Great way to start the New Year

from mortravel
We stayed after the Alamobowl and for New Years Eve and this hotel is a gem. A half block to the Riverwalk, very clean and quiet. If you don't need the pools & spas, this is the place for you. Rooms are not all that small-ours had a king bed, two nightstands, tv amoire, a desk and two chairs & still had extra room. Turndown service is nice & the hot drinks in the lobby 24 hours a day is great after a day (or night) of exploring. You can explore on foot, no need for a rental car as this hotel is close to everything. And a front row seat on the balcony for the famous San Antonio New Years Eve celebration. Staff was very friendly and helpful. There's nothing not to like about the O'Brien.

great weekend stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed here for the weekend in July 04. I was attracted by the price and the different feel of a boutique Hotel. It was indeed a great room, the bed was very comfortable & oversized. I loved the robes provided and the waffles in the morning were yummy! (texas shape was cute).

It is on the other side of the riverwalk, but all is within walking distance, we thought it was more romantic and quite than the hotels right on the river, great view from balcony.

Incredible bargain near the Riverwalk!

If you love visiting San Antonio and want to stay at a wonderful place within walking distance of everything at a reasonable price, look no further than the O'Brien Historic Hotel. It has only been open since the summer of 2003 (in a restored building) and everything is beautiful. It is small (only 39 rooms) and it doesn't have a large lobby or restaurant. What it does have is a wonderful staff and terrific atmosphere. Although the rooms are small, they are beautifully done with fabulous toiletry items and great (and plentiful) towels. The bathroom has a large adjustable make-up mirror on the wall-never had that in a hotel bath before. Morning breakfast was egg/bacon tacos, waffles, fruit, cereal, pastries, etc. Coffee/tea and hot chocolate were available 24 hours a day. The Riverwalk is 1/2 block away and the trolley stops about 1/2 block from the door. Friends traveling with us had a room at the back of the hotel with a balcony and their room was a bit quieter, although our room at the front facing the street was no problem. It is so nice to find such a gem. We will definitely be back!

Old World Feel

My husband and stayed at the O'Brien on July 12th and it was Wonderful. The room was small but beautifully appointed and the staff was awesome. If you are looking for a place for a quiet weekend or just a break in traveling (like us) it's the perfect place.

a nice little spot

from A TripAdvisor Member
What a nice place. The staff was super friendly, and very accomadating. One employee moved his car so that we could park there for the weekend. Great location - - walked everywhere, and the shuttle stops right next to the front door.

We had a dog, and the staff was super! Will be back.....

Absolutely wonderful!

This is a real gem! Converted and completely rebuilt in 2003 from an old office building and hotel, it has the charm of a historic hotel, yet has all of the modern conveniences of a new hotel. Our first floor room on the back side was large, with a high ceiling, ceiling fan, jacuzzi tub, and was very nicely decorated and furnished. It also was very quiet. Our king size bed was extremely comfortable and far above average. And this was at the standard rate, with no special request. Parking is convenient, either directly across the street or behind the hotel. The location is excellent, just a short block from the Riverwalk. All of the staff was very friendly and helpful with recommendations and comments about restaurants in the area. Our continental breakfast was very nice and included fresh pastries, fruit and cereal, and a waffle iron to make fresh hot waffles. This was set up in the lobby, and while there is no breakfast room, trays were provided to take these back to our room. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and very highly recommend this hotel for anyone looking for a small quiet hotel within easy walking distance of the Riverwalk area. It reminded us very much of typical small up-scale hotels we've stayed at throughout Europe.

brien was good, it could have been great...

