They tried hard to make it "cool" which some people might like but it was so dark! I had a hard time reading anything because the lighting was intentionally dim. I didn't like it. The service was not exceptional either. Good location. I have to young children and would NEVER take them to this hotel!!! We had a corner room and the street noise was awful.

Very good location on the riverwalk or close to it. Very nice view from the room.

We stayed at Hotel Valencia almost a year ago, and you would think you would forget most of it by now, but we haven't. It was one of our most enjoyable stays anywhere. Beds were comfy and homely. The interior design was fantastic. We actually are in the process of remodelling our bathroom, and are using some of the same concepts. Guest services was very accommodating, and the hotel is in a perfect location. Once you walk downstairs you are on the river walk. Couldn't have asked for a better stay.

Fit perfect!

Im a 23 year old musician from the Houston area. My gilfriend and I wanted to get away for a weekend, so we chose San Antonio. I surfed around on the web for hotels and came across Valencia. It looked like something i was into so i made reservations. After i made the reservations i read this website. I got alittle concerned with the reviews, but went to San Antonio with high hopes. Well all of those hopes were met!! From the second i stepped foot out of my truck, i was very happy!! The service was great. Granted, I didnt order room service, so i cant speak for that. I highly recommend this hotel. I felt very welcome and that isnt very typical when your young at hotels in this range. Tried it, Loved it, Wish i was still there!!!

We were ROBBED BY THE HOTEL STAFF

from A TripAdvisor Member
At first this hotel was nice...but after someone on their staff stole stuff our of our room and they did nothing but offer us breakfast and stuff from the mini bar (THAT THEY CHARGED US FOR LATER) I am sorely disappointed with this hotel. I would not recommend ANYONE to stay here. Go to a Holiday Inn Express atleast they have a pool and a hot tub. The rooms are great but the staff is terrible and untrustworthy, even their manager lied about charging us for things he specifically said would be on the house.

Much Better than Anything else in SA

from A TripAdvisor Member
I was very happy with the Valencia. It is so much better than the worn out hotels you are accustomed to seeing. Great service, from the valet on the front drive, to the waiters in the restaurant. I highly recommend to stay here.

Disappointed- Not Warm, European Cool

from RickT_SA
We wanted a special place to stay for a night to see a show at the Majestic, a half block away, and be on the Riverwalk. This is not the place to stay if there is a show at the Majestic, unless you arrive well before the show traffic. We got caught in the first show traffic (we were going to the 2nd show) and it took forever to close to the hotel. Could not pull up to the entrance because the 4 or 5 valet spots were full and not moving out. Asked the valet about where to go and was ignored. Drove around the several blocks looking for the hotel parking: there is none! They sublease some space that is not marked. Finally we parked in a public lot 2-1/2 blocks away. When we complained at the desk about the parking situation, all we got was "sorry" and a shrug of the shoulders. The room and hotel itself was OK, comfortable bed, etc., but very cool atmosphere. San Antonio has a much warmer personality than this hotel. No point in asking for a river side room, its a very quiet dog leg of the river and not really that visible from the room (at least higher up). Next time, we'll probably try the Gunther across the street. Historic, warm, and interesting.

Pleasantly Surprised!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
I was a little worried after reading some of the reviews of this hotel.
However, I was very pleasantly surprised by the attentiveness and professionalism extended to me during my stay. I have to admit that the valet staff is incompetent and rude, just as previous reviewers have noted. Fortunately, I was prepared--we parked in the covered garage 1/2 block away for $6/day, which was MUCH more economical than $25/day for valet. The police station was right next door, so I actually felt safer with my car there and my keys in my pocket!! LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION--the Valencia is close enough to the action that you can walk there in 5min or less, but far enough away that you can easily have a quiet romantic vacation if that is what you are looking for. The hotel itself was absolutely gorgeous. The modern decor and lavish amenities make it very apparent that no expense was spared in the design of this establishment. The bed slept better than any hotel bed I've ever been in. The food was a little overpriced--but so is every other restaraunt in the area!! The food was good, though. One last word of advice.....if you plan to drink alcohol, you are much better off purchasing your beverages and putting them in the fridge when you arrive. Drinks on the riverwalk are not bad at all, but the hotel prices run in excess of $8/drink. Definitely bookmark this hotel for your next vacation to San Antonio!!

Extraordinary Hotel!!

from DisappointedTexan
My wife & I were needing a getaway and some friends of ours strongly recommended the Hotel Valencia. We drove down for a weekend and thoroughly got away from it all. The location is great (right on the riverwalk) and the room had the most comfortable bed and a quaint little balcony overlooking a courtyard. The lobby lounge was hopping enough that we did not even leave the hotel on one of the two nights we were there! Service was great and we will definately be back.

