Swanky Joint

from rcase
This place is pretty nice. Great decor, plenty of garage parking ($$$), polite employees, etc. This hotel is just a few feet from the drunk infested 6th street. Lots of places to go, but not a place for the family. Kids should not be exposed to some things. The hotel itself was beautiful and very comfortable! Would stay here again if visiting Austin!

Hilton, not so hot

from trfoster
My boyfriend and I stayed one night at the Hilton. Beautiful room, clean. Our main reason was to lay out by the pool have a great dinner and cruise 6th St. The pool was, first of all way to small to accommodate everyone that was there. People were practically jumping over our heads to dive in. Another thing, we were drinking just like everyone else. But, you need to stop serving people when they can not walk to the bar and have a full staff cleaning up after everyone. A floating cigar sent everyone into a tizzy ( there were children in the pool) As if that wasn't enough, you can bring your own cooler. Great for keeping those people there A>K>A Frat boys, drunk. Really drunk. We are pretty tolerant but I would like to party with cool adults not slobbering college age kids. Been there, done that. Overall, won't go back. Unless you like swimming in tequila and beer. Then you are the Hilton's #1 guest.

Not Bad

I was in austing for SXSW and lived at the Hilton for a week. Pretty nice place seems really new. I would come back in a heartbeat

Sleep Here; Eat, Drink Elsewhere

from AWTSc
I stayed in a King room that was of average size. The room was clean with very tasteful Southwest decor. The large vanity in the bath had a whole shelf for linens and real drawers for storage. As another reviewer stated, there are no vending machines - you are stuck with the outrageously priced items in the mini-bar. For this reason I pack a water purifier so that I didn't have to pay the Hilton $3.75 for a *half-liter* bottle of plain, not sparkling, water.

The sushi bar at Finn & Porter downstairs is OK, but much too pricey. The food at the Liberty Tavern (I had lunch and dinner there) was overcooked, greasy and over-priced (See a pattern?)

Do yourself a favor and walk the short two blocks to Sixth St. where the dining and drinking opportunities are plentiful, good and - are you ready? - CHEAP.

Great Facility

Very nice hotel!

This is one of the nicer Hilton Hotels in the country. Great location for downtown Austin.

Good value

Slightly boring room but EXCELLENT location. Great value too. Room is nice and clean. And the hotel is very close to 6th Street without any exposure to the noise. Perfect place for the cost conscious leisure traveler.

not for us..

from pittysmom
we went to Austin on a free trip, and we did not choose this hotel, it was booked for us. Fortunately we didn't have to pay for it, it was not our type of hotel. It's very nice, very big and spacious, although I would not go as far as elegant. Room was a regular double room on the 12th floor. Nice Texas decor, had a nice view of the city skyline, a large picture window. However, I prefer a balcony or at least a window that opens.
This was a smoking room, which we requested, but I have to say, this room reeked so bad of stale smoke, it was disgusting, and I am a smoker.
It was very gross and overpowering, and the AC did nothing for the air quality.
Nice spacious vanity in bathroom, full size hairdryer was a nice touch, although I usually bring my own cause I have alot of hair to dry! I
Lots of options on the pay per view, all are pricey.
Everything in this hotel is pricey, remember it's a business hotel, not a resort hotel.
which brings me to my number one pet peeve of this hotel, there are no vending machines!!
Now this ticked me off, if I want a coke, I have no choice but to take it from the mini bar in the room at a cost of $2.00 plus the 17% service fee.
If I want a Snickers bar, how convenient it's right there, but it's $2.75 plus 17%.
Now...this is probably acceptable if you're a business traveler with an expense account, but for a normal person like me on a pleasure trip it ticks me off. Not that I can't afford it, it merely ticks me off. I guess I'm just not a Hilton kind of person. I've stayed in Hiltons before this, and they all had vending machines. what's up with this one?

Liberty Tavern Cafe/Restaurant downstairs was good for breakfast, they have a regular menu or an adequate breakfast buffet including your drink for $11.99. Food was pretty good.

In general, a nice hotel, but not our cup of tea.
I'd rather stay somewhere with more perks, and that's not Hilton's thing.

Excellent Hilton facility...just as expected

from Rebekajean
We visited this Hilton at the end of August, 2004. Because we are HHonors members, we expected this one to be friendly, with attentive staff, beautifully decorated lobby, comfortable beds and spacious tasteful rooms. We were not disappointed.

Our trip was for pleasure but we brought along the laptop to do a little work and the rooms are well appointed with a work desk and wired. We were greeted most graciously, check in was a breeze, our room was on the 25th floor, which is one of the executive floors, and we parked just outside the door on the street for free all weekend. One block over is the 6th street live music district, wonderful eateries are within walking distance (a wonderful little French cafe is just cattycorner of the hotel) and the weather was so nice that we walked almost everywhere feeling completely safe. The executive floor had a wonderful free breakfast spread in the a.m. and a nice early evening snack (wine and beer is not free) in the early evening.

Although our room overlooked the construction, we were up early so we could get-on-with-the-day, so we weren't really bothered by the light construction noise. All in all it was a very restful, relaxing visit and we do plan to return.

A great place to stay in Austin.

The Hilton is downtown Austin is only 7 months old, and is a great place to stay. It is in a great location, right downtown, one block from the clubs of 6th Street, and there is a wonderful French restaurant, Chez Nous, just across the side street. The conscientious staff takes their job very seriously and they run the hotel like a big city hotel serving business travelers. Our room was quite nice with a comfortable leather chair near the window and a desk with a dataport. The bathroom was small but nicely appointed. I think they need more cleaning staff, because the cleaning people on our floor seemed to always be working their rear ends off, but sometimes it was later in the day before they got to our room. The outdoor pool is lovely and seems not to get heated up by the blazing Texas sun, as we've experienced at some other Texas locations. The health club is very nice, but they do charge extra to use it. The restaurant that is open for breakfast has a buffet that is OK. The fruit was wonderful, but the eggs tasted like powdered eggs and weren't very hot, and the coffee was only so/so. The pastries were very good though. They did not offer anything made to order, like waffles or omlettes, on the buffet, but are available on the menu. Parking is available in the garage below and there seem to be plenty of meter spots, which are free on weekdays after 5:30 and all day on weekends. This hotel is a great place for a conference (which is why we were here) and a great place to stay.

Top Local Tips for Austin

Shop till you drop! Fantastic outlets at San Marcos, a short drive away. Seriously--my fiancee is an absolute outlet fiend, and she says it's equalled only by one near NYC, Woodbury Commons. In Austin, eat at Threadgill's on South Congress. Great happy hour at Manuel's, and the bellhop at the Hilton will give you a coupon for a free appetizer if you ask him where to eat Mexican food (and if he says Manuel's, which he did). Take time to see the Texas Capitol, which is just gorgeous and ornate and makes you feel proud to be a Texan--or wish you were one.

early spring with family Great museums and cultural attractions. UT is very interesting. Note that 6th street is very much adults-only and Austin is a big city environment.

Moonshine Restaurant The Moonshine Restaurant is right around the corner from the Hilton. It was fantastic. Great food, great service, good prices. Check it out!
