Dated but Clean and Convenient

My husband and I stayed here the weekend of 10/1/05-10/3/05. I was a little hesitant after reading some of the reviews here. The hotel is dated, but clean and quiet. All of the hotel staff that we came in contact with were friendly, especially the young lady who checked us in - we were allowed to check in early.

The best thing about the hotel is the location. We parked our car in the hotel garage (pricey 14.01 a day) and never got back in it until we left to go home. We walked everywhere we went - we even walked back to the hotel after the Bills/Saints game and it only took us maybe 15 minutes. There is also a water taxi that sits right outside the back door.

Breakfast buffet was good, relatively good selection. The wait staff was friendly, but service was not the best. My husband asked for water and was given orange juice. He ordered sausage and never got it.

I'm not sure I would stay here again, but it was O.K.

A very disappointing trip back through time

We selected the Holiday Inn Riverwalk for our first visit to San Antonio
what on appeared to be a great location---close to the Riverwalk activity and excitement, yet slightly off the beaten track. We learned, the hard way, over our 4 day stay, that location is this hotels ONLY benfit.

A few notable disappointments:
---All the common areas are much too small for the number of rooms which constantly give the place a noisy, unatttractive, dirty and uncomfortably crowded feeling. The place is a throwback to the bare-boned Holiday Inns from the 1960 and 70s, horrible architectually throughout.
---The rooms are cramped and very dated. Frequent lack of hot water and no water pressure for showering after a long day in the 100 degree Texas heat. Slow and surly housekeeping staff.
---Restaurant staff, below that of you local Denny's in terms of attentiveness and attitude. This is compounded by the fact that the hotel's
"Kids Eat Free" policy encourages a sloppy circus atmousphere. The hotel bar with its $6 well drinks, stale air and sad bar staff was no alternative.
---The front desk staff was an absolute horror show in terms of competence and attitude. A combative "guests are an interruption" mood permiated all shifts. The morning we were checking, they failed to make
the 5am wake-up call we had requested, which almost resulted in our missing our early flight.
There are numerous new hotel alternatives along the Riverwalk which appear to be much better alternative. Skip this one unless you are looking for a trip back through time and lots of mediocrity.

Great location!

Stayed at the HI on June 7th-9th, 2005, and had a great time. The hotel was pretty much what you would expect from a Holiday Inn--decent rooms, beds, furnishings. The bathroom, though, had no ventilation or HVAC vent whatsoever, so it was hard not to start sweating getting out of the shower.
All employees that I encountered were very nice, but the check-in time of 4:00 was hard and fast without much flexibility, even though there were surely some rooms ready before then.

The restaurant was good, although I only ate the breakfast buffet since there were so many great places to eat nearby. The hotel is at the end of the Riverwalk, and only a few minutes from the Alamo.

This Holiday Inn has a good location, however in surveying my room and the common areas, management could be more attentive to cleanliness. Common areas and the rooms appeared like they got only did a quick go over by the maids. In addition, some staff do not perform as they should. For example, my wake up call to get ready to go to the airport on my last day never came, despite H.I employee "Elizabeth's" assurance's that it would- ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE FOR THIS ! Good thing that I woke up around the time I had requested or I would have really been angry with this hotel. In addition, the hostess at the restaurant was socializing with another individual when I arrived for breakfast at 6:31 AM- I eventually found a young man that was cordial enough to seat me as I was in a hurry to eat and go. Again- NO EXCUSE. For the money the hotel barely cuts it- you make the choice- no wake up call ? Poor, inattentive service at breakfast- next time, I'll stay elsewhere. Hopefully H.I management sees this post and improves, but I doubt it...

We stayed in this hotel on 4/23/05 and it was a nightmare!!! All the problems started with the front desk receptionist that had an attitude. It was apparent she was getting ready to get off her shift and just wanted to get out of there. We tried to check in early and were told, with an attitude, that our rooms would not be ready until 4:00PM. We decided to go walking so I showed the front desk attendant a map that was provided by them (at the front desk) and asked her to circle the location of the hotel so I could get my bearings. Believe it or not, she circled the WRONG location on the map of where the Holiday Inn was located. I asked another employee outside and he confirmed it was the correct information. Still not believing it was correct, we got a third employee to help and they showed us the correct information. Scary! Once we got back, the new shift employees were not any better. The hotel in general had a dirty feel and the next morning there was NO hot water when we went to shower. Beware…there are other hotels in the same block and area that are nicer and cheaper than this place.

I stayed here in the beginning of Feb 2005. I thought it was a good value.