We've made reservations well in advance, called the hotel twice to confirm it, called them again twice from the airport to inform that our flight was delayed and won't get into San Antonio until 2am, and not to give our room away because we are definately arriving late. We did this to ensure that we're guaranteed a room upon our arrival after reading all the aweful reviews about this hotel, and knew that they will screw-up things if we didn't do so. Apparently, they did; we arrived at the hotel at about 2.30am and learnt that our room was given up.
Obviously, we weren't too pleased with it considering that we have called 4 times, and none of those calls were taken seriously. They almost sent us over to the 'nearby' Emily Morgan Hotel, but after telling the night-audit manager about how incompetant the agents who answered my 4 phone calls were, informing how the hotel is receiving horrible reviews on various websites, and clearly showing our dissatisfaction of the whole situation that could have been avoided if the staff acted upon the phone calls, they finally gave up a no-show reservation, and handed that room to us.

Other no-nos: [1] When we arrived at the hotel, there were two Hotel Valencia staff arguing and cussing at each other and did not even look at us when we were about to go enter the door; a very nice 1st hand experience and impression. [2] Extremely unhappy with agents who answered the calls, both away and from the hotel. They lack customer service skills and puts Hotel Valencia (a member of the Small Luxury hotels group) to a shame. [3] Front-of-the-house staff don't smile and lack hospitality you usually experience in other boutique, 4-star or 5-star hotels.

Despite these experiences, the upper-staff we talked to did all they could to make up to it. The Audit Manager who told us the situation when we arrived went beyond his line of duty to accomodate us that night, and offered a comlimentary upgrade on our 2nd night. The Assistant Front Desk Manager was helpful, took the concerns seriously and offered us complimentary breakfast, and champagne in the room that evening.

Rooms are in excellent condition as the hotel is only 8 months old. The decor is pretty much what you would find in a W Hotel- modern, chic, vibrant, fitted with simple-but-smart, asian-esque furnishings.

Considering Hotel Valencia wanting to be a premier hotel in San Antonio and currently a member of the Small Luxury Hotels group, I don't think this establishment is competant enough if the customer service aspect does not change. If you like a modern, hip hotel but not bothered with the service you will receive, Hotel Valencia would be a good choice.
But for a spoilt, discerning, and frequent traveler like myself who appreciates excellent hotels that has flawless service to match, you might want to consider giving your business to another hotel.

The Valencia is it!

My wife and I recently stayed at the Hotel Valencia in downtown S.A. and it was the very best. We take advantage of the Riverwalk being so close and get away for the weekend. We've stayed at a number of hotels in that area, but they pale in comparison to the Valencia. From the valet guys that help you with your car to the GM the staff there is top notch. Service was excellent, and the hotel is great! The rooms are beautiful and offer a nice break from the traditional hotel room. The lounge, the food, the workout room, the service...everything was the best. I hate dealing with the parking situation in downtown San Antonio, but at the Valencia I didn't have to worry about it - everybody valets. That was very cool. If you're planning a trip to the Alamo City, make sure you plan to stay here. You won't be disappointed!

Hotel Valencia - Fantastic New Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
What a wonderful new concept. This is not your cookie cutter, run of the mill hotel. Loved being so close to the Riverwalk yet far enough to avoid the main attractions. The hallways and rooms are very nicely appointed. Especially loved the corner room. When traveling with my children, the staff was very attentive to the needs of my family. When traveling just with my wife, the bar in the hotel was an excellent place to unwind. The Hotel Valencia will not disappoint and is now our favorite hotel destination in San Antonio.

We reserved 2 rooms (each with 1 king and river views) well in advance, headed to San Antonio, and planned for a wonderful weekend. Upon arrival we were informed they had overbooked the hotel and only had 1 room with 2 double beds available for us. The weekend was intended to be a wedding present for the other couple so this was not an option.
The staff was impolite, incompetent, and unapologetic. They offered little help in making other accommodations and never once apologized for their mistake. We ended up having to stay down the street in another, less expensive hotel. Hotel Valencia only paid for one room that faced a loud street (even though the original reservation was for TWO river view rooms). I have never received such poor service and would highly recommend you stay far away from Hotel Valencia!

Top Local Tips for San Antonio

Four star parking at two star prices If your hotel parking isn't free, look around for a parking garage before you hand over your keys to the hotel. The town parking garages are everywhere, they are well lit, gated and are usually less than what the 4 star hotels charge per day.

Savings Book through the hotel's web site. It will be a lot cheaper.

Mission San Jose Only a 20 minute drive and well worth it!! Great fun for the whole family.
