Top Local Tips for Nashville

Go prepared: water, food, phone, maps and directions from local residents Do not believe you are anyone's cousin (no offense meant, but I was told that very thing every day and expected to respond with delight. I had to learn a quick 'that's very kind' sort of response). Get driving tips from local residents as Mapquest/Google/others don't show the construction difficulties with the immense interchanges and random detours. Write those driving tips down and follow them to the letter or you'll be lost in Somewhere/Nowhere Tennessee in the middle of the night when there hasn't been any traffic for over 45 minutes. And it's very, very dark outside (nice to see the stars though! ). I highly recommend a cell phone and t-mobile or verizon as a carrier even if it's a prepaid plan; unfortunately most other carriers seem to have a high dropped call rate in the rolling, (beautiful) hilly areas. You're good inside the city limits (mostly) with any carrier, but 10-15 minutes or longer away from Nashville proper you'd better have a great service provider. I was lucky...
