Excellent Hotel

Excellent hotel: Rooms well decorated and very comfortable. Hotel is clean, staff polite and well trained. Room service was good.

Wireless internet access was good -- would stay here again and would definately recommend.

This Hotel Has Many Problems -- Avoid It

from SoftwareSam
There are a number of problems, many basic, with this hotel. I would strongly avoid staying here. First of all, the check-in clerk was not willing to honor my confirmed reservation for a King room/non-smoking. So I insisted on speaking to a supervisor, who promptly left the stand, and spent 10 minutes on another phone call before speaking to me again. She finally found me a room that matched my confirmation. It then took me 15 minutes to get to the 27th floor (see other comments about the elevators). When I arrived to my room, imagine my surprise upon opening the door AND FINDING OTHER GUESTS ALREADY IN THE ROOM! And imagine the violation of privacy that these guests felt in having the hotel provide access to their room to another guest. After another 20 minutes of going back downstairs and getting another room and riding back up, I finally had a room.

Tried to order room service. Was placed on hold for four minutes. Operator picked up the phone and asked me to hold again. I was unable to order room service at that point because I was sick of holding.

My room was not cleaned properly. Dirty coffee mugs were not removed. My coffee service was not replenished. Trash was left on the floor.

Nice place if no conventions taking place

from travelsalot1
My husband and I just returned from a 3-night stay at the Hilton Memphis, Jul. 1-4. We were traveling with our 4-month old infant and booked two rooms on priceline for $50 each a night. This was so we would have a place to let the baby sleep while I worked on things, etc. during the day while my husband was attending a course, locally. Overall, we have a mixed review of this hotel.

I called the hotel three different times prior to arrival reminding them we needed connecting rooms because of the baby. The third time I called was an hour before we checked in as we were en route to the hotel. They told me we had been assigned connecting rooms.

We arrived at the hotel late at night, exhausted, to find not only did they not have connecting rooms for us, but there was a huge convention taking place, the African Christian Fellowship. This group was huge and although nice people, basically took over the entire hotel, with many groups of unsupervised children using the elevators as entertainment.

After getting up to the 24th floor to set up the baby bed while my husband circled the parking lot with our sleeping baby, neither of the electronic keys worked. Fortunately, Lawrence, the bellman, was helping another couple with their luggage and agreed to help me. He went back down to the lobby to get the keys reprogrammed. All the way back up and what do you know? Still didn't work. He went back down again for me and back up again and this time they worked (45 minutes after first arriving to check in, now nearing midnight). We spent the first night in one room, forfeting our second room until they could work something out the next day. After repeated phone calls and visits to the front desk personally, they placed us in a "suite," which twice, they assured us they did not have. We finally got into our new room at 5:00 that evening.

The hotel is very tall--28 floors, and every time we wanted to go to and from the ground floor to our room on the 24th floor, there was an extended wait for the elevator (of which none had air conditioning/proper ventilation--neither did the lobbies outside the elevator areas on any floor--very stuffy and hot). The last night we were there, our elevator didn't even have interior lights--extremely unsettling as you get whooshed up in the air in complete darkness amongst total strangers.

Room service was good and prompt. Our toilet did not always flush properly. The rooms were clean and well-decorated in a contemporary style. Our air conditioning never worked properly, lingering at 75 degrees at its coldest, but we felt we would not get proper service for it if we complained, simply because the hotel was so busy. so we just slept without many covers. We did not use the pool as it was completely overrun with families from the convention and always looked crowded. In addition, the pool water looked cloudy.

Once the convention was over, the hotel became a very pleasant place to stay. Elevators were prompt and the front desk staff were less overloaded and more relaxed. Our A/C never worked well, but it was bearable. I would probably stay here again if necessitated, but I would make very sure there were no large conventions taking place.

Perfect Stay

from Mindy2006
Our stay at the Memphis Hilton was perfect. The staff was polite and the room was spotless. We did not hear any outside noise or noise from the hallway. The view was beautiful and the room looked as if it had been updated recently. The elevators moved very quickly and there was no charge for parking. I am looking for another reason to visit Memphis so we can stay here again!

Not impressed with this location May 13-15, 2005

Visited Memphis for the Memphis in May BBQ competition May 13-15

Desk staff on arrival weren't very friendly and passed us amongst themselves until one decied to book us in. Bellman - one of twins - was great.

Got to room to find it occupied. Had to wait for another room.

Open room door and there is a light switch for a light just inside the door but then one has to walk into the room to turn on other lights. After dark the only choice when leaving the room is to leave lights on. Not very sensible. Most of the lamps were unplugged so we had to scramble around on hands and kees looking for power sockets.

After our first night we didn't get room service. The maid did come to the door at 9am and I asked for some shampoo having used the shampoo supplied. Maid never returned.

Outdoor jacuzzi was so dirty the surface looked green. Because of this we didn't use the main pool not knowing when it would have last been serviced.

Corkys BBQ on Poplar Ave was great. Ate there twice.

The wireless Internet, for which you're billed 10 bucks a night, functioned maybe 40% of the time (and in low power at that), everytime you call the front desk, you got put on hold, don't even bother with wakeup calls since they miss them, and checking in/out takes an eternity. Was definitely not impressed and will think twice about booking Hilton hotels. Only reason why I stayed past the first night was to attend my conference.

Unbelievably good value

from MacKiwi
We booked a Monday night in March 2005 via priceline for $37 (with tax it was only $50)!! Priceline only class it a 3-star hotel but it's definitely a 4-star.

The staff were really helpful and gave us an excellent room on the 23rd floor, with floor to ceiling glass and a view back towards the city. The bedroom had very nice furnishings although there is no bar fridge and the basin is adjacent to the door rather than being in the bathroom proper.

The hotel was a little further out from the city than we expected and the roads are slightly confusing in the vicinity. But as it's the tallest building around, you can't really miss it. Ample free parking too.

After arriving at 10:30pm I had to wait 30 minutes just to get up to the check-in counter where it took an additional 15 minutes to check in. The room was fabulous but the coffee pot was broken and never replaced after two complaints. The hotel staff was rude and service was not a priority. The hotel was very clean and modern looking. Having a pool was very important since my 7-year-old was with us. I checked when I booked the stay to make sure the pool was not scheduled for maintenance and was fully functioning... they assured me it was. I called a week out to double check that the pool was up and running. Unfortunately the "heated" pool was so cold that nobody was willing to brave it. The hot tub was warm so it was packed and so much sunscreen was floating on the water that we gave up and went back to the room. Restaurant's breakfast was great and service there is good. Next time I would choose a different hotel located downtown.

I was able to get a reservation through Priceline for $100 and was not disappointed. The service was great. The lobby is very modern with an art-deco feel. We were upgraded to a room on the executive level because the only room available at the time with 2 beds was on that level. Only complaints would be: small bathroom, bedspreads were not so clean. Otherwise, I would say this is a great place to stay!

Nothing Really to Fault: Nice but a Little Bland

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife, daughter and I stayed at the Hitlon a few weeks ago. I had stayed here before when it was an Adams Mark. The hotel has been extensively renovated since then, and like a lot of renovations, some of the good went out with the bad.

The room we had was immaculate and spacious. The bed was particularly nice as was the spacious bathroom. The lobby had a Starbucks, which was most welcome the next morning.

However, the enormous bird cages had been removed from the lobby leaving it rather dull. Also, the location is in a very manicured office park which is clean and safe but lacks the fun and romance of downtown.

I would recomend the Hilton to business traveler, but not someone wanting the feel of Memphis, which is a fun and unique city.
