Historical Traveller Reviews of Best Western Sunset Suites Riverwalk Hotel
Very pleased with our stay
We spent 4 nights and were very pleased with the value for the cost. The breakfast was great. The evening drinks and light snacks were a nice touch. Several people commented about the train noise. We heard the trains that pass a little over a block away but they did not bother us. If you are a light sleeper and hear all of the noises then this may not be the place for you. One reviewer reported seeing a homeless person under the bridge. We did see that also but never ever felt in danger in any way. To get from the hotel to the river walk one must walk under an interstate bridge. It is very well lighted at night.
Caution: Noisy Train Station nearby. Sleepless night
I shortened my 5-day stay in this hotel to only one night after having one sleepless night .. The train station (Sunsite station) is nearby and trains horn frequently in the night...
I changed to another hotel named Menger hotel very near to Riverwalk center. It's much much quiet.
In general, the train noises seem not avoidable in the downtown area but the B.W. Sunset suite hotel is just too close to the source of noises.
Other than the noise, this hotel is good - very close to Riverwalk center, clean room, free flow of beer/wine from 5-6pm.
Great hotel, friendly staff, LOUD trains!
My wife and I stayed here in October'06 for two nights for a weekend getaway. Before staying here we did our research and read all the reviews. This hotel sounded right for us and we loved it ! Beautiful hotel, but not in elaborate way, just tastefully furnished. Very clean, LARGE rooms that were very nicely decorated and comfortable. Very friendly staff. Trolley car stop is right outside on front sidewalk. You can get a pass @ hotel for 2.00 for all day. More than a continental breakfast, with a small 2.95 charge. when reading reviews, there were varying opinions about the train noise, well, I can offer my opinion on that now, they are LOUD. First night I heard two all night ,but the second night I heard no less than 8 trains from the NEARBY railway. They DO love laying on that horn, seemed like a mile. This is such a shame ,because we loved the hotel and would stay there again except for that.Hope this helps.
not a block away but nice
The Best Western is nice, clean and all the staff was very friendly. Fortunately we enjoy walking because it seems a lot more than 1 1/2 blocks from The Riverwalk. I would say it was more like 4-5 city blocks. If money is not an object, instead of spending $88 for a very nice place 4-5 blocks away from the Riverwalk, I would choose a place like the Drury Hotel for $139. We walked around the river area a couple times a day and it just would have been a little more convenient. (You can get a shuttle into town for 80 cents each way.) For anyone wanting to watch there money, Best Western was very nice.
I haven't stayed at a Best Western in ages, but this little hotel surprised me so much that I would return again and again. First of all, after searching all other hotels in the downtown area, this one was by far the best value. It's within walking distance of the River Walk, free parking, and the best breakfast value in the city! Our room was quite spacious, very clean, and the best shower in any hotel I have ever stayed, no kidding. Did I say clean? I meant spotless. We had a room on the ground floor. Had some noisy neighbors above that were up late at night, but that's typical in any hotel, and if you travel as often as we do. I would recommend this hotel very highly. Thank you Best Western Sunset Suites for a delightful stay!
Alot of hotel at an affordable price!
My family and i just returned from spending several days at this hotel. I booked this hotel because there was a convention in town and there were few rooms available. I read the reviews and had mixed feelings about it. When i arrived the manager said that she needed to talk to us about our reservation and advised that a mistake had been made and that there were no rooms with two beds available. This would have been better to know before i arrived, but i don't think another hotel would have handled it differentely. The manager advised that there was a sleeper sofa and that they had also went to get a rollaway bed just for our use since they do not use them. The manger was very nice and advised that if this would be sufficient for our needs that she would also discount our room for the time we stayed. The staff was very polite and helpful. The room was spacious and very nice. Anytime we needed extra towels or blankets, they arrived in less than five minutes. The hotel also offers breakfast for approx. 3 dollars each and is a buffet which is quite affordable and very handy with several children. Trolley passes are also available at the hotel for a discounted price. I read the reviews that mentioned a train whistle, not once did i hear a train or it's whistle and i was on the train station side. My opinion on this hotel is that it is a great value and with it's location being a block and a half walk from the river center and the river walk, i would stay here any time!

