Loved our stay at the Marriott Plaza San Antonio

from A TripAdvisor Member
We just returned from a stay at the Marriott Plaza San Antonio. I was extremely skeptical to stay at the Plaza after reading some reviews posted on this website. I had purchased our stay through Priceline at an incredibly good deal. Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly by the concierge. At the front desk, I gave the clerk our priceline confirmed reservation number (that I had reserved the day before.) She looked up our reservation and found that our reservation had been cancelled, by Priceline (for some unknown reason.) She immediately called the manager who arrived quickly. He instructed her to check us in, and he would call Priceline himself. The manager and clerk were very courteous and professional and took care of the customer first (a rarity in this world.) We then went to our room which was very lovely. The Plaza is under "rejuvination" and they have completely renovated the guest rooms, halls, grounds, and are currently remodeling several conference rooms. The manager said that the hotel remodeling would be completed by the beginning of April. The pool is lovely, very comfy lounge chairs. The grounds are lovely, with exotic birds walking about.

Some extra notes about the hotel. Our room was not only lovely, but very, very quiet. We did not hear any noises during the night (a nice thing as we were vacationing with a two year old and five year old.) Also, a fellow traveller in the parking lot was being assisted by the concierge staff "jumpstarting" his vehicle. They used the hotel's courtesy car (a newer Cadillac.) The two staff members were being extremely helpful to this gentleman, taking care of the jumper cables and getting their hands "dirty" so that this gentleman could get on his way with his family. My husband and I were more than pleased with our stay and plan to return to the Marriott Plaza San Antonio for another visit. Marissa A., Lake Jackson Texas.

I booked this hotel last summer b/c of some of the positive comments I read. However, I regretted reserving a room at the Plaza as soon as we pulled up to the building, which by the way resembles the barracks/dorms at the nearby AF base. The rooms need a serious make-over. For starters, the drapes, furniture, and overall decor is VERY old and tacky. Not at all like what is pictured on their web site. The walls are also thin. My idea of romance isn't exactly hearing the pitter patter of kids & families carrying conversations down the hall. Speaking of hallway, the light comes in under the door, which may not bother most people, but it just added to the overall unpleasant experience. I planned for my boyfriend & I to have a sweet weekend trip at a nice hotel. Instead ended up disappointed and wished we would have picked a nicer hotel along the River Walk for about the same price!

Some positives: I suppose the courtyard is nice, but I wouldn't say it's anything to write home about. The gym area has the essentials also. The water in the pool may be too cold (even during the summer!) as it's surrounded by trees. They also have a nice restaurant (great breakfast) and pleasant staff. I'm not including the front desk clerks, which were quite brash. If anyone should be allowed to have attitude problems, it should be the poor customers stuck in a low rate hotel or risk being charged a cancellation fee.

This hotel has seen better days. My husband and I stayed 2 nights and I was ready to go on the first night. The room looked a hot mess. The first room had a bed that was leaning on one side and the decor was very outdated. The second night we were moved to a room on the sixth floor, a little better but still not worth the money we paid. The staff was rude and very unprofessional, when we complained about the bed, the person at the front desk was no help at all, and her attitude was you’re lucky to get that room. We had to call the receptionist and she worked on getting us into another room. The parking was $14 dollars a day which I thought was ridiculous. I will never stay here again. Don't waste your time or your money there are much nicer places on the riverwalk that are around the same money. This hotel is way overrated. If you don't believe me call the front desk I'm sure you will see what I mean...very unprofessional and rude.

You Get What You Pay For

Booked our reservation on Priceline for a good rate. Arrived to a clean and very nice hotel. The staff was very pleasant and answered all of our questions. The location was good and the Riverwalk was easy to get to. The only comment I have was I felt we were given a room which most visitors would complain about. The room was on the second floor with a view of a gravel roof top and right on the street. We heard cars all night and it was tough to sleep. The room fit the lower cost of the Priceline deal we got. Overall, we were not in the room very much and we were comfortable. Just remember, you get what you pay for.

Good price but a shame about the drapes!

We used priceline to get a good rate for this hotel for a Saturday night stay and on arrival we were impressed with the beautiful courtyard and grounds. The pool was very clean and the free-roaming exotic birds really gave it a great atmosphere. Our room was on the third floor with a view of the self-park lot. I was amazed that when time came to close the drapes they did not fit the window? The lot is lit during the night so is we unhooked the drape at the end of the rod and moved it across as best we could. I asked the desk clerk about it when she asked me if everything was OK with the room and she retorted "Well we are going to replace them soon". Why do they ask if it's obvious that they don't care? I would have made more of a fuss the evening before but with two young kids under 5 then I put up with it. Don't pay full rate for this hotel at the weekends...use priceline and ask for robes and drapes that cover the window and ask for a courtyard view. I live and learn.