When we called two weeks ahead to make our reservation, we had read all the reviews on Trip Advisor, so we wanted to rest assured we would have a large and quiet room and were told our request would be honored with a third-floor room on the backside of the hotel, the most quiet and largest room available. Two days before our arrival in San Antonio, I called to verify our reservation and was told that no specific room was reserved for us. When I stated the aforementioned agreement, I was told that it was incorrect and "somebody screwed up telling you that"and that all rooms were first come, first serve. When we arrived at the hotel, I ask again that our request be honored and was told that the best they could do was a room on the 2nd floor-even though there were 3rd floor rooms available-When I ask what it took to get a 3rd floor room, the employee said, "I don't know" and when I asked to speak to the manager I was told "they aren't here".
The room was nice, but very small and with the low ceiling, a little claustrophobic.Although parking is listed as $8.00 a night, it is actually $10. We were only given bottled water one day of our stay, and didn't receive the promised daily newspaper at all.
These were minor details , but what made them major problems was lack of management. Upon checkout, we were given a questionaire to fill out and return to the manager regarding our stay. Even after taking the time to fill it out, listing everything I have written here, and mailing it to the hotel, I have yet to receive any response from the manager, or any member of the staff of Clarion, who owns this hotel!( this was over a month ago!) This indicates to me that my response was a waste of time and energy, and that I my business is not appreciated-
Maybe someone at Clarion will see this, and (hopefully) these management problems will be resolved- its a shame that a very nice concept such as the O'Brien could fail due to the people it employs...

Price is Right

Visited San Antonio on business and since money is tight, stayed at the O'Brien rather than one of the pricey Riverwalk hotels. Clean, neat, good service and handy to the Riverwalk and La Villita. Only drawback: the complimentary breakfast needs a couple of tables and chairs so you won't have to take the food back to your room. An adjoining place to eat would be nice. I'll come back when I'm in San Antonio again!

My wife and I stayed here in March for 2 days and had a wonderful time. The hotel is about a block and a half from the Riverwalk and has a parking lot right across the street from the hotel. We arrived a few hours early but they made our room available to us early which we greatly appreciated. The room, while not being enormous, was perfectly adequate for the two of us. The bed was comfortable, the bedding clean and soft and they had extra pillows already in the room. The bathroom while again not enormous included a whirlpool tub which felt great after a day of walking around. The staff could not have been any nicer and assisted us whenever we asked with advice on where to eat and go. The morning breakfast included cook yourself waffles which were good. They had coffee, tea and cocoa available 24 hours a day in lobby as well as a coffee maker in the room.Given the cost of hotels these days it is nice to have stayed in one and actually felt like you got your money's worth. My advice to people looking for a good place to stay in San Antonio would be O'Brien Historic Hotel.By the way it is now part of the Clarion chain so you may see that included in the name.

Brien Hotel

My husband and two year old daughter and I stayed at the O'Brien in the middle of the week. It was terrific! The staff was very pleasant and professional and the ambience is so pretty! It's a building that was built in the early 20th century that has been completely renovated with style and class. I love the warm colors and the furnishings in the rooms and common areas. Our room was on the third floor back side of the building so we had a wonderful balcony. The balcony runs the length of the building so each room has access to it. It's a really pretty balcony with nice chairs and little tile tables. The view is quite nice (La Villita and Hemisfair Tower). The bedding was very nice quality and pretty. The mattress was excellent as well and there was turndown service with the chocoates on our pillow. The location is absolutely great as it sits right between the riverwalk and Southtown arts and King William districts. La Villita is also a skip away. One can literally walk anywhere in the lovely downtown of San Antonio. The O'Brien is quite charming and we will stay there again. Highly recommended.

Top Local Tips for San Antonio

walking, dining, attractions everything is within walking distance so wear some comfortable shoes. Make dinner reservations early, our wait time was 2 hours at rainforest cafe. The Ripleys Believe It or Not and the Wax Museum is a waste of time and alot of money, DONT DO IT.

Not to be missed spa If you are into spas, I highly recommend the Watermark Spa at the Watermark hotel. It is luxurious and a wonderful indulgence. A little pricey, but well worth it. You do not have to be a guest at the hotel to use it. I recommend the deep tissue massage, though next time I will save my money to do one of the spa packages. First class all the way!

taco haven If you have a chance and go outside downtown maybe to the historic King william section ,near there is Taco Haven, real mexican food and not just tacos. Bumped into it at lunch and wish we had gone back
