Historical Traveller Reviews of Holiday Inn Select Downtown Hotel

Good Deal for the Price

from AA-Platinum
I stayed here for a conference that I was attending at the Peabody Hotel (across the street). Given the feedback from fellow conference attendees, I got a better hotel at a much better price. My room was clean and relatively spacious. The bathroom was very small, but the shower rod was curved, which made it feel bigger than it was.

On the down side, the windows were sealed, which meant that I had to rely on A/C at all times. In addition, the Hotel is half a block from Autozone Field (Home of the AAA Memphis Redbirds). After the game they have fireworks an concert, which can be very busy. The room had a very nice chair and ottoman, but since the TV did not move, it was hard to see from anywhere other than the bed.

As with many hotels, they tell you that your USA Today is included in your room rate. What they do not tell you is that you can opt out for a savings of $0.75/day. Also, if you are a Priority Club member, a continental breakfast is included (since it is free to join, there is no reason not to join). They are supposed ot inform you of this at check-in, but they seem to be negligent in many cases.

Overall, though, this is a good, centrally located hotel and I would stay here again

Good Location, Bad Food

from Platna
I stayed at this hotel for "Memphis in May." The rooms themselves are clean, although the shower was not attached to the wall. When I pulled at the cord it was apparent there was a huge hole in the wall. But it was not that big of a deal. Breakfast is not included and was expensive by Memphis standards ($10). You can have a much better breakfast at any place close by for the same price, I recommend Elliot's or The Blue Plate. In general I really did not like the food at this hotel, it just wasn't up to par.

The hotel is right across the street from the Peabody and both bars close at 11pm. But Huey's is right next to it and it's open until about 4am. It's about 2 blocks away from Beale Street. This is not far, but in Memphis the drug addicts or drunks come right up to you if they see you are out of town and ask for money. If you are going to be walking back from Beale after 12am, just pay attention that no one follows you. Besides that, the city is completely walkable (down to the waterfront, the Memphis Belle, etc) or you can take the trolley.

The staff is pretty nice and helpful. There is a computer with an internet connection near the lobby but you cannot rely on it. The internet did not work for a full day while I was there. Also, even if you are a smoker I would not recommend that you pick a smoking floor because unlike other hotels, it stinks. Pick a non-smoking floor and go outside, you'll sleep better. The rooms include a Nintendo GameCube controller, but the games they offer are not the very popular ones (not that it matters if you're coming with kids). They do have an outdoor pool, but the water was ice cold so we could only stay in it for a little while.

All and all, this is an average hotel in a nice location. If you can save a lot of money on ths one versus the Peabody or Hampton Inn (which is right on Beale St) then book it.

Great hotel, close to everything!

Just returned from a long weekend in Memphis. We were very pleased with this hotel, it provides a great room at a reasonable price.

The location of the hotel is great, across the street from the Peabody, and just a short walk to Beale Street.

We chose a cityview room, which I highly recommend. If traffic noise bothers you, I suggest that you request a room on a higher floor due to the traffic on Union. Our room was very clean and well kept. The bathroom was small, definitely very crowded with two adults getting ready at the same time.

Although pricey, the breakfast buffet was reasonably good. There are several hot choices, as well as yogurt, pastries, etc on the cold side. Wait service in the Union Cafe was outstanding.

One suggestion, if you use the parking garage attached to the hotel, take the stairs up to the 4th floor, then use the guest elevator up to your room. The elevator in the parking garage is the freight elevator, so you compete with housekeeping, etc. for its service.

Better than expected

we had wonderful service, clean rooms, REALLY comfortable beds, right beside the rendezvouse, best ribs on the planet i may add, staff was wonderful and courtious, nice facilities, but they only had one working elevator at that time but i am sure the problem was only temporary

A very good experience

We've been on the road for 3 days...making our way from New England to Texas...and this hotel is a very welcome detour. It is comfortable, clean, and the location cannot be beat. Plus, the sushi bar downstairs is really good. Overall, we are very happy campers! The whole experience has been a pleasant breeze...parking, eating,'s right across the street from the best hotel in town (The Peabody) and only a couple of blocks from Beale St. and for the amount of money you save, I think it's really worth it.

my stay at the holiday inn was fun. The only was the bathroom was very small thank goodness it was clean. it is within walking distance of beale st. and across from peabody place shopping. didnt get to go out because too many people they closed beale st. down so just hung out in the lobby talking to other people! have not decided if I'll return to memphis but will give this hotel a tumbs up!

