some of the other restaurants, but definitely worth the cost.
Great Upscale Tex-Mex Restaraunt We had one of the best Mexican/Tex-Mex meals ever at Acenar. I would have never tried Fish Taco's without a strong recommendation from our waitress, and they were indeed incredibly good. And the appitizer made of some delectible fungus (I forgot the name) was to die for! This is a place I would return to again and again, if I lived here.