What a nice hotel. It was an old building in the downtown area, that had been gutted and redone into a fantastic hotel. The furniture was new, solid wood, mission style. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and good quality bedding. This was a "10" for a Best Western. It was a couple blocks from the riverwalk and the trolly stop was just outside the door. We will stay here again and recommend this hotel to friends.
Giant Rooms without a Giant Price Tag
I enjoyed my 5 night stay here during a buisiness trip. My large, quiet room had sturdy & attractive mission style furniture with a spacious sitting area. Definitely not your standard motel-chain feel. The location is conveneint to everything - the Riverwalk & Convention Center are a safe 5-10 minute walk away. If you need to stay near the Alamodome, this hotel is in a prime spot. The historic Sunset Station area that surrounds the hotel has been nicely spruced up with building facade improvements and great restaurants (i.e. Ruth Chris, Aldaco's) , but it can tend to be quiet compared to the Riverwalk. If you are looking to stay right in the middle of San Antonio's downtown core or on the Riverwalk, this hotel just a tiny bit out of the way. The distance didn't bother me one bit, I enjoyed the walk. With regard to train noise - I heard the train tooting in the distance once in a while, but it was not loud and it didn't bother me one bit (I stayed on the first floor facing East Commerce Street). Overall a surprisingly enjoyable hotel experience. Also, if you are looking for a pleasant and off-the-beaten-path San Antonio experience, take a walk along the river from downtown to the King William Historic District.

We had a reservation for six nights at this hotel based upon several positive reviews we read on this website. We had one horrible night there before we checked out and found another hotel. Several people had mentioned the railroad tracks in their reviews, but they suggested it was more quiet on the parking lot side. WRONG! The train went by EVERY HOUR until 4:00am. It was a horrific experience. By about 2:00 it was hard to let yourself go back to sleep knowing the unbelievable LOUD train whistle would rattle you awake within an hour. The train blows it's whistle constantly for a good solid minute while it is going literally right past the hotel. I URGE you to think twice about staying here if sleep is important to you.
It's very unfortunate because the hotel itself and the rooms were quite lovely. They seemed to be understaffed the night we were there and when we needed some extra towels we had to go down to the lobby and get them ourselves. The help at the front desk was also on the rude side.
We ended up going about 15 minutes out of town to the Omni Hotel. It was not that much more expensive and was a completely wonderful experience! Anyone visiting San Antonio would be well advised to stay away from any hotel near the railroad tracks that run quite near the river and go inland instead.
The hotel was an awful experience and such a bad start to our vacation.
GREAT place to stay!
Stayed here for a convention. Everyone on the hotel staff bent over backwards to ensure that our stay was fabulous! The breakfast and happy hours are wonderful money saving perks. The trolley stops right in front of the hotel which makes traveling around town very easy! Joe, the manager, was outstanding! Will definitely stay there again. :-)

The Riverwalk - completely commercial
We were under the impression that The Riverwalk would have a little more "culture" to it, but this couldn't be further from the truth. It's full of overpriced, poorly staffed, chain restaurants. If you really want an enjoyable meal away from the touristy Riverwalk be sure to visit La Villita.
City tours not necessary.
We considered taking an organized city tour. Due to lack of time, we explored the city on our own whenever our schedule permitted. Glad we did that, since we would have been disappointed to pay that much money to see that little. The trolleys are very convenient. Most attractions are within short walking distances of Riverwalk, or the trolley stops. There is really no need for a tour guide to take you anywhere. We did take the river boat tour, and found it mildly amusing and somewhat informative.
Look into using the city's trolleys rather than walking around. We were approached by two different panhandlers as we walked from our hotel.
