Historical Traveller Reviews of Elvis Presley's Heartbreak Hotel

The Heartbreak Hotel was clean and the staff was impecable, very pleasant, accommodating and helpful. The morning breakfast was superior in that it was not just donuts and coffee; it was pancakes, fruit, donuts, toast, muffins and much more. Unfortunately, while we were there the elevator broke down and we were on the top floor. This lasted for 2 of the 5 days we were there and this put a damper on our vacation. We would have liked to stay at least another day, but with no elevator, we had to leave. It's a shame they only have one elevator; not even a service elevator.

Down at the End of Lonely Street

My two best friends and I went to Memphis for a "girls' weekend" last summer. We are "younger" Elvis fans (we were all infants when the King died) but we still enjoy the cheesy nostalgia. No, the Heartbreak Hotel is NOT the tribute to Elvis that it should be. The lobby is great (there's a gorgeous black and white picture of Elvis) and our room was nice and clean (with a view of the heartshaped pool), but like another reviewer stated, it could be a Days Inn with an Elvis picture slapped up above the bed. The bar is TINY (seats maybe 4) and the specialty drinks (can't remeber their names, but something like Blue Suede Juice) are EXCELLENT but are served in styrofoam. The pool is small but the heart shape is cute. The staff was VERY nice. However, if Elvis Presley Enterprises would like this to be the "official" Graceland Hotel, they could spruce up the decor, do some landscaping and make it look more like a reflection of Graceland than a Motel 6 that runs Elvis movies all day.

Heartbreak hotel - heartbroken that we stayed there!

We stayed in the Heartbreak hotel on November 29th 2003. Arrived at the airport and called for the hotel shuttle bus which we were told would collect us from the airport only to be told that it had stopped running for the evening and we should make our own arrangements for travel.
This was despite having told them the time of our flight arrival when we booked. When we got to the hotel we were informed that the elevators were out of order and our room was on the 4th floor. We asked for help with our bags up the stairs and was told that we had to manage on our own as no help was available. Once we got to the rooms the bathroom was not clean. There was mildew all the walls and on the ceiling, and thick goo like mildew under the taps, it had obviously not been properly cleaned in a long time.

Complaints was made about the dirty state of the bathroom and a $25 refund was offered but no compensation was offered for the unhelpful attitude of the staff in getting bags up and down four floors.

All in all I wouldn't bother staying at this hotel, there is a Days Inn just down the road which is just as convenient for Gracelands... try there instead!

Backbreak Hotel

Having enjoyed a short visit to Graceland in June, we returned with my mother-in-law, age 70, over Thanksgiving weekend, for a two-night stay in a King bedded suite. The first bad sign was the huge crowd in the lobby, with some people seated but most waiting to check-in. This was the WORST check-in experience of my life - almost 45 minutes before we reached the room. It developed that the elevators were out, and many folks were either demanding their money back or deciding to stay elsewhere. Signs advised that "due to circumstances beyond our control, the elevators are not working, but will be repaired as soon as possible". As soon as possible turned out to be NOT for AT LEAST 48 hours. The elevators were not operational by the time we departed. By the end of the second day, the signs were modified to indicate that NO refunds would be given. Those who refused to check-in on arrival turned out to be better off. We were housed on the fourth floor, and my mother-in-law was not happy about climbing stairs all weeked. The elevators turned out to be just the beginning. The exercise room had 4 or 5 machines and was open on Saturday, but Sunday it was "closed for repair". (All the machines?!) The breakfast was very limited - the bananas were soft and completely black inside. We did not even eat the "complimentary" breakfast on the second morning. When we made our reservations, the room was described as limited to 4 persons, and we indicated that we would be 3 adults. When we arrived, the fold-out couch in the living room was not made up, and we had to find the sheets & 1 pillow and make it up ourselves. There were 3 flimsy plastic glasses & only 2 styrofoam cups for the in-room coffee service. There was ONE washcloth for 3 people. The second night we had cups & washcloths because we complained, but we had no bathmat. There was a long strand of hair when we arrived that remained stuck to the bathroom ceiling all weekend. The flimsy fabric shower curtain wrapped itself around the person showering. All in all, the cleanliness and general upkeep of the property left much to be desired. Do not be deceived by the lavish "suite" photos on the website. Except for the black & white framed photos of Elvis in the rooms, this could be any Amerisuite, Clubhouse or Springhill Suites property. Rooms are adequate size, but have only one small window. King suites overlook the parking lot on both sides of the hotel. Double queen rooms overlook the central "court" with heartshaped swimming pool. The property is within walking distance of the Graceland tourist center, but no one at the hotel mentioned this to us. We drove around and paid the $2 to park before we realized we could have walked. We were so disappointed that I intend to write my compaints to the management, as well as Mobil and AAA guides.

