Historical Traveller Reviews of Hyatt Regency San Antonio Hotel
Hyatt Did Not Disappoint
from A TripAdvisor Member
I was a little skeptical about staying here after reading some of the reviews, but I was in no way disappointed. I think the negative reviews were pre-renovation, and I would strongly encourage those people to visit the Hyatt now. In general, you expect quality from the Hyatt name, and quality is what I received. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful, and the room was excellent. The hotel is in a great location that just can't be beat. I booked my room on priceline.com and got an excellent rate. I would highly recommend both priceline and the Hyatt.
Renovations are 5 Star Material !!!
I just came back from a wedding this weekend and stayed at hyatt regency Riverwalk. Unfortunately my normal hotel is Westin Riverwalk since im a starwood preferred guest but owell they were booked! Very Very nice for a change, I love the all leather , deep colors of room, with chrome platinum finish on lamps. It seems as though renovations were just complete less than a month ago,and everything is new, our drawers smelled of new wood finish, room was spotless, great view of atrium which i requested ! Also since an early afternoon wedding away from downtown, i was able to check in early, get a high floor, atrium view, and great customer service. Hey she actually reminded me of my am.airlines fr flyer number and all?? I would highly suggest someone come back out and re evalute this renewed property, in the middle of the action. Prices vary i called to check room rate it was $ 249.00 a nite, and i pay that normally at Westin Riverwalk, but ended up on hotwire.com and got room at hyatt for $ 92.00 with tax, Wow!! Ive stayed here before and wasnt pleased but big difference changes can make! 0 Valet ($18.00) or parking garage($10.00 or more) available across the street, if you want to be in middle of it all you have to spend some money, come on ? Check out their restaurant Chaps ,get belgium waffle this is coming from a professional belgium waffle lover! Im a frequent traveler, and have been here to riverwalk at least 3 times already this year alone! I only stay at nice hotels that suit my needs, theyre normally pricey but worth it, I would stay here again if Westin Rivewalk is booked again! P.S. check out lone star cafe riverwalk next to eckreds , its a 2 story restaurant, and best salmon EVER! County Line riverwalk best peach cobbler ala mode! Take Yellow Rose Carriage Ride around alamo. Last la mansion del rio riverwalk-Not Even worth my money> Its like comparing bellagio las vegas to Circus Circus???
Hyatt -Keep your hands on your pocketbook.
Boyfriend has business going on in San Antonio so we go quite often. We stayed at the Hyatt Thurs., June 16. They are in the process of updating their rooms, which is well overdue. Our room was large but unimpressive and it faced the atrium. The down side to this is you had to keep the drapes completely closed because the glass elevators allowed the passengers to completely view our room. Upon checking in you are handed a note telling of the renovations and the possible noise. We did not experience any noise from the construction but we did hear the elevator movement all night. The hot tub and pool are located on the on the roof so they are fairly small but provided a nice view of the city. We did not partake of the pool because there were so many loose children. Sorry, but just because I like children and have some of my own does not mean I want to spend my down time entertaining yours! The Hyatt had a nice large gym with equipment in good condition. The major down fall to the Hyatt is the value. This stay the room was $150 plus the $18 charge for parking and of course, all plus tax. The room service charge for a two egg, one meat, one starch, and one bread breakfast without coffee was listed at $16.00, then they charged you $2.00 room service fee and added 18% tip to the bill. Needless to say the Denny’s around the corner was packed. Even the soda machine next to the ice machine was ridicules, $2.25 for a can of soda! We returned to San Antonio the next week on Saturday and the hotel we prefer was once again booked so boyfriend went back to check the Hyatt and was told they had a convention and now a standard room was $259! So, for $100 less we stayed at the Hilton on the Riverwalk.
I stayed here because I LOVE the Hyatt Resorts. I was told about construction when I checked in but it was never a problem. The room I stayed in was brand new and so beautiful! The staff was wonderful and very friendly. Parking was 21.00 per day for valet or 15.00 if you park in the garage across the street and bill it to you room. However we parked in the same garge and just paid 10.00 cash per day. The location was perfect. Right in the middle of the riverwalk, so it was easy to get to the shops and resturants. The Alamo is across the street and very easy to walk since you walk under the streets and up some stairs. I would recommend this hotel.
Just stayed there this last weekend (July 16-18), I had called in advance to request a non-smoking king. Got there, and all the rooms they had were smoking, they offered some non-smoking room with a murphy bed, I DONT THINK SO!. After 20mins of back and forth, a non-smoking room finally appeared. Went to my room, carpet and furniture was stained, and the room smelled. Oh yes, forgot to mention, they are doing very loud construction on the whole building, and it starts at 8AM (yes on the weekends too). Construction wont be over till the end of September.
NOT THE BEST BUT WAIT AND SEE...........