We thought it was Great!

from alliebdive
I don't understand some of the reviews below at all. We have just returned from a 3 night stay here and found it to be an excellent hotel with helpful staff. We stay in a lot of hotels from 5* down and are not easily pleased.

Our room was standard HI - 2 queen beds, spacious enough, cool, clean. Not 5* but completely acceptable and very comfortable. Location would be hard to beat. Right across the street from the Peabody, 2 blocks from Beale Street and 5 minutes from the Rock and Soul Museum. You can't beat this location imo - close enough but also far enough from the noise.

We had the Music City Package which gave us Graceland Tours, Museum entry , breakfasts and free parking, an Elvis clock and a music cd. Good value. I'd booked it in advance - and there were no problems at all.

The breakfast was very good indeed - an excellent buffet with super offerings. The service was very helpful and friendly. The outdoor pool was welcome in the summer heat - it's small, but many hotels don't have one at all so....

Really enjoyed our stay and would definitely come back again and stay here.

Great central location

from Buddie-Paisley
My wife and I and our two sons (21 & 18) stayed for three nights this July. It's located directly across from the Peabody Hotel which seems to be the central focus of downtown Memphis. You can walk to lots of restaurants and the famous Beale Street is just on the other side of the Peabody Mall. Lots of other attractions within walking distance although you have to drive for Graceland, the Lorraine Motel, Stax and the Rev Greens' Tabernacle Church.

Hotel is very well finished. Good pool for a city centre and not heavily used. Quite a bit of business traffic as well as seasoned travellers. When hotel is busy parking, that costs $10 a day, can very very challenging! Reception staff not as warm as other hotels in the Holiday Inn group. Breakfast is available in the downstairs restaurtant and offers a good buffet selection. I think it's a little expensive but that's just me. Our sons stuck to cereals but didn't really find what was on offer to their liking.

If you want a centrally located hotel where you can pop across to see the Peabody Ducks this is it.

Worth the Money

from sesm
We stayed at the Holiday Inn recently and were pleased with the quality and value of the hotel. I need to preface my comments by saying that this is a Holiday Inn. With that in mind you will know my prospective. The hotel is right across the street from the Peabody and in front of Rondevuez Ribs. Its an easy walk to Beale Street and offers something that I think is wonderful for a hotel at this location, PARKING. Not just parking but covered and secure parking. Its an additional $10.00/ day on your bill but well worth it.

The rooms are clean and appear updated, the resturaunt is OK and the halls are dingy. For the money, I would stay there again.

First Time In Memphis

from hq014
My Wife & I planned our own holiday visiting Nashville, Memphis, Clarksdale, Natchez & New Orleans. Using TripAdvisor as a review guide we opted for the Holiday Inn in Memphis. Having travelled from Nashville for 4 hours we arrived at the Holiday Inn. No welcoming committee here. Staff were a bit off hand & appeared very miserable. The room was quite large in comparison with what we get in Europe & the location was excellent for Beale Street etc. We never tried the restaurants because the staff were so unwelcoming. We stayed for 3 nights & I visited the bar for 1 drink on our first night but was put off because I was the only person in the bar & the barmaid stayed on her mobil phone for the duration of my visit.
Again it's in an ideal location for downtown Memphis. We wouldn't stay there again...

Top Local Tips for Memphis

Beale Street Don't miss the free bands playing in the park on Beale Steet. You can buy beer anywhere on the street and sit in the park and listen to the band. They usually play until 10PM. This is also great for families who want to experience Beale St.

Civil Rights Museum Free on Monday 3.00pm

Graceland If you have a car, drive to gracelands as opposed to an organised tour from the hotel. It cuts down your wait time. Tour buses you to a depot transfers you to graceland and then you join everyone else!