What a WONDERFUL Hotel!!

from TheWorldIsOurs
The Plaza is about a five minute walk to the Convention Center/Mall/Riverwalk, is in a safe neighborhood (even at 6 a.m.), and they have someone on staff who will give you a quick ride there on a weekday. The hotel has an incredibly professional, helpful, relaxed, and available staff, providing a nice blend of luxury and comfort. The grounds are beautiful---just as described on their web page--- and there is a complete exercise room with plenty of modern machines. One of our favorite afternoons was spent on their complementary bicycles riding along the Riverwalk, riding through the Hemisfair park (across the street), and riding through the historic mansions one block away.

Less than we expected

Thank goodness, we recieved a deal through regarding this hotel. I would have been highly disappointed if I had paid 4 star prices for a 3 star hotel. This is not a hotel that you just want to lounge around at. Its good for sleeping and thats it. The garden area was just OK. This is not a romatic spot, but I guess could be a good spot if you had children. The room was very hard on the eyes. Green carpet and pink flowering comforters. Being that it was Marriott I was expecting a little more modern/contemporary decor.. zero/zelch in that area. I give KUDOS to the valet attendents. The staff behind the check-in counter should take training courses on customer relations from these guys. They are the ones who made my experience good at the Marriott. It's funny how those who get PAID THE MOST has the LEAST SKILLS when it comes to customer focus.
Again overall it was an average stay for a couple with twins you were looking for a quick romantic getaway.

Good overall experience

The location is ideal... a few blocks from the heart of the river walk and the Alamo (close enough to enjoy, but just far enough away that you don't have to fight the people walking to get in/out of the hotel and parking lot). The room is nicely decorated, modern and comfortable. The pool area is definitely the highlight... it's beautiful with fountains, lush vegetation, and free roaming exotic birds. This is definitely a kid-friendly hotel (the pool never closes and is full of families)... so if you're bringing the kids this is a great choice. The gym is among the best we've seen at a hotel. The staff was very warm with rare exception. My only complaint was the parking... it was a mess. The parking lot is very small and besides not having enough parking spaces it is also very challenging to maneuver a larger vehicle through. They did offer free valet parking when the lot was full and upon check-out I mentioned the parking issues and they removed the $14/night charge from my account... since they made it right I didn't count this against them.

Bad service...Stay elsewhere!

June 30

NOISY ROOM...I was awaken at 6 AM by footsteps overhead. Bangs and booms came from above and in the walls all morning.

Swimming pool - ICE COLD, DARK POOL..."Kiddie Pool" has very slick decorative tile around it. The water was so freezing cold that none of us wanted to swim. (Pool was deserted in late June? Weird! There were no other guests swimming and no staff to be found.) Pool is VERY dark at night....and in that neighborhood - yikes!

AREA - DON'T WALK ALONE....many homeless walking around right outside of grounds. Better to book upstream at the Drury, Westin or other Marriot in a better location. Same rates if you do your research.

Bartender tried to give me change for a $20, when I had given her a $100. Laughed it off when she was corrected.

RUDE DESK CLERK - Marriot messed up my reservation and the desk clerk first tried to blame it on me. After alot of back and forth between her and her manager (that I was not aloud to see), did me the "great" favor of checking me in on my confirmed rate. I got alot of smugness and attitude. And then, of course, she put us in the worst room she could find. (Lovely rooftop view, last room in the hall, etc.)

I got a good rate for this room, but even considering the nice courtyard and courteous bellhops, nothing can make up for the noisy room/bad night's sleep and rude desk clerk. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to my worst enemy and I wouldn't stay here again, no matter what the rate. Do yourself a favor and stay where they appreciate your business, not expect it.

Not a great experience

My daughter and I stayed here in March 2004. The lobby area is beautiful and peaceful. We had a room that faced the courtyard on the 2nd floor, and we were woken up at 4:00 AM by the screeching of the exotic birds. I went to the front desk that morning and asked for a different room. The staff thought I was nuts I think, and they did not extend themselves all that much to help. I was told that the noise would reach us no matter what room they placed us in around the courtyard. We ended up with a room that faced the parking lot. On the next 2 mornings our stay, we were woken up by the loud plumbing noises issuing from adjoining rooms. All in all, this was not worth the $199.00/night we paid for our room. If you are a very heavy sleeper then this is the place for you.

Top Local Tips for San Antonio

Zinc Wine Bar Great, small, hole in the wall wine and champagne bar on Presa! Beautiful, large back patio.

Menger bar I've heard this before, but one thing that I really enjoyed was going to the bar in the Menger Hotel. Even if you can't afford to stay there you can see some of the history of the hotel. Drinks are fairly reasonable in comparison to some other places in the city. Just relax and look around and enjoy your beverage.

Tower of the Americas If you want to go to a romantic dinner while in San Antonio , book a reservation at the Chart House Restaurant (make sure to book a reservation though because there can be up to a 2 hour wait)..its located in the Tower of the Americas and you get to eat dinner while watching the whole city down below.. it's an incredible view and the service is amazing!