I agree with some of the negative comments..the Hyatt SA isn't the best looking hotel around. I am a strong advocate of S.A. and I sometimes walk the downtown area to see what's up and coming...well to my surprise, the Hyatt San Antonio is undergoing a 16 Million Dollar renovation. It should be completed in late summer of 2004. I am so glad to see this happen...the Hotel is well over 20yrs old and hasn't been renovated, well extensively, since it opened. I apologize to those people who did not enjoy your stay while visiting S.A., however, give them a few months and you will see a brand new, sophisticated hotel. I promise you!!! You won't be disappointed.

I stayed at the Hyatt for business in May, and I think it is a well run hotel. Excellent service, and nice rooms with a great location. I travel a lot and am fairly picky, and I have no complaints. The food from room service was OK, nothing to brag about. The service from the front desk on was very good, and I was especially impressed with the bell staff. I'll stay here again.
Great Hotel on Riverwalk
I had a great experience at the Hyatt San Antonio. I had read mixed reviews and had looked at several hotels. I am very glad I chose this one! Don't be deceived by the menion of an "extension of the Riverwalk"; the hotel does have it's own waterfalls, etc. in the lobby, but the actual Riverwalk is right outside the door. My room had a view of the 16 story atrium, and I could watch the glass elevators going up and down and could also see the Riverwalk. It's about 1 block to the Alamo and the Rivercentre Mall. I had thought about taking a tour, but the concierge suggested that everything is in walking distance, and he was right. Very helpful staff. Room was plenty big, with a king bed, TV, and work desk and was decorated nicely. Don't spend the extra money for valet parking - the garage is literally across the street and seems to be a safe area. About a 1 minute walk with plenty of parking. The breakfast buffet at Chap's is excellent (try the belgian waffle!).
Nice, but not a 4 star

I recently visited in late April for the Fiesta weekend. When arriving, my room was already paid for and when asking that I had a "river front view" which was previously made through my reservation, I was informed it would be $30.00 more a night. I'm now paying $310 a night. I wanted the view and agreed. When arriving in the room, it was quite the disappointment. First the TV only has about 10 channels, (no basic cable) the coffee maker is for one cup (literally, you put one paper cup on the plate) and the comforter is basically a thick sheet. The pillows are the size of a car pillows and the glass window that looked over the street on river, seemed unsafe for small children. When going to pool area to relax and enjoy a cool drink, there wasn't such a thing. One small pool, one cloudy jacuzzi and no pool bar. I believe that with the name such as the Hyatt, there should have been more attention to such details, especially when your paying for class. I will be traveling to San Antonio for a reunion in October and the Hyatt will not be a place where I will spend my money.
Overall I enjoyed my recent stay at this hotel, the purpose of which was to attend a conference. A regular room was not available upon check-in and so I was given a room with a pull down (Murphy) bed. I was offered the opportunity to change rooms on the second day of my four day trip but declined. To compensate for the slight inconvenience they gave me a breakfast buffet voucher. The hotel was clean, housekeeping service was fine and most of the staff I encountered were friendly.
They advertise an upcoming $16 million renovation and I would expect that, after this is completed, they would be deserving of a 5 star rating. They're not in the same league as some of the Hiltons or Intercontintentals I've stayed at but they have a great location on the Riverwalk and I'm a sucker for those glass elevators.
Top Local Tips for San Antonio
Al fresco dining is crowded... plan ahead!
Restaurants start getting busy at 5p for dinner... absolutely nuts by 7pm. Plan on eating very early or very late. Watch your stuff if you have tables on the side of the river... pedestrian traffic is very heavy.
Hyatt will gaurantee connecting rooms for you in advance if you have children 12 and under in your group and you have multiple rooms.
Best hamburger in San Antonio
Visit Chris Madrid's, a local burger joint in northwest San Antonio (take either I-10 west of downtown or US 281 north of downtown and exit Hildrebrand Avenue. Go right (from 10) or left (from 281) and take it to Blanco and turn south. Address is 1900 Blanco Road, San Antonio, TX 78212. As of this writing (June 2007), Blanco is closed to southbound traffic, but there are detour signs through a residential area, and you will be able to (eventually) turn north on Blanco. This is not within walking distance of the River, nor on the downtown Trolley system, but is well worth the drive.