I had some trepidation after reading some of the reviews here, but once we got there the hotel was fine.

The location is fine, we walked to everything; it's between the Hotel Valencia Riverwalk and La Mansion del Rio, both of which receive rave reviews on this site regarding their location. So either all 3 of these hotels are poorly situated or not.

Even though we arrived at 11:00 in the morning on a Thursday, we were able to check into our room right away. The room was slightly dated, in particular the bathroom, but overall it was clean and relatively quiet.

The bathroom had some cosmetic rough edges, for instance the cap for the drain stopper was missing, but it was clean, the shower worked fine, the hairdryer worked fine and all necessary amenities were provided (tissue, soap, glasses, etc). However, the bathroom light was ghastly (indirect florescent) and I had to put my makeup on by the balcony so I could see it in natural light.

Overall, a good value for the money and well situated. I didn't have any cleanliness complaints and I received satisfactory service.

Curly hairs in my ice bucket

Three words can sum up this hotel: Loud, Smelly, Hairy. Please don't stay here if you can help it.

This hotel was on the bad end of the Riverwalk. The lobby was nice, but the rooms were musty and loud. The exit hallway to get to the Riverwalk smelled like chlorine and mold. There was no view of the riverwalk from my room, only rooftops of other buildings. The entire bathroom was pretty gross, with small hairs everywhere. The tub looked like it had not been cleaned throughly, as it had a yellow ring all around the tub and little hairs near the drain. I even found curly hairs in my icebucket!! When I called the front desk to get another icebucket, I was told that someone would be right up with a new one. Needless to say, I waited 45 minutes and no one from the front desk had even budged. The bathroom did not have any tissue available, and the slot that normally would be filled with tissues was instead crammed with trash and old food wrappers. When I pulled back my comforter, I saw a massive yellow stain on the underside of the material.

for the price that was paid it was an excellent deal. It is within walking distance to just about everything. The staff was friendly. The only thing that I would suggest is to eat breakfast elsewhere. For the food they have it is overpriced, and limited selection. The only downside I have, and this isnt the only city that does this, is you have to pay for parking, and it was $7.01 per day... not $7, i could never figure why they charge that extra penny

We stayed here because we had free nights coming and the picture of the hotel on the website looked terrific. I have no idea why that picture is on the website - it doesn't look like what we experienced. Our "view" was of an abandonded building with ugly rooftop, we were very disappointed to say the least. Had to go out on the old, icky balcony to look way down to see the "river." The patio doors were old and dirty. The carpet was filthy. The lights in the bathroom flickered and were very dim. No fan in there to get rid of humidity. Found hair on the soap dish. It just felt very gross & dirty. Totally needs renovating. The elevator system for the parking garage and the rooms are different. So you have to go between two elevator systems. Could have cared less about eating there, we went to Texas Land & Cattle for lunch at the Drury Inn and that was really good. I would never, ever stay at that trashy hotel again. Pool was very small. Fitness center has bottled water for free if you want some and some machines. Only thing was the desk clerks were friendly. Go anywhere but there!

This room looked very dingy at first impression. The first thing I did when we got into the room was to call other hotels to see what else we could find. Unable to secure anything else for our entire stay, we ended up remaining there. The riverwalk location was good. That must be the attraction to this hotel. I dreaded returning there each night. There was a big clump of hair (someone elses) under the bed, my childrens feet were filthy from walking on the carpeting. We had to wear shoes at all times when walking in this room. The plug in the bathtub needed to be replaced-it looked really gross. My kids who normally take baths had to take showers. The lighting in the room was very poor. It was hard to read at night without hovering around the one working lamp. The floor lamp in the room had no bulb. The pool area is very small and is in need of updating and maintainence. The pool deck was extremely slippery-an accident just waiting to happen. The pool is 4 ft deep, fine for older kids but tough for younger ones who cannot swim.

Top Local Tips for San Antonio

Have a map!! Study the map BEFORE you get there and know which lane you need to be in if you are going to have to turn! The traffic is horrid if you don't know your way around. Lots of construction going on in San Antonio so lots of streets and lanes are closed!!

Location is a PLUS! Without realizing how close everything was, we drove to the Rivercenter Mall... pretty much everything is within walking distance being on the Riverwalk! You can park your car in the hotel's garage and use the Riverwalk to access all you need! Food, shopping, the Alamo, and more!

Close to all riverwalk attractions Great location!!! My son was graduating from Lackland AFB and it was great for him to rest and for us to visit with him.