The Heartbreak Hotel Experience

If you are an Elvis fan you must stay at the Heartbreak Hotel and share in the Elvis experience! From the moment you enter the lobby to you get to the room it's a blast from the past! Elvis is everywhere! I really enjoyed my stay there and if I had the chance would go back in a heartbeat! The rooms where nicely decorated and clean. Everything you needed on a trip! Staff was very friendly and accomendating. Only problem was with the shuttle service....one night we waited on Beale St in the pouring rain for over an hour for the shuttle to come. We called the hotel several times and asked if they had any information on where the driver was,we also asked it we could take a taxi back at their expence and their answer was NO. Otherwise, we had a great time! You have to see it to believe it!!! They have kept the King alive!!!

The best hotel in Memphis Tennessee

from A TripAdvisor Member
I thought the Heartbreak Hotel was great. The rooms were really nice and clean. It was a nice hotel for the price too. I have not been there in a while, infact it was about 3 or 4 years ago and I still remember it like it was yesterday. I had a great time at the hotel. They had a channel on the television that showed all Elvis Presley movies. It was enjoyable. They have pictures of Elvis hanging on the wall above every bed in every room. They have a really nice pool to swim in. They have air conditionaning in every room. I just thought it was one of the best Hotels I have ever stayed in.

My Fiance and I stayed at the Heartbreak Hotel, and LOVED IT!!! I am a huge Elvis fan, and I must say that this was THE hotel to stay at if you're going to check out Graceland. THey have a television channel with only ELVIS MOVIES!!!! They play his music in the lobby, and outside of the building as well.

Awesome Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
I loved this hotel. Me and my husband visited Graceland on our honeymoon. The service was great. We got to look at the rooms before we made our decision. The theme rooms are awesome. We stayed in the "Gold & Platinum Suite". It was gorgeous. It was definately well worth the trip. It is a two minute walk to Graceland as well as other gift shops and diners. I would definately recommend this hotel to others if you really want to get the feel of Elvis at Graceland. If I revisit, I will definately be staying here again. Maybe experiencing another one of the gorgeous theme rooms.

Perfect place to stay

Our stay at this hotel was perfect - staff were very helpful and our room was great (we were a little apprehensive, as we had read previous reviews). This is a brilliant base to explore Memphis and two minutes walk from Graceland. Could not wish for more!!

Top Local Tips for Memphis

Securtity memphis appears to be a crime ridden city with many homes having bars on the windows and doors. police told us not to venture far from the Beale Street area at night.

Beale street This street must be one of the most exciting in the world. We went to Beale street six nights out of eight. Music, atmosphere and many wonderful bars and characters in abundance, also must also say we felt very safe on Beale Street and had a fabulous time. Also one of the most special moments in my life was on my 50th Birthday in one of the bars, the Elvis Tribute. This guy knew Elvis for eleven years, he even has a ring that Elvis gave him !!! Awesome, he sounds exactly the same as Elvis and is just the best you are ever likely to see !!!!! Hope my tip is helpful to you. Bye Best Regards Joy xx

Sun studios be sure to take the Sun tour, it was really good and only cost 10 dollars
